As an Irish ‘nationalist’ and someone who worked within the Irish security services, in recent years I’ve worked alongside ex RUC officers and some ‘intelligence’ officers from various regiments and British national entities and I’ve been impressed by their professionalism but saddened by their small mindedness bigotry and outright sectarian attitudes. In the 2020s it has become clear that British government were never and bill never be a part of the solution to the problems in Northern Ireland. Like most Irish people I live in fear of any indications that the gunmen will re-emerge and sincerely hope that long term or even permanent solutions will soon be developed.
