Dalton Trumbo was one of the writers for this film. Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted by the House on Un-American Activities, chaired by Senator Joseph McCarthy. It was a time of the Red Scare, when Hollywood and print media were accused of haboring Communists, who were spreading Communist propaganda through their work. People were called in front of the Committee and were grilled until they implicated others in supposed conspiracies. People lost their careers and possessions as a result of the inquisition. It was one of the darkest times in our history.
It may have been the ending of the movie, but it was only about 2/3rd's of the book at this point. This was a great movie but per usual not anywhere as good as the book.
read the book ''Papillon'' in it Dega is a minor character is mention two three times on two pages in the book Papillon is with three other prisoners during the jail brake . .
Fabulous story, Fabulous Film, my late Dad lent me the book but it was 2 inches thick? The Film is amazing with fabulous performances from all! My Mum is still a massive Steve McQueen fan since the 60's (RIP) but Dustin Hoffman was equally amazing in this film! dx
Incredible film, Both Oscar worthy performances and technical merits abound. To think Schaffer directed Planet of the apes and Trumbo’s writing exceptional , watched this film probably 20 times and it never gets old McQueen in slow mo running down that hillside just watch his face that ain’t no stunt man . In my top ten of all time “ Daga is that you? “
Henri Charriere is one of the most courageous men to ever live. He braved all that to be free and as the narrator said he did live free, and eventually his memoirs brought down that penal colony. But he also had so many more adventures you can't imagine the life he lived once he got to shore. Read his second book Banco where he details his escapades after escaping from Devil's Island.
Sadly, prisons are still a feature of the worldwide prison system in which we live. Papillon might have thought he was free, but he will never escape, none of us will ever escape.
Ok, I don't think anyone can argue this... This movie is a masterpiece, however, I have long believed that the final scene could be improved significantly. Number one, the camera should have just kept moving past him into the ocean. Number two, he shouldn't have had that line... They could have put it in one or two scenes earlier. Three, no narrator... There was no narrator for the entire film, why have one for the last 10 seconds? They could have put text on screen... It would have been more powerful. I love this movie. The scenery and soundtrack stand among the best and McQueen is a freaking legend. Hoffman did great, probably his best role... It doesn't ruin the movie, but the very very ending is a B to what is otherwise an A+ movie... Sorry.

An absolute classic
Papillon is not a true story. All lies.
Apestosos e inoportunos anunzuchos comerciales. Si tu apestoso anunzucho comercial interrumpe el video, no compro tu apestoso producto. Punto!!!
Meraviglioso

I read the book three times. It is fantastic. A truly epic story.

It's amazing how long it's been since I've seen this movie, yet I still remembered Hoffman's little nods as he watched from the clifftop.

The movie is a tale about the power of resilience.

Coneci a história deste filme atravás do meu pai quando criança
Papillon went to my country Venezuela, he owned a cafe restaurant called El Gran Cafe.

I saw it so long ago, and I still remember when Steve McQueen saw that his idea would work, and said "coconuts!"
Sadly, prisons are still a feature of the worldwide prison system in which we live. Papillon might have thought he was free, but he will never escape, none of us will ever escape.
A great book, and good film
For those interested…. Can’t even visit the ruins any more
Why didn't he throw both rafts over? or why didn't (Hoffman) throw the other? saw it 52 years ago, didn't understand then, don't now!
