Students Transform Tense Oakland School Board Meeting Over Budget Cuts into A Circle
On Jan, 23, 2019, #Oakland #RestorativeJustice facilitators Eric Butler and Cece Jordan helped students transform a room filled with hundreds of protesters - who came to fight the Oakland Unified School District board over expected budget cuts - into a peace circle. The event was unprecedented in school board history.
With Cece Jordan facilitating, a couple dozen students created a space in which they could speak candidly and tearfully about the harm they're experiencing at the hands of adults. The students invited the entire school board to sit with them in circle, and despite sporadic jeers and taunts from adults at the gathering, several school board members declared the circle "a safe space", and shared their own personal stories of harm and struggle.
Toward the end of the circle, School Board Director James Harris said that he, and nearly all the other school board members, agreed the traditional school board meeting format is not working and committed to change the way decisions are made in the district.

However, a few years ago, during a board meeting, and under a previous superintendent, two students planned and facilitated a community-building circle with the Board and OUSD RJ staff.*****
The event followed the Oakland Premiere on Jan. 15 at McClymonds High School, of CIRCLES, A Restorative Justice documentary, which follows the struggles of Eric Butler to bring #restorativejustice to Ralph Bunche high school in West Oakland, even as his own teenage son is wrongfully detained and beaten in jail. The discussion at the screening, hosted by school board Vice President Jumoke Hinton Hodge, inspired the 100+ audience to take action.

crazy to think a child's chance at being incarcerated increases when they get expelled from a school
Children return to the system after they have been punished for a variety of reasons. Reasons vary but one common reason is a child who experiences abuse or neglect at home. Someone who is having a horrible experience at home is more likely to do things to get themselves locked up so they can have a break from their family at home.
At the start of this video, it depicts a woman asking a child if "before he thought he was going to make it to twenty one" and he said no. She asked him if he feels like it would be a possibility now and he says yes. That's some pretty real shit. I sure as hell didn't see myself making it past twenty one, until I saw age twenty two. As a child, I always hoped and believed that I would be dead by twenty one.

Thank you for sharing. I've sat in circle and filmed circles many times since that one but it always stands out I think because of the connection that you can feel between the students and with their teacher. The circle is not an "add on" but was built into the culture.

Thank you for showing this amazing formal restorative circle - so many people who genuinely care about one person. This is humanity at stretching toward it's potential. This is the kind of work that heals through awakening, empowering and supporting - one person at a time - because each person counts. Virtues and Values offer the opportunity to develop character, leadership and teams. Each person needs to respect and deserves to be respected. Our actions matter. Our attitudes matter. Here is my catch cry for each an everyone of us. It changes how we treat each other. Use it and you will automatically begin to restore and mend, that which is broken and lost: "For you to claim and enjoy your human rights, I must take responsibility for the way I treat you. For me to claim and enjoy my human rights, You must take responsibility for the way you treat me."
