Little Willie, The Leader Of The Band -- June Winters (Lady In Blue)
A classic children's story about a young would-be musician who thought he did not like to practice. This was originally released on a 78 record, then was re-recorded for this LP in the late 1950s. This version was played occasionally on Captain Kangaroo and other programs.

Great Northern trains crossing the Cascades between 1892 and 1913 had to slow to a crawl as they curved around the rocky promontory of Windy Point. The curve was so sharp that trains might derail if they exceeded five miles per hour. Passengers on one side looked out at a cliff wall. Those on the other looked down a sheer drop-off to the Tye River. After 1913, trains could travel much faster, t...

My dad was an operator at Merritt in the 1950s, and he recalled a teenage Jim George hanging around the depot sometimes. He lived in a house near there. You may have also known signal maintainer Don Walters, and Henry Cox who was section foreman in the Scenic district. They both lived at Scenic. The houses were torn down over forty years ago (needlessly).

I am Most ENVEOUS of the young man. I was a member of the Burlington Northern Explorer Post # 067 In Bellingham, Washinton, from 1971 to 1979. We had LOTS of opprotunities and practical experiances in modern railroad and Steam powered railroad, thanks to the Culp Brothers and there familiy, that operated the steam excursion, at Lake Whatcom. Our Explorer Post went out every summer and " Gandy Danced " for the brothers, to help keep the roadbed proper. As a division of Scouting, "we" had the opprotunity to ride trains, if we had a " Yard Release " signed by us and our parents. It was a child hood dream come true..........B/N hardhat.....B/N Explorer jacket.......switch lantern........weigh-bill holder and train schedual and timetables.....I even had striped bib-overalls, with a pocket watch. Through my High School days, when I would travel from Bellingham, to Pasco,......I would have my "Yard Release " completed and the conductor of the passenger train, would let me occupy any un occupied " Conductors Compartment " that I wished. Of course, it was ALWAYS the last car and compartment. Ohhhh.......how I miss thoes days!

Funny, I had never thought much about those, and had to consult with a few experts just now and also looked it up. It is indeed a horizontal antenna for picking up AM radio stations, which they used to play for passengers prior to the 1960s. By this time it was just a rooftop relic. Glad you enjoyed the little show. Unfortunately, there was no such thing as home HD video in those days. Home movies were 8mm film and expensive.

@@BodoGMeier VHF operation on railroads became established after WWII. The primary frequency for the Great Northern was always 161.1 MHz. In 1970 when the merger happened which resulted in the Burlington Northern, the frequency allocations were retained and remain the same to this day. In GN days, the region through Stevens Pass was known as the Cascade Division. After the first merger of the BN it became known as the Pacific Division. With the BNSF merger the name was changed again to the Scenic Subdivision. So on the other video you refer to, it likely refers to the parts of the subdivision east or west of Scenic. On the dispatcher radio circuit that section is known as "Seattle East." VHF operation in the mountain territory there is done via repeaters.

@@BodoGMeier The sign that says "East Scenic" is at the east switch (where the siding joins the mainline) which is 1000 feet west of the tunnel. Another 700 feet west of the sign is where the depot used to be. They are using a long lens there so it gives a different perspective. A few miles northeast of there is where the worst railway avalanche in U.S. history happened in March 1910 where a passenger train and a mail train were trapped for a week, and in the avalanche 96 people perished. The excessive accumulation of winter snow at higher elevations and the cost of maintaining extensive and expensive snowsheds forced the Great Northern to build the 7.79 mile Cascade Tunnel which was completed in 1929. It was constructed from both ends, and when they met in the center, the line was only off by a few inches. It was an amazing engineering feat even by the standards of today, being completed in slightly over three years.
