Has my home-made not coppercoat worked? Episode 011
Well done, this is another aspect of sailing that really needs to have the BS cut on it.
Looks good. Would you get more coverage if you mixed same ration in bottom paint? I would think paint is less weight than resin but how would it hold up over time? As sombody said after scrapping it might be harder for the barnacle to attach? Keep us updated Thank you
Rolling with an extension to the handle will be easier and faster. Some telescope. You might want more than one.
Cool stuff
isnt your last coat supposed to have an wax additive to harden it if not painting over or some other coating
Thank you for a supreme fault finding video for all Freelander 2's. It happen on really many cars and there's near none answers to the queries that comes up with the answer. I'll redo mine next weekend. Thanks again. Kind regards.
miserable camera work makes me seasick
You just discovered what has been known for years. The barnacle sticks to any surface in the water, they emit a substance like glue to do so. This substance is often left behind when you scrape them off. This scraping and polishing is something more you need to do as a boat owner, i even putchased a hookah rig to allow me to stay down until the job is finished. I don't worry about scraping off the paint, as a fresh surface is harder for the barnacles to adhere to. And last, don't forget your prop. The prop is most important, thete must be nothing whatever on it or you will loose power and speed if you have even one barnacle. After scraping the prop i take 80 grit wet sandpaper to it and polish it up. By the look of your hull you haven't been on it for some time. I usually dove on my hull at least once a week.
full points and gold star good job
So you sanded then mixed epoxy resin and added the copper powder. Then rolled it on. How did this work out over 2 years thank you
So useful Des. Poorer on this planet without you and your sense of humour. Often think of you while sailing myself. RIP.
You needed to add some thinners to make it easier to apply , and once dry and hard a light rub with some wet n dry to open up the copper
Simply measure,if it is off it's so close ,don't worry it will be in the water
Brilliant! Absolutely great result. Thanks for posting. I will copy this secret recipe since I want to be a King as well. ; ) Cheers from NZ.
I have met others who have made DIY copper coat using regular laminating epoxy. The anti-fouling properties were apparently not good. I think there is a reason that Copper coat uses a water-dispersed resin.
Nice work, do you put thinner to the epoxy? I ask me always if this will work also with hartantifouling and copperpowder.
Gonna have to take tea i guess when i work on my alexseal project
I haven't painted a boat before and this video was nothing but confusing.
Took longer to strip and clean, that to remove and replace. Excellent video.... Thanks.
Do you think it is possible that the surface water where you moor is fresher and less salty than the water lower down towards the bottom of your keel? As the coating was applied evenly there should be no difference in its ability to stop barnacle growth yet the barnacles are definitely located deeper.
Does that chaffing cause rear and front from working as we have both not working
Ahh the highs and lows of refit works. It's a bloodsport! I felt your pain, but she looked great in the end.
Nice job and cheers for sharing Des! You mentioned if you apply what you learned in the three coats you could get the remainder as good as the bow section...could you please describe what these key learnings were?
miss you dap
Love this ♥️
Sailing with Des anytime of year would have been fantastic. RIP my friend.
Des we miss you.
😢
RIP Des
Des, I never got the opportunity to meet you in person but you were one of my best friends. I miss you every day, your brilliance was unmatched. I hope you travel well in the next life, and I'll see you there.
Do you believe the copper coat you did is better than what was previously on your bottom.
My diagnostic reader says ALL 4 front sensors are out, which sounds highly unlikely. I removed and reconnected both front and rear connectors from the parking sensor module to see it was bad contact there, but no joy. I guess the front bumper needs to come off next...
Awesome Job Des. I am now convinced that this is what I want in stead of propspeed. Thanks for the video.
RIP. You were an amazing neighbour x
Definitely will be missed my friend. May your travels continue on the other side.
RIP my friend 😪
I like the presentation style very much, especially the comments at the front. The floor looks great.
Thanks John.
Mission creep… a term for everyday use.
Indeed 😂
I liked that line as well, I suffer from that alot, and have to keep reminding myself.
The floor looks good.
Makes a hell of a difference to the overall feel of the inside.
So how's the floor paint holding up? 🎸🎶🎹🎶🥁🎵
Pretty good. Just needs a good scrub atm!!
Result 🏅after an easy scrape with a plastic scraper a light sanding and you are good to go for another year.
That looks like success to me! 10 months and that's it, a few easily(haha not with a gopro) dislodged barnacles! 😎
yeah. it's brilliant. my only concern was a couple of patches of rust on the keel. The anti-foul is working as expected. Maybe I have low expectations.
Shall we just call you Des the copper coat king? Looks good.
Easy now! :)
won't work because it won't ablate (copper will be trapped in the epoxy lattice)
It does work! When immersed sea water attacks the exposed pure copper powder, causing the formation of cuprous oxide. This is a highly effective antifouling agent and puts off growth until the surface degrades further to become cupric hydrochloride. This final copper form is highly unstable, and is washed away by the movement of the yacht, thereby removing any accumulating silt or slime. This automatically reveals a fresh copper rich surface, whereby the process recommences. I had some weed growth but as soon as I started sailing the yacht the weed fell off. Worst case I will have to re-sand and expose some fresh copper.
@@dapman2007 your binder is a 2 part epoxy which is strong and rigid and it does not degrade, trapping the copper and rendering it inert......outhauling is too expensive to justify using an underperforming antifouling which is all you have
@@jean-philippepollonais1104 that would possibly be true if the surface had not been sanded after application. The purpose of the sanding is to expose the copper with the copper exposed I would propose it is no longer inert. I will do a video today to show the state of the hull. The boat has been in the water for 10 months. She did hardly any sailing for the first 8 months. She has been used a lot in the past 2 months. When I left my home port at the beginning of September there was some weed growth. It has been a very good year for growing weed! I will film the hull today and give an honest appraisal of the situation.
czcams.com/video/H8k28cnBxU4/video.html check this out Jean
@@dapman2007 the point is that antifouling is self ablative and requires no sanding and thus you have an underperforming antifouling which is unviable when out hauling costs are considered

Merhabalar bunun içindeki sarı plastik dişli konumunu montaj sırasında nasıl takıyorsunuz.
Why that looks like Apache Junction Red!!
For what its worth, Frog tape was made for Latex paint. It WILL work for what you (or anyone) were doing by first wetting the edge with a sponge dampened with water and letting it dry. Once the water-soluble glue has hardened it will seal your paint edge. Solvents (like your paint) will not activate the glue in the tape.
We know where you hide the good stuff now Des. Beware of the pirates.
Your wee funny bunny mate.im sure enjoyin your messin about with her bottom;) and ill keep followin.
Wow thats great Des ,and did you need to remove former bottom paint i suppose?excuse my newbie questions but ive not done bottom paint before and this seems like a no brainer
