My mother died from pulmonary embolism in 2014, age 67. It was shock because she had no previous symptoms.

I had a “Saddle Pulmonary Embolism” just last month. A ton of clots in both lungs. I was not able to breathe at work in the break room and ended up passing out and falling hard to the ground (ended up hitting my head and needing stitches). Was rushed to the hospital and they immediately put me into surgery for a thrombectomy. I’m thankful to be alive and am starting to eat healthier and exercise. I do not want to take my health for granted anymore. Glad to hear you’re doing better man.

So many people (me too!) with PEs! Mine was a couple of weeks ago. Mine problems started 4 months ago when I broke 5 ribs in a skiing accident. Like you, I first noticed lung/heart problems when I was bike racing (Zwift) and my numbers just weren't good enough. I had slipped from cat C before breaking my ribs down to cat D.

I would yawn quite a lot. I was tired and just really exhausted. I would take naps but I won’t sleep good tonight if I do.

Hearing your experience was familiar and different than my past 4 week DVT and pulmonary thrombosis. Biker here too, and an unusual tightness in the calf muscle and behind the knee had me visit a clinic because it just didn’t feel like a muscle ‘pull.’ Fortunately I was sent over to the hospital a minute away and had blood tests and a CT scan, results and doctor’s consultation within a couple hours (I’m in Japan with national health). They wanted me admitted for a 2-week stay right then. It was hard for me to understand this was serious - even though I have a medical background - I didn’t feel bad except the leg and being ill was just something that was very different for me. Not much the hospital could really do except monitor my condition. So, against the doctor’s advice I checked myself out for home care with my wife. Oral blood thinner and pain medication. I couldn’t walk for a week and even laying down with the leg up was painful. It was a gradual recovery and day-by-day. My 3-week follow-up CT Scan showed the blood clots in the lungs completely cleared. The leg is still tight and with some swelling and pain, but showing improvement enough I’m doing short walks and slow bike rides to get my blood moving. They really thought I could die, and one of the reasons (besides the comfort level, positive environment for recovery, aware how to take care of myself) for being at home was that my wife couldn’t visit me in hospital (coronavirus protocol) and wanted to be with me rather than a ‘phone call.’ I’m in my late 60s, good ‘normal’ blood oxygen levels, bpm at rest in the 40-50 range, BP low, and general good health. We are still not sure why this happened; a couple difficult long 10+ hours car drives I had last month, secondary ‘long’ symptom of Coronavirus I had last year, or something else? Genetics Marker test rules that out. It is a mystery.

Just got diagnosed as well - 36 years old. As someone who was an ex-triathlete and playing football once a week now, this has been a serious blow. My wife got dianosed with stage 4 cancer 6 months ago and we have a 2.5 year old toddler. Football was an outlet for me, and now it seems to be out of the picture. I have questions on how active are we allowed to be eventually? Currently in week 1 of medication (Riravoxaban) and my chests still hurt.

Had this yesterday called an ambulance 4am yesterday morning was back home bu 11 am have exactly the same things going on have P E and an infection somewhere but they gave me prescription of blood thinner and antibiotics but sent home in agony misses wasn't to pleased got a scan next definitely painful experience

Did you have to stay on the blood thinners for life? Or have you stopped taking them, I had a blood clot 2 years ago on my leg, and then in December I had a PE on my lung. Really hoping I don’t have to stay on thinners for life.

I had a PE 2 months ago and still am soar when I yawn. Soar In the same part of the body you are describing. Did you have pain after coming home from hospital and how long did it take to go away. Completely heal?

I just went through the same thing. Was told it was a Baker cyst then ended up with a PE...one week into it. Now what happens?

Firstly thank you for your detailed description of having a DVT and a PE. We are both lucky survivors. Very lucky. Secondly your description of how you were treated by the NHS on your admission to hospital demonstrates the deplorable state the NHS is in. You were lucky to survive the delays in having a scan. Your symptoms should have raised a big red flag for any of the doctors who you met and you should have received a scan within an hour of arriving at that hospital. But the main thing is you survived the terrible delays caused by the NHS in diagnosing your serious condition. In fact it’s a miracle you survived those delays. Of course I am now on anti coagulants for the rest of my life. You are quite right to state that the body can dissolve existing blood clots using its own defence system BUT not always. Your anti coagulants should keep you safe from having more blood clots but your body may not be able to remove all the blood clots on your lungs. If you find after 6 months that you are breathless my advice is that you to a doctor who knows what he’s doing and arrange for another scan on your lungs. If the clots have not dissolved you may be looking at long term problems including heart problems. There are ways of removing the clots on your lungs. The best way is to have a catheter put in your arm or groin. A tube is passed through your veins/arteries to reach the offending clots and clot busting drugs target the clots and dissolve them immediately. The USA now have a procedure whereby the tube enters your lungs and simply hoovers out the blood clots. I’m not trying to worry you because your blood clots may indeed dissolve naturally. Mine haven’t dissolved and they have seriously restricted my life style. I still get very breathless. I am in the process of having another scan on my lungs and heart. If the clots are still on my lungs I will pursue the catheter tube route. I am much older than you and this means you should be fine but if after six months you find you get out of breath my advice is to have another scan. Best of luck. I hope we both come out of this ok. Being so young means you should be fine. But insist on another scan if problems persist. This condition is responsible for many hundreds of thousands of deaths every year and doctors in the U.K. should know better.

Blood Clots are quite common. I'm wondering why the doctor didn't think you had a blood clot. Looks like they want to find something else that is not a blood clot because it's easier. I have had a pulmonary embolism as well as lots of tiny blood clots a few months ago and am now on Apixaban for at least six months, making longer. I'm 74.

I'm 33 and had a fracture in my knee after an accident... This later was diagnosed as DVT followed by PE... Was in the hospital for a week.. one of the worst years in my life
