Our Family would like to thank the public for the numerous kind thoughts, memories and beautiful stories shared with us about Robert. The crimes in his past were decades ago. Those crimes are unrelated to this current tragedy. After serving his time, He had since built a beautiful young family and has a son 6 years in age, who was his world. He built a general contractor business, became heavily active in boat racing and given so much help to the community building ADA ramps at local churches and numerous other efforts. Robert thrived on hard work and prided himself on doing his part in reducing recidivism by hiring and training some of the communities otherwise unemployable. He was a regular community member, a dad, a valued member of our family. In light of May Mental Health Awareness Month, we ask that our loved Kern Community remember that this tragic moment started as a mental breakdown of an otherwise productive member of society. We are confident KCSO and DA will sort details of procedure, process and protocol and our family expects accountability, of course. KCSO sheriff and detectives did permit Robert's immediate family to see him before he passed away and we are forever grateful for that. The treating physicians at KMC demonstrated compassion and competence concurrently and we feel they did the best they could given the situation. The Family requests that his memory be that of the good things he did, rather than associating his current death with crimes decades old. It was a tragedy and it is unecessary to villanize a mental health crisis. As a community, let's love each other through this horrific time.

I worked at a police dept. for 4 years as a clerk typist. I was surprised to find out how much politics is involved. Not only do the officers have to see the worst of the worst on the street, they have to deal with the politics at the office. Some good, some bad and I've seen both. Depends on who you know and if you're liked or not. I've seen some get a slap on the wrist for doing something wrong and others get severely disciplined or fired for doing the same thing. I respect all officers because I know what they go through and it's not fun and if they also have personal problems at home, it's 10X worse. My sincere condolences to this officer for whatever he was going through, his family, and his peers.

I seriously don’t understand why some officers feel the need to tell drivers, suspects everything they’re thinking, doing, observed, while the individual is completely free to respond as they wish. Examples: Driver sitting in car, engine running - officer says he smells weed. Others: Yeah, I gotta check you for warrants; Yeah, I gotta check and see if this car’s stolen. This officer could’ve gotten his head blown off while bending over looking for the VIN on the door, while copying the number from the dash. As we know, the way things are, police are mostly reactive, so any time you can get the element of surprise, you need to use it to deprive them of time and, therefore, the ability to formulate a plan. You never want to raise anxiety levels unnecessarily, like when you tell them you smell weed, etc. and they’re left in the car to stew about it or even if immediately ordered out. You’re allowed to order the driver and passengers to exit a vehicle without having to give a reason why, so do it. And always, always close the driver’s door. Practice like hell being able to get cuffs on in no time flat. How many times have we seen compliant suspects change their mind because the officer fumbled around with cuffs, took too long to get them on, giving the guy time to decide he’s gonna flee and if that takes fighting, shooting, whatever, that’s what he’s gonna do.
