WHERE TO AIM WITH SIDE SPIN
Playing with side in any cue sport can be tricky as it pushes the cue ball off it's natural path. This video shows you how to calculate how much to allow for side spin when aiming at your shots.
It also includes an easy little exercise to track your progress and a great demonstration on why you should play with side.

Very helpful, thank you for making it as simple as it actually is. I mostly avoid using these shots after missing easy shots while trying to use side, but I will definitely be trying this tomorrow. 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. I used to do the same. Let me know how you get on 👍
Great tip !
Thanks my dude
Best explanation ever !
Wow. Thanks very much. I really appreciate that 👍
Between your accent and the speed you are talking couldn't understand a word you said
Sorry. There should be subtitles on the video?
Thats a great and simple explanation mate. awesome job.
Thank you my friend 👍
Great content on yr videos . It's the silly things we forget that make the difference. Thanks for reminding us on the basics .. keep up the good work
Completely agree. Do the basics well and anyone can play to a very high standard 👍
Btw, have to see the new Apollo Rassan table? Looks fantastic and the Ultimate Pool guys will be using it soon. I'm trying to persuade my wife to change ours. Noy having much success yet 😂😂😂😂
It looks unreal doesn't it? Think they're a few grand though. Very top end. Mine was about £1,500 during lock down, think they're up to a couple of grand now
@@PoolTips101 yep. Mine was about £1500 just before Lockdown. I think the AR is about £3.5k. Would love the black one. That's the only selling points as far as my wifes concerned. Not a strong one though😂😂😂😂
Tell me u have money with no skill without doing it
You shouldn't be so quick to judge my friend. Have a look at the multiple videos on my other channel of me actually playing. Here's one to start czcams.com/users/shortsvcdmB10FNU0?feature=shared
Great vid, my friend. Side is never easy but the benefits are worth persevering. Some nice routines in there
Couldn't agree more Michael. Thanks for your continued support 👍
I’ll have to try and get one of my team doing that shot in practice when we next go
It's a nice little one to start with 😊
@@PoolTips101 I’ll have to try and get him to do draw and follow shots as well
I've always liked side spin. I learned draw/ screwbacks first. But then I actually learned side spin before I learned follow/ top spin. Great share my friend 👍🎱👊
Thanks Nick. That's unusual, I think most folks learn it last or just never at all. I love it too though. Love making the cue ball change direction 🤣
Very good mate!
Many thanks my friend. Appreciate that 👍
I’ve been taking billiards more seriously since 2017 and my biggest battle is figuring out which grip to with and I’ll have to say after that watching this video something clicked (credit to you) and I’ve been using your grip since. Cheers sir
That's great to hear and glad it's helped. Thanks for watching and commenting, it's very appreciated 😊
In Vietnam we call "Ép phê" but that word is meaningless, perhaps originating from the English word "effect" but Vietnamese people like to translate it into Vietnamese to make it easier to read 😂😂
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. I've learned something new today 😊
@@PoolTips101 btw, Dr.pool is your chanel too ?
I need to get a better grip on my shooting mechanics. 😁👍. Great video friend.
No worries, thanks for your support bro 👌
Thanks for that ,it works
Good stuff. Glad to hear it 👍
Cheers
You're welcome. Thanks for watching 👍
You're so smart
Haha, not sure about that, but thanks 😊
This is a damn good explanation bro, keep doing this ❤
Thanks my friend. I appreciate the kind comment
This is interesting! I would have thought you'd want running side not check side on the object ball to smooth it going into the pocket. I've been doing this wrong! 😂
Hey bud, you ain't doing it wrong, it was just the way I played it as I kind of stunned the shot. If I played top spin then right spin would be running side 👍
Thanks again for the tip buddy. I remember the guy who taught me how to play once told me that he found he was barely gripping the cue when he was playing his absolute best. Keep sharing bro 👍🎱👊
Yip, would agree with that my friend 👍
Thanks, gonna try this. Would it be the right hand spin on object ball for the other side?
Thanks for watching. Yes it would be the opposite for the other side of the table. Whatever side the cushion is on as you look at the shot you would play the opposite spin on the cue ball. In this example, the cushion was on my left, so I put right spin on the cue ball. Hope that makes sense 👍
@@PoolTips101I tried it today. It definitely helps so thanks. I was hitting it too full ball at first but hopefully will get used to it.
@SultanSaeed_99 That's good to hear my friend. Keep it up 👍🎱
Amen spIn is our friend
It sure is buddy 👍
I will try these for sure, thanks for the explanation.
Good luck, hope it helps 👍
Explained straight to the point!!
Many thanks for watching and commenting my friend 👍
I do not understand the near cushion cut shot at the end of this YT video. Should I use left hand spin on the cue ball instead? I aimed at about 1.5 diamonds from the end pocket on the long rail and the "left-hand spin on the cue ball" worked perfectly for me.
Right spin on the cue ball will transfer left spin onto the object ball. As you can see from the shot I played without the cue ball, left spin on the object ball worked better. I think the US tables are a lot more forgiving on cushion shots than the UK tables, so that is maybe why it still went in. Also, either spin will help it in once it hits the knuckle, it's just right spin on the cue ball should help it more if it hits the cushion. Hope that helps 👍
Very useful info I didn't know before and great demonstration. I did however see a video of Gareth Potts advising to play left hand spin on the cue ball. Don't think he gave an explanation or I probably don't remember. Great video though 👍
Thanks very much. That's very kind. Either spin will help the ball in once it hits the knuckle, but right hand spin also helps if you hit the cushion first 👍
Awesome video.
Thanks very much my friend 🎱👍
Ya good video, I call it side spin here in Canada.
Thanks Jason. Is pool a popular sport in Canada?
@@PoolTips101 I can find tournaments every weekend as I live in a bigger population Center. Our top players are dedicated. I see the same faces at all of them.
Yo, amazing vids! Can you cover... How to adjust aiming for spin. How to adjust aiming for bottom, especially over distance. Honestly best videos I've ever seen
Many thanks Jake. I actually just recorded one on side spin yesterday. I'll edit it and upload it this week 👍
This is all stuff I already know but tbf this is one of the best explanations on CZcams! Keep the vids coming mate your a excellent teacher! I'm baffled you have less than 1k following you! 😒
Thanks Kevin. That's very kind of you to say. It's a new channel, so hopefully as I add more content I'll get more subscribers. If there is anyone you think would like the channel please share it 👍
The is deep! Lovely
Many thanks dude 🙏
An on cushion vid please 👍🎱👍
Hi Alan. Do you mean how to play when the cue ball is on the cushion or the object ball? If it's the object ball then I've just done this video czcams.com/video/U7OwCcd3sfo/video.htmlsi=kDie6PHYlLDBpNog
Hi again, That video is showing off cushion aiming, I was looking for object ball on cushion and how to pot from a distance, which side is best in which situation etc. 👍🎱👍
@Smirnoff44 If you use that video it should help no matter what distance you are. In terms of side, play the side that would push the cue ball into the cushion. So, the shot I played the cushion is on my left, so I play right spin on the cue ball. Play the other side of the table and just reverse it 👍
Is it possible to have POV when you hit the cue ball? That would be really helpful in understanding the spin shots.
Sure thing bud. I'll do it on the next one 👍
We usually call it English or left/right spin here in middle America. Are those balls smaller than standard American billiard balls? They look tiny when you hold them.
Thanks buddy. The object ball is 2 inches and the cue ball is 1 and ⅞. I believe the US balls are 2 and ¼ inches 👍
So you’re from Central America?
@@PoolTips101people in the U.S can’t differentiate between a country and a continent.
@elpacho....9254 Not much better here my friend. I'm in Scotland, but depending who you ask we could be from Scotland, Britain or the UK 🤣
@@PoolTips101 at least you don’t generalize and say you are from Europe, as if only Britain was the only country in Europe.
Hitting without cue ball?
Just to demonstrate what the object ball is doing. I play with the cue ball at the end 👍
Great tips in this one. Potting down the rail is so tough. All guidance welcome 😂
Many thanks for your support Michael. I really appreciate it 👍
Love the short, sharp no waffle format 🎉
Many thanks Jay. I hate watching waffling videos myself, so try to just get to the point in mine 👍
Merci pour tes vidéo elle sont super
Many thanks my friend 👍
Another great video! Any tips on breaking? Thanks
Thanks buddy. Biggest tip I could give would be to have 2 or 3 different breaks that you feel comfortable using. Conditions change all the time which means a break that was working can suddenly stop and so that's the time to mix it up. I tend to use a cut break but if I go 3 breaks in a row without potting I'll then change it
In Canada we call it both side spin and English. I've also seen American pros use both terms. I know two people that call it siding though
Thanks for letting me know Zane 👍
@@PoolTips101 no problem
My friend told me to always aim for the good side and he's right because I usually find myself cutting into the rail when I'm not aiming properly
Good tip buddy 👍
@@PoolTips101 thanks
the ceiling is so low, this guy looks bigger than actual size
Haha. I'm in a shed with a sloped ceiling. It's 8 feet at the door and just over 6 feet at the low end 👍
Such a good explanation sir, thanks
Many thanks my friend 🎱 👍
Thanks for sharing buddy. As far as your question, in the US we usually just say something like put a little left on it or put a little right on it. Or low left, low right etc. Keep up the great work bro 🎱👍👊
Thanks buddy. Good to know my friend 👍
Excellent video mate, thank you. I have to say also, that's an awesome man cave. Loving the Queen and Bowie paintings - Great taste in music!
Thanks Ben. Really appreciate the support. Bowie is my fav 😊
I learned nothing from this, it also could’ve been half as long.
If you already know how to aim then why watch it? Thanks for watching and for the constructive feedback 🤷♂️
@@PoolTips101 you taught nothing, that’s all. You never elaborated past the contact point. I bet you’re not even 600 fargo
@jasonnieuwenhuis7995 So you want me to elaborate but keep it shorter 🤣 At least we're getting close to constructive now. I'm in the UK, we don't use fargo, but that's nice of you to try play down my pool skills. If it's something that bothers you then have a look at my other channel @DrPool147 where there are videos of me playing. Maybe when you see how good I am you'll be more willing to listen to my advice 👍
@@PoolTips101 I like that. Pool skill doesn’t always show in instructional videos. Maybe you’re looking to give lessons to beginner or intermediate. Maybe I watch so many videos it’s just tough to get me inspired. I’m probably just not your demographic. Sorry for being a dick
@jasonnieuwenhuis7995 No worries my friend. I do something to try help and at times the negative comments just get to me. Hopefully I'll create content for all levels, but I'd agree, something like how to aim would be more for beginner level 👍
great vid, just one thing : the sound isnt equal all along the vid, you might want to use compression on the audio
Thanks bud. I'm not sure how to do that but I'll definitely look into it 👍
