Check the laws for Nazi symbols or memorabilia and sale or purchase. It is forbidden in many countries (and certainly in the EU). Be careful and maybe check. There where never Nazi 'branded' cameras that left a factory as far documentation shows. Some people at the time did have jewelers or craftsmen engraving their belongings with Nazi symbols, among some are camera's.

1:13 "...estimation focusing" Don't under-eastimate that method - Rollei 35S's 'estimation focusing' was/is great for "getting a feel" for distances and, combined with setting the aperture, for depth-of-field. I did learn(ed) a lot from it.

I’m tossing up between a7R2 and a7R3 because maybe better AF..? I also shoot old adapted MF lenses but in night shooting sometimes need AF due 60yr old eyesight…

Its a soviet FED-1 as others have pointed out. But I suspect you already knew that, and wanted the clicks/engagement, as a 30 second google search would've told you all you needed to know about these "scameras".

Correct, that´s a soviet camera. You can see this from the little arm (visible from 6:52) which takes the distance set on the lens. In an original Leica the tip of the arm would be round, in an FED or Zorki it would be oval, like here...

I'm like 90% sure this is a FED-1, this was made in Ukraine, probably before the mid 50's. Later on (probably very recently, judging by the lack of patina) somebody rubbed the engravings, painted it black, and put some disgusting Nazi iconography on it later on. Hardly "cool", and nothing "historical" about this, it is a fabrication. They had the decensy of not writing "Leica" on it, but they did write "Leitz" on the lens... anyhow, around 20-40 bucks is probably what it's worth; you see them floating semi-regularly on eBay.

You have a Soviet FED or Zorki modified with Nazi insignia. It is not a historical copy. It does not resemble any camera which ever existed. Why do you think this is cool?

Wait WHAT!!!!??? SONY A7RII GETTING SOME LOVE NOW?!!?? FINALLY!!!!!! I have this camera and damnit i wish they'd give us an update but man my Rii is a workhorse! I use it for video equally to photography in the commercial field and does great wonders! I don't care what NOBODY say... Sony A7Rii is a beast mode. Little slow but beast. I'm looking at the 7Riii right now but my two made me lots of money STILL

People are completely missing the point… film photography is making a come back but is still in danger because the existing cameras are getting old and we are losing the expertise of repairing them, are getting out of spare parts, and already lost the expertise making them. The cameras are expensive because of the R&D required to relearn how to build them using modern facilities and techniques. They are also more modern, have spare parts and come with warranty. To make the film industry grow and to lower the costs of film in the future, you need a market, that involves the major players coming back to this market to get it out of this expensive niche. Considering these points, they are not as expensive as you think they are. These new cameras are IMPORTANT, and if we do not support them, in a few years, we can say byebye to our analog hobby.

I think people here have no idea how much analog cameras used to cost when they were released. These prices are expected for something new, with tech support and warranty. Yes I know you can buy a used Canon AE-1 for a sandwich and 10 bucks, but good luck when they fail (and will eventually). People are just being negative about something amazing and in my opinion it's worth supporting if we want to see more new stuff coming out.

$800 ? No way. Yes, better than Pentax 17 IMHO but the price tag? Still, I would buy used analog cameras and get the same, or even better (no plastic)

All the people who hilariously lost their minds over the Pentax 17's price (I love mine so far, three rolls in...) are predictably going to do the same over the 35AF. I don't expect it to actually cost what they are hoping - I think it will be more expensive. I will buy it either way - brand new, quality manufacturer (MiNT camera) and AF crammed into that itty bitty thing sounds neat-o. Since the 17 was hot seller , I am sure the AF will be even more so - that way all the people who think it is 1974 and/or can't find anything better than do than a hate-circle-jerk for a camera they were never going to buy anyway cause they are too busy bickering over "wHo Is iT fOr???!!??" can whine and moan about it on the interwebs, while us who actually own one will be out having a blast using it. I have been carrying my Pentax 17 everywhere and it is has proven to be well worth $499, I am sure the 35AF will be as well. MiNT who is making the new 35AF makes great instant film cameras (I own a TLR70 and have used it quite a bit, it is a blast and worth the price IMO.) I wonder though, will the person making this videos actually ever buy/use a 35AF - cause they didn't for the 17

Uso spesso una Olympus E-5, l'ultima reflex professionale del sistema 4/3 che ha lasciato il posto al micro 4/3, perché amo vedere attraverso un mirino ottico. Uso anche le mirrorless, soprattutto quando davvero mi servono, comunque amo le vecchie fotocamere digitali. Ultimamente mi diverto anche ad usare la Sony F828 grazie alla possibilità di fare foto infrarosse: basta una semplice calamita per spostare fisicamente il filtro davanti al sensore. Si può fare anche con la Sony F717...

Attualmente uso una vecchia bridge Sony F828 nata alla fine del 2003, perché grazie ad una calamita, si può spostare il filtro che arresta gli infrarossi per farla diventare full spectrum. Divertente e con una qualità più che piacevole soprattutto migliorando le foto con Photo AI. Se riuscissi ad elminare il filtro su una vecchia mirrorless Olympus che possiedo, magari amplio questa possibilità usando le ottiche intercambiabili.

Nei lontani anni '85, incominciavo a studiare la fotogrfia per poi passare subito nel professionismo e, leggendo le varie riviste fotografiche dell'epoca italiane, nei confronti con i vari brand, i piccoli Zuiko Om avevano il miglior compromesso nelle prestazioni, considerando anche il rapporto qualità/prezzo. Quindi scelsi una Olympus Om4 molto usata ed acquistai lo Zuiko 50mm f:3,5 macro a Livigno, una città dove le tasse sono abolite. Lì, con la mitica pellicola Fuji Velvia, scattai bellissime foto di paesaggio. Ovviamente nel tempo acquistai altre camere professionali e Zuiko Om, per i lavori che dovevo svolgere. Nel 2004 passai al digitale con il sistema Olympus 4/3 ed avevo notato che adattando alcune lenti Zuiko Om, a tutta apertura non mi piacevano e quindi le ho vendute. Alcune le ho riacquistate (esempio lo Zuiko 55mm f:1,2) perché mi piace sfruttare al massimo le lenti 35mm o fullframe, come si dice adesso, nel micro 4/3 grazie al demoltiplicatore Metabones 0,64x sulla mia Panasonic G9. Notevole la luminosità e sfuocato che si guadagna con questo escamotage. Grazie per il rescoconto dei vari 50mm luminosi.

Too expensive. There's a big gap between the really cheap kodaks, Agfa etc. plastic cameras and this and the Pentax 17. I have a Nikon FM, but I am wanting something that is smaller, automatic and an upgrade in image quality from the cheap plastics that are available at the moment.

I like your reviews, but I find both the Rollei 35AF AND the Pentax 17 rather pointless. $800 and $500 respectively for products that give no more functionality than (albeit larger) used (but well maintained, and sometimes almost new if bought from Japan) SLRs at a third of the price. Also, if the small size is important, any number of digital point-and-shoot cameras with a myriad of extra functions will perform better for very little money.

I can relate to this video. You like lenses with a character, and I think character is maybe the main reason to shoot film in 2024

Awesome video!! please do more. And I actually like the hand writing, the presentation. Please don´t change!! For me personally, I´d choose the Olympus out of these :) Would be awesome if you could do a similar test with 28 mm lenses! And maybe for a 50mm v2 test, bring in that Contax and Leica lens and see if it really is better than those. Because some people in forums say that for example the Canon can actually be sharper than the Leica R summicron 50mm. I don't know, I have the Leica and Contax, but not Canon!

I own a Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4 in M42 mount. I am not sure it is as good as the SMC Pentax you have here, but I do love it on my Canon 5D Mark III. I have tried to use it on my 5DS, but that is where it begins to fall apart because of the higher resolution of the sensor. Nevertheless, it is a marvelous feat of engineering that these lenses look as good as they do on modern digital sensors when manufacturers were optimizing their lenses for the 4MP or so of resolution data of most 35mm film stocks of their day. Great video!

You're lining up the lenses backwards to the direction you're writing your chart. Lenses go from right to left, then the chart goes from left to right. I mean I understand it, but it just makes for a better feeling imo.

I started watching this video because the old Miranda's - not the ones produced in the 80's - are really good cameras that suffer from brand snobbery. However, I noted that the video is all about another kind of snobbery: the REAL photographer's snobbery. The viewfinder of this Miranda is in terrible conditions- it can be serviced, but you'll be spending some money to do so - 44 mm is not a standard for lenses, and it's not easy to find a reliable camera that's this old in such good conditions. Without servicing them, of course. Do I think 500 euros is what Pentax 17 should cost? No. However, it's a niche product and there's a price to pay for the lack of scale. Plus, the 17 is a great half frame camera that does a wonderful job in such a small piece of negative. There's a target for it, even if it's not you nor me.

People bitching about the price saying that “well you can get blah blah blah for there same price and a better camera “ are missing the point. Yes you can get an old camera does the same or more or less but the fact that PENTAX are keeping film analogue alive by investing in new cameras is a marvellous thing. Don’t forget film cameras back in the days were also not cheap. A canon Demi 1963 would cost you 1200 GBP in today’s equivalent. The price of a brand new film camera considering the investment in producing this products is amazing. Yes its not for everyone but the real film communities should support this produce even if they do not intend in buying one. Also how can you review a product without actually have one and using it extensively?? Too many wannabe film CZcamsr photographers jumping on the wagon.

I prefer the look and feel of the Olympus, and think the Pentax is most unattractive. Pity Olympus never made a full frame DSLR to use their wonderful zuikos on.

If you make another comparison video with more lenses then rather than testing on-axis at f/5.6 or f/16, where the results are very similar, you should show the corners at f/5.6, where differences are more likely. Personally I would test on-axis at f/1.4, f/2.8, and off-axis at f/1.4, f/2.8, f/5.6, but I can understand if that is too many tests.

You can easily unscrew the coupling prong on the Nikon if you are annoyed by it and are not using it on an early film SLR that requires it.

The Pentax 17 should have had manual focus (or AF). The zone focus defies the idea of saving exposures via expanding to half frame. What was gained, is lost in your zone focus guessing game.

I have the Pentax, my dad got it brand new and I got myself a Pentax K1markII because I wanted to use all his old Pentax lenses. its so nice they still works on the digital camera and with the catch in focus it's really easy to use manual lenses. just press the shutter button in and when your in focus it fires..

The Pentax-M 50mm 1.7 is still my favourite lens of all time. It was so much sharper than the Minolta 50mm 1.4 and 1.7 AF lenses I had.
