In 2007 I was in the middle of a really nasty custody battle with my ex-wife. She had kidnapped our two daughters and moved them from Michigan to Erie, PA. When we finally found her and the girls, we found them living in filth I won't go into details but needless to say because of the way she was living and forcing my girls to live I got full physical and Legal Custody of the girls and eventually in 2010 she lost her rights to them altogether. Why am I sharing this with you? When I found out how she was living and that they had been kicked out of their apartment and were now living in a very seedy motel I knew I needed help. Here's what happened. I arrived in Erie on Tuesday the 3rd of April went to where they were living (the motel) my ex-wife had called me and asked me for money for rent the week before and I told her I would give her landlord the money. She got angry at me, and I knew something was up. This is how I found out they were at a motel. When I got to the motel the room was a mess but none of my kid's stuff was there. I asked where it was and my ex said, “The landlord wouldn’t let me have anything”. So, I called the Landlord and explained who I was, and asked if I paid the back rent could I come get my daughter's things? There was a solid 30 seconds of silence the landlord finally said, “There was nothing worth saving in that apt!” She went on to tell me that her 16-year-old daughter couldn’t even go into the apartment because she was afraid one of my daughters was dead in there due to the smell. She told me that she had taken pictures and I asked if it was possible to get copies. She agreed. I knew I needed help and spent the next 3 weeks calling every Attorney in the book. I finally got to John’s office, and he agreed to meet with me on Tuesday the first. I spent all of Monday at the Law Library looking up statutes I could show John when we met. Thursday came and I met with John and told him everything and he said, “Man you have a good case” I said “But?” he said, “You’re a dude, and Pennsylvania has come a long way but???” My heart sunk! But then I remembered the pictures. I told him about them and asked, if I could get the landlord to bring them down would he look at them and reassess my case? He agreed and I called the landlord, and she brought them right down. We met her out in the lobby right by the front doors the bathroom was right behind me and that will become important soon. There were about 50 pictures in all and John started flipping through them while I looked over his shoulder. I got to around 25 and became very sick, I ran to the bathroom and vomited then tried to compose myself. When I finally came out of the restroom the landlord had left and John was standing there. He put both hands on my shoulders and said, “Richard those girls will be ours, there is no need for you to worry any longer”. I said to John I have spent almost everything I have this last month I only have $X (I will keep the exact amount to myself unless John tells me it is ok) but I will work day and night until I am dead to pay you what you want. He said, “Give me what you have, and I will let you know when I need more”. To this day John has never asked me for another penny. On May 3rd we went to court, and This is when I got Physical Custody of my daughters. You should ask John sometime about the dance he does in court when he knows he is winning lol!! John continued to represent My daughters and me throughout 4-5 different hearings, he has invited me and the girls to different outings and made us a part of his life. So why did I tell you all this? I wanted you to know that, when John talks about being kind, when he talks about “changing live”, he lives that throughout his life. I have accused him of being a guardian angel and no one will ever convince me any different. Lastly, I would love to hear this story from John’s perspective someday. We need more people, more Attorneys like John. He is an inspiration to all he comes into contact with.
