A very precise man. Fascinating interview. Modest too.
Thank you very much! :)
For some reason this won't load - shame.
Stephen was always best using 3/4 6/8 and triplets - it's almost a signature for him. Thanks for this from 11 years in the future
Thanks - so interesting to hear the music that influenced Stephen's work, and you can hear it!
Drag has helped the public to become more aware that gender can be a shifting concept and be more open towards the community...
Good singer
This was such fun to listen to dear Phil again. His act , outfits and the patter was always brilliant. RIP
No
You mean, "not for me but thank you anyway and I'll just pass and quietly move on."
🤩
Horrible technique - butting in rudely.
Sue Lawley does a much better job here than Roy Plomley did in 1980. Sondheim is much more revealing about his craft (and especially about his mother).
Roy Plomley seems very ill informed about Sondheim's career and works here and, even worse, not that interested in the answers to his 'questions by numbers' approach. There is very little rapport between him and Sondheim who, rightly, pulls him up when what he suggests is not quite right. Sondheim is an interesting talking head. He deserved better !
I never had any trouble understanding her when she sings.

They are, indeed, very fine.
Wonderful!

I hate hate hate hate when interviewers constantly begin their sentences with "but...", especially when artists are being interviewed. It's like they're trying to be healthily skeptical, but it comes across as though they're subtly accusing the interviewee of being dishonest, and ESPECIALLY so when it's something as subjective and personal as art.
You didn't mention any of the composers in this list of pieces. Why not?
Why? Because I just shared a radio programme. But if you click below "BROADCAST 16 AUG 1980 " some are automatically generated.
@@pantowriter Well, it doesn't give any of the composers' names.

Maurice Ravel x2; Stephen Sondheim x2; Johannes Brahms; George Gershwin; Igor Stravinsky
Now that was interesting.
Now that was interesting.
You could tell that he was trying really hard to not e irritated with her comments
A fab act. Not many left
Thanks Phil you are one of the best you always brighten up my day I would love to see you live are you on tour any time soon.?
Sadly Phil Starr died several years ago.
Not very likely!
Choices: 3:14 Porgy and Bess ("the finest American musical...I always wish that I'd written it.") 6:35 (The Ballad of) Sweeney Todd ("probably the show that was easiest for me to write") 11:58 Piano Concerto No. 2 by Johannes Brahms 17:27 Finishing the hat (Sunday in the Park with George) 20:43 Ravel Piano Concerto in D major left hand 25:30 Aaron Copland Music for the theatre 29:50 Pacific Overtures opening number 30:47 reputation of being a pessimist? (Dour, yes, pessimist, no) 32:06 Symphony of Psalms ("I think one of the great pieces of the 20th century")
1985.. London.. I missed Cradle Will Rock from jetlag. Next night got a 1/2 priced ticket to Les Miserables. Patti Lupone, Colm Wilkinson.. a truly mind altering experience.
We just never know what fate has in store, but everything happens for a reason!
R.I.P John Bardon
I saw this in New York, my college did Blithe Spirit that year too. Both versions were amazing.
Yes, she's allowed to wear whatever she wants...but it's going to attract attention. EVERYONE knows that. Get over it and let's move on. And as mentioned here already...she may have asked him something about them beforehand...we don't know the full context.
Sondheim's decision to compose his scores "makes you very ambitious - perhaps arrogant too?" And he's so polite in response to this typical BBC specimen.
you're missing the subtlety of intonation, you ignorant fuck
This recording has drastically cut back the running time of the songs. The original broadcast was much longer.
Yes, the PODCAST / download version does this for "rights" reasons.
Recorded on a Maris Piper
Bigger than QE2, in Graham's book lol Fantastic!
I knew this had occurred, but I didn’t know I would ever have a chance to hear it. Now I look forward to listening to the second one.
He's always beeN a leary bastard
Your probably 100 times worse👍
he seems to have been loved .
Richard was a friend of a friend from my acting days in London, and after the death of that friend we became very good friends. He was such wonderful company with stories and tales from his life. Sadly for Richard he suffered from kidney problems and needed dialysis for a large part of his adult life. When fitter he was able to visit us in Spain. In 2009 we saw his health was declining and in 2010 sadly his kidneys failed and he died. We lost him at only 60 years old. We were robbed of a wonderful friend.
@@pantowriter i just watched the filmettes and thought a little sad no one had commented after all this time
hello was just parousing you tube at nearly 4 a.m saw this ,it is now 2021 never knew of this guy but the tribute was so lovely had to say hi going to watch part 2 now
Richard was such a super man, so friendly and warm. Thank you for your comment, it reminded us that we'd posted this.
The interviewer suggests that it was arrogant of Sondheim to want to compose the music as well as write the lyrics in his shows. That's quite insulting on her part. Was is arrogant of Kubrick to want to write and direct his films? Some artists want complete control. There's nothing strange or arrogant about that. It's their work.
Goodbye Jim 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😢💔💔💔💔💔
What did he say?
Off script before they started he said "they're fine." It can be interpreted that he's referring to her breasts and she's just asked him how they look.
Oh wow, you can actually understand the words she’s saying when she talks. Because you sure can’t when she SINGS.
are you kidding me? watch her sing ladies who lunch. it could not be more enunciated.
This woman went to Juilliard for crying out loud! You don't get better vocal training than that! There's just no pleasing some people, they hear what they wanna hear.
Rozzie Riley I’m quite familiar with Julliard and the school’s reputation but that doesn’t mean I have to like or appreciate her as a performer. She’s a huge star of the stage but not everyone likes her. I think she has her strengths but is overall highly overrated. (Not to mention she seems like a pretty horrible person with a shitty personality but that’s really another story and not the point.)
Rozzie Riley And by the way it is not a matter of hearing what I “want to hear” What a manipulative way to discount those who might disagree with your opinion. It’s not what I want to hear, it’s what I ACTUALLY hear.
