Bikepacking, cycling adventures & MORE!
My name is Salty Beard (aka Rob). I've been falling off bikes since the 70s. The good thing is that I keep getting back on.
2024 signifies an official name-change to Salty Beard Adventures to better suit the content I create, as I bring different cycling and outdoor passions. While cycling still drives my passion, I have many adventures and misadventures to draw on past, present, and future experiences. I will continue to create content about cycling, outdoor gear, camping, bushcraft, backwoods cooking, photography, filmmaking, and exploring the great outdoors by whatever mode of transport I may choose at that time.
I’m open to your questions and content suggestions, so please leave comments or email me.

Awesome!
This was awesome! Great to meet you this weekend at the summit and to get that Gatineau camping in. PS: It's Ron, the bees guy. Cheers
Was a blast! Glad to have met you too.
Love your video !how long from the ferry to Langford ?
About 90 min or so… depending where in Langford you need to go
Nice video Sir! I am wanting to protect some areas on my carbon fiber mountain bike. Your video helps with some great ideas to have a successful install. I hear from your accent that you're from the Midwest or Canada. The word out gave it away. LOL. I am from Michigan so I totally get it. Have a blessed day Salty.
Yeah, bud ! BC boy !
I just ordered this from rei on sale plus a matching bottom bracket gonna be sweet
Excellent / mine has been holding up well, but if you put on big miles, the GX cassette lifespan is only 500-800km (says SRAM) - and the chains wear quickly. I used to rotate 3 chains to extend the life. The XX1 chains are almost 3x the price but tests show they last 10-12 time longer. If you can, swap to an XX1 chain, and your cassette will last longer, and if you can buy another chain after 500km, do it, and swap every 500, until they are stretched out. By then you’ll need a new cassette. Nothing is cheap eh!?
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures yikes so In 300-500 miles I’ll have to change the cassette? That seems awfully low if that’s the case I may return it and go shimano I’ll run the stock chain it comes with and then look into the xx1 thanks for that suggestion btw would the xx1 cassette last a long time im thinking I could just upgrade to that cassette if and when this one goes IF it lasted a lot longer than the gx
Thats what the SRAM “white sheets” say but in real life it’s much longer if you take care of your gear and if you rotate chain you can do 10,000km - for me that’s 10-12 months. Just be on top of your maintenance. In a year or two you’ll see how it’s going. I’ve gone through 6 GX chains, 2 GX cassettes in 35,000 km. On my third cassette when I switxhed to XX1 chains (2) and it really slowed the wear on the cassette.
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures nice it seems you really get what you pay for in the xx1 stuff with sram although the group set I ordered was more than my whole bike lol
Just stumbled on this beautiful film while searching for bikepacking studf. While I never met Iohan, I was following his adventures and I was also deeply affected when I learned of his passing. Thanks for the beautiful tribute and reminder of a great human being. 🙏

Thanks for putting this video together. It's awesome! I really like your map graphics.
Glad you enjoy it! -- these were some of my earlier videos. I used to paint maps for magazines & books prior to major hand injury, and this was the first time I had painted again. It was fun putting them together.
We love this!! So looking forward to riding in to the Walbran this summer!
Hope you enjoy it! -- I just sent you an email about the Bugaboo connector.... totally doable.

Oh, finish coming off in the dishwasher, what a bummer
Yeah, I agree. I would be willing to spend a tad more for raw titanium.
Hey Rob, heads up your link in the description still points to your old website and now 404s.
Thanks for the catch, I’ll fix tonight! 🫶🏼
Looks cool. Thought I had seen it all by now, but Gerber has reinvented the wheel. Certainly worth a look
There are so many options out there. I’ve seen lots of camping utensils over my life, and I probably barely scratched the surface. But I the ComplEAT is kind of clever. A little room for improvement though.
That looks shit mate
As in “like shit” or “the shit” ? 🤣
More gear to renew for upcoming season :D
Always something new… but sometimes it’s better to just make do, and get out and ride.
I'm a fan of the Uco Switch Spork. Had it for a few years now and it does a really good job. I have one in my lunchbox for work too. Always get the job done and done well. I do like the tongs/spatula option though. Could really be handy.
UCO makes some great products. There definitely a lot of options out there for camping utensils.
I don't think I'd bring them bikepacking, but those look nice for car camping. I don't bring a frying pan with me on bikepacking trips. I try to bring as little as possible, and my mug has worked out pretty well for my meals so far. I have been trying making my own dehydrated meals and they have worked out pretty well. The rest of the time I'm stopping at local restaurants along the way, so I don't think I'm really lacking in the food department.
I find that if I’m on more of a road tour or with easy town access, I love swinging buy a market near the end of the day and getting inspiration if what to cook that night. This is when I like to have a few extra things like a small folding frypan. But for hardcore bikepacking I’ll usually carry just one utensil & a good (small) knife
Oops ! Not made for the french talking countries. “Gerber“ means “to vomit“, “to throw up“ or “to puke“, in France ! Hahaha !
I always had a laugh at the Gerber Babyfood….. pea purée yup, they named that right! 🤮
That’s gonna make me hurrel , Mate . 🤮
Yup - blah
Thanks for the review. The Gerber is interesting.
Thanks for watching!
that so cool thank you
🤜🏻🤛🏼
Looks cool, but looks expensive, I dunno, Ill think about it. Your vids are great. Thanks Beardo!
True, some may say expensive at $35 USD / $44 CDN (at Cabelas) - but for all the single utensils I’ve bought over the years, I have to say this is a nice set, especially the tongs. Is there room for a little improvement - yes…. I’d like them to have a harder scratch resistant coating, or just raw Titanium like my Sea to Summit Ti-Spork
"Quite well ergonomic I'd say..." Love it! That's a pretty nifty set.
They are indeed.
though looking up images of the coating issue and even if it has something to do with the dishwasher I'd question the overall material quality. A straight, uncoated metal would be nice.
I agree - while I’ve used mine a bunch, the metal multi-tool is scraping off the finish of the anodizing. I’d rather pay $5-7 more for raw, Ti utensils,
I was just poking around on their website, and they do make a different "Multifork" in Titanium. Perhaps they will offer this set in Titanium down the road.
@@teddgram Yeah, I saw that.. hopein that will be the case.
woah the tongs blew my mind! looks rad, perfect for my veggie bacon aha.
Totally !!
It's kinda cool. I like gadgets and Gerber products.....yep...I'll be adding it to the kit just because.
Be warned… I’ve “almost” lost the little multitool thing twice. I’ve painted it orange now.
When I bikepack I am into basics. My good ole 85 cent long handled spoon has seen me through years. Bagged food, cereal, scrambled eggs, peanut butter, soup, noodles and last but my least when I deserve a treat....ice cream. Probably a bunch more stuff but you get the idea.
I agree when you really are going light, and if you're doing a lot of dehydrated meals. While I like bagged meals for simplicity, weight, and of all things, garbage/odour management. I tend to make simple meals now, and really like this set. I'll probably go back to my super long Sea to Summit spork at times, or bring fork & spoon from this set. Options are nice. Beats bringing a mixed set of things when you want cook something fun.
You brought up some good points!!
Thanks -- I'm really liking this set.
For my long day hikes I might still stick with the spork as I'm not sure to use it depending on what happens. For everything else, these are awesome!
I do agree with wanting to go "single utensil" at times... but I think that if I'm going to pare things down, I'm just going to bring the spoon & fork from this set. I really like the shape. And the fork tines are longer.
Your videos keep getting better. Nice!
Thanks 😊 - spread the word !
🙏
peace
Is that a Dress Maker 850 sewing machine that you are using?
An Arrow 900 Zig-Zag, one of my mom's first sewing machines. Post-WWII the Sanshin MFG Co. made machines that were rebadged for various companies such as Arrow, Sewmor, Wardana, Atlas, and even Kenmore -- just to name a few. It's a beast of a little machine. A little finicky at times. Needs to be really clean to work well.
In world where most people default to buying everything, it’s refreshing to see people take the time and effort to make the thjngs they need when possible. Kudos to you sir!
Thanks. It was a learning experience and my bag is still going strong. I got a new gravel bike last year and was thinking about doing another but opted to have a friend who makes bags build me a custom one. So the money was well spent knowing it was going into the hands of a young family and not a corporation.
Did you find that the saddle rubs against the inner thigh after extended periods, riding with pelvis rotated?
Yes... in both positions. It's completely the edge design. Not that thrilled with the edge. I'm going to pick up a Tantalus model and see what improvements have been made, and how well it works (for me) on my MTB/bikepacking rig.
@@SaltyBeard_Adventures Thanks so much for this info. Like many relatively short men, I do have a relatively narrow pelvis and this is always a concern for me. Only the very narrow-nosed saddles fit me.
Incredible resource and totally understand broadening the scope. We are multi-dimensional beings.
Thanks man... for now, I trudge along at my day job, dreaming of being outdoors. Having fun meeting people and talking about past, present, and future adventures.
Great video 👍🏼
Thanks Leo 🤘🏼
Guess I never realized how capable these gravel bikes were ❤❤
oh yeah... they rip, they can sent it too!
Wow ! What a great vid all around and fun
Glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting the differences between the hammock setups for backpacking vs bikepacking.
I’d be interested to hear what differences you picked out. I don’t think there is a bias in set up based on mode of travel. I seen many different ways people like to hang their gear. Might be a different way to package it. Maybe for weather too? I hate playing with gear when it’s raining, so I pack it a particular way. I’d love to hear any tips / tricks you have. 😃
great video man! I love your recording+presentation style. Calm and collected :)
Thanks :) I appreciate that! Hope you enjoyed, it was one of my first videos. I've learned a lot since then.
Are the body wraps still available ?

Great break down! What aero bars are you using?
Just a simple set of Profile design 35A / nice shape for both my gravel & MTB bikepacking rig - you can see them on the bike in the background. Have a nose bridge & middle bridge for electronics
Awesome! Thanks, Ill check it out@@SaltyBeard_Adventures
Any advice on sizing for a 5'11" rider? I can't decide if a 54 or 56 is going to work better for me.
I’m 5-8 & 30” inseam… low end of a 54cm but after talking directly with my rep, went down a size. I was on the fence for a while too. For me, I think it was the right choice for bikepacking. Feels nice on spicy trails.
