The webinar on “The Social Impact of a Changing World Society, 1950-2024,” sponsored by the Center for the Study of Economy and Society at Cornell, features John W. Meyer, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Stanford. I have four decades of experience with China and have seen its radical transformation since the 1980s. I am listening to John Hopcroft, and it is concerning. For some time, I thought like he did, desiring to improve China and help them achieve better thinking and processes. I was hopeful, encouraged, and wanted to see a strong, happy, wealthy China. But in the back of my mind, knowing the culture, I worried about what might happen if China achieved world power. Have you considered this might go wrong? The educational culture limits China's potential culture. If China had the power the US has, it might be bad for many, including the Chinese themselves. You should know the culture and system you are seeking to strengthen. For example, what if our scientists and academics, like you on the Manhattan Project, sought to strengthen the thinking, knowledge, and education systems of Japan and Germany? Luckily for the world, the flow of great thinkers was primarily out of Germany and Europe. When I was young and first learning to understand Chinese society in the 1980s, I read the controversial historian Bo Yang. You would be advised to do the same. I thought it was an extreme view at the time, but much of it was prescient. I am disturbed by your naivete and arrogance. You try to fundamentally strengthen the system you claim you do not understand; you say you do not know the language or the culture, and that seems fine to you. Your hubris is impressive. Your willful ignorance of society, culture, politics, and their goals is inexcusable. Everything you say about the system and your moves to strengthen it is spot on regarding what needs to be done to create a powerful China. But what would the excellence you seek to achieve mean for freedom, security, and maintaining peace? As I get older, I consider where to contribute. I thought it would be China. Now, the door is closing, and for a reason. I am sad about this, but it is a reality. Would I want to strengthen training in technology used to support a totalitarian state? Your computer science, as you develop that in China, serves to strengthen and deepen totalitarianism in China and threaten others. Have you considered that? Maybe China will get on a different track, but why support it in the direction it is going and has been going since Xi consolidated power? And deeper, why do you not understand or seek to understand the society you are seeking to strengthen in terms of technology and, hence, power?

Alfred Russel Wallace independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection (published 1858). War is merely a symptom of Systemic failure, not it's cause. Political Reform during an economic degrowth is insufficient to maintain Social Management of a Governance devolving beyond the Imperialist totalitarian Dystopia that we've sought to regain. Jeffrey Sachs is another Climate Hoax conspiracy tin foil quack, with sophisticated garble he propagates to appease his viewers. So now we are understating who or whom initiated the climate agenda think tank. I am elated I stumbled into this channel, I was really curious who or whom initiated the hoax. This introduction reminds me of a person I was knew that was a PhD. and this person was confounded why I would not direct this person as a Dr. by title, I reminded this individual that I was not that ignorant fool that needed to see a piece of paper on the wall identifying the accomplishments in order to justify my security of whom I was. That as it may, lacked sophistication of knowledge of the current events at the years of experience Sachs had as a servant to his governing superiors promoting their agendas. It is ludicrous to even fathom that Sachs was even part of this agenda. As an intelligent individual that claimed about China foreign policy, it clearly appears that Sachs did not really follow Chinese history and it's involvement of the 21st Century. You cannot compare China to what it was 40-50 years ago, China Communism has left the current government in the wings and now has turned a blind eye to Capitalism and forced into a rouge Democracy. Now we are dealing with a dying West Collapse US Empire fighting tooth and nail to stay in control. We are 8 billion precious humans today and every year another 80 million net new precious humans join us. Just to accommodate these folks requires construction of one New York City worth of infrastructure food education healthcare etc etc etc EVERY SINGLE MONTH. This on a planet that before fossil fuels based fertilizer barely fed 2 billion. US population of 330 million represents less than 5% of total population. The other 95% have had their fill of endless US militaristic adventures. In first 22 years of this century US has been involved in dozens of conflicts of choice. Before Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine find US illegal Iraq war. Over one million dead Iraqis, infrastructure demolished, environmental catastrophes, militias roam the streets. Afghanistan's gruesome statistics after 20 years of unauthorized US occupation even worse. Congressional Military Industrial Complex controlled by corporate Warfare Queens is bankrupting our nation. $30 trillion in debt with annual $800+ billion in visible funds and equal amount in dark money is suicidal. 750 overseas bases many hated by locals further drag US down. 20th century barbarism has no place in our times. Simultaneously US ignores the threat caused by adding 51 billion tons of greenhouse gases to our shared atmosphere annually. Heat trapped by these gases is equivalent to heat released by detonating five Hiroshima nukes every single SECOND. Morbid old men playing tin soldier gunboat diplomacy, flinging sanctions in every direction a flashing red warning light that has the potential to take down civilization as we've known it.

A thoughtful discussion. China is a rising power...for the moment. I'm glad Mr. Nye mentioned demographics since it is one of the few areas that can be calculated and projected (e.g. it takes 40 years to get a 40 year old), and the impacts of population as age cadres is well known and can also be predicted. Much of the rest of the Great Power dynamics outlined by Mr. Nye is interesting but is opinion and speculation. China's medium and longer term threat isn't the USA but instead it's demographic collapse. China is the fastest aging country in the world. In about 2018 the average Chinese was older than the average American. An analysis of the 2020 Chinese census data by Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (a Chinese think tank) shows that by 2080 there will be more post-65 pensioners than workers, and that the current population of 1.3 billion will decline to less than 600 million by 2100. The recently updated UN report on China's imploding demographics largely agrees with the Shanghai think tank's projections. In the medium and long term it is hard to see China as a significant threat to the USA much less China being the new world hegemon if China has half-empty mega cities of pensioners. It is also a significant question how a society with more pensioners than workers can function, especially if China doesn't escape the middle income trap. In the meantime the USA is one of the few countries in the developed world that has a stable demography, which is mainly due to significant immigration and a decent birth rate. It is interesting that by 2100 America may have a larger (and much younger) population than China. What remains to be seen is how China's quickly-aging population, declining worker force, and increasing social spending on pensioners will impact productivity and economic growth - which the CCP relies upon to show its legitimacy. At the least it is likely that modest growth in China's productivity (which is low by comparison to countries like the USA and Germany) will slow down significantly, and that growth will plateau below what the CCP needs to meet massive debt obligations and provide prosperity for its citizens. So far China has defied gravity on many issues, and perhaps the CCP will find a solution. Mr. Nye also makes very good points on America's strengths (energy and food independence, reserve currency, technology/innovation, immigration & good demographics), which are also China's weaknesses (major energy and food importer; RMB not likely to be a reserve currency any time soon due to capital controls, no likely immigration). It is curious that these are mirror images of each other.

I agree that there are opportunities for collaboration between the USA and CCP: AI, climate change, addressing pandemics. There will be disagreements between the CCP and the USA: trade, Taiwan, technology theft Mr. Sachs Prisoner's Dilemma example is a good one. America has chosen to deescalate for 30 years and China has escalated, so the CCP has won the Prisoner's Dilemma economic game with shameless IP theft, violating its agreement when it joined the WTO, closing its markets, forced technology transfer, socialist support for SOEs. But America was too naïve and gullible to understand that America has lost to China for 30 years, with America suffering from a hollowed out American Midwest industrial base (now called the Rust Belt), millions of Americans losing their good-paying jobs, loss of technology, and endless trade deficits due to cheating and theft by the CCP. Now the CCP wants another round of the Prisoner's Dilemma game and the USA now understands the CCP will lie and cheat. I suspect that America will no longer be naïve and gullible. The rest of the West is also waking up to how China cheats and lies - and also to the horrific CCP genocide of the Uyghur in Xinjiang documented in a August 2022 UN report . So to misquote President Ronald Reagan: Don't trust and verify.

Many American scholars of Sino-US relations have a major flaw in their research, because they cannot read Chinese and can only quote English sources, which are often biased and inaccurate. I have read this gentleman's article, among Asian countries, he seems to have only a partial understanding of Japan, but he glorifies Japan's history of invasion, casting it as one of ambition rather than destruction.

Mr Fukuyama your end of history and whole vision about the future, from the collapse of the eastern block to today appeared to be totally wrong. Thucydides in the international relations and Aristotelis in the level of the state politics seam still to be the one and only science in a sea of « religious ideologists » of our era. Your whole error starts with the wrong perception of the meaning of Ancient Greek terms such as Δημοκρατία and ελευθερία.

He's a hypocrite, if he loves China (Xi's China) so much he should move there and live there like an ordinary chinese citizen under the CCP oppression ! Jeffrey D. Sachs, you're a hypocrite and a traitor ! Stop saying bs about US to justify Xi's human rights abuses !

You know, I've listened to you, but now I'm realizing that you're dead wrong. We will have a nuclear war, and I'll talk is over! So in the end nothing really matters. Human pride arrogance and self-righteousness will put an end to everything. A restart of the whole planet will occur, thousands of years after a nuclear disaster. So talk is cheap, education is cheap, universities are cheap, weapons are the only thing that matters to the big fat ego of humans, nuclear power is the end result of humans stupidity and their imaginations and creations. I'm not even educated and my words are more true than your words coming out of the very educated and intelligent mind.
