"Consistently Yours, Pluto" by Thought Industry - Drum Cover
Drum cover of "Consistently Yours, Pluto" by Thought Industry from the album Black Umbrella. This series of videos is of me sitting down & playing/recording in 1 take with no practice before. So, the playing is not a faithful recreation of Jared Bryant's parts, it's just a 1 take challenge for me and way of paying homage that was important to me as I was coming up.

    As many have noted, don’t build a room like this. No floating floor (the first step in sound isolation)?? And no drywall on the inside (between external and internal wall) basically means it’s just a very thick, one room wall. Not to mention, no ventilation… 😮

  • @brandoncanonica460
    @brandoncanonica460 Před rokem

    I've gotta ask, why did you choose to leave off the interior sheet rock of the external wall as well as the outer layer on your interior wall???? This is not sarcasm; I am genuinely curious since I'm in the planning and research phase of building mine.

    how did you anchor the wall bottom to the concrete? Tapcons? I know you mentioned you used a felt type material under the wall between the concrete, wasnt sure if you drilled through that felt to attach structure to existing concrete floor of garage. Thanks

    • @md4man
      @md4man Před 2 lety

      Hello. The walls are not connected to the floor in any way, they just sit on top of the floor, with the felt in between. They are heavy enough that there is no concern about them sliding around (assuming we never drive a car into them but that would cause issues, even if the wall was connected to the floor. We wanted to eliminate any direct connection between the walls & the concrete floor, so we built them free-standing. Thanks for watching!

    Great results man! Ultimately, impressing the people here who have no idea what they are talking about wasn't your goal, but the "iPhone" dB meter really doesn't do your project justice. One could falsely believe the peaks were @ 100dB and the resulting level drop was only or 14dB with first door closed and 21 with second door closed (peaks), when in reality the peaks on live acoustic drumming are around 130dB. Thus a true drop of 44 and 51dB respectively, and a drop of 62dB (on peaks) outside of garage door. Wow! It would have been cool, for the naysayers here if your neighbor had walked to the street and shown the readings there. Since the "structure" is your new sound transducer, a reading at 1 meter would allow inverse square calculations at the street and at your neighbor's house. But let's use the closed garage door peak of "68" as your 1 meter reading - if the street is 4 meters away, that calculates to 56 at the street. Very impressive. With the distance to your neighbor's homes and further STC of your neighbor's walls, your kit is clearly inaudible in their homes. However, as some mentioned, it could be quite audible an a neighbor's basement, if those are common in your area, as sound travels quite well through concrete and compacted earth, just like is does through water. The only part of your project that appears unnecessary is the use of hat or resilient channel on an already decoupled wall. It would be effective at aiding decoupling of the inner wall from the inner bottom plate, and therefore, the floor, however the kit is sitting on a non-decoupled floor. Either way though, great results! Thank you for sharing your build process.

    Hi! Thank you so much for sharing this... I’m planning on gettinng either an ID 44 or a clarett 4 pre usb to start record my drums. Both of them are able to expand via ADAT when I will get more mics. I’ve been checking everything I can in order to make a more conscious choice. From what I’ve heard here there’s not a huge difference in terms of audio quality. I like the air feature on the snare drum, and I’m not sure if the id44 would have such a similar feature...I plan to use my iPad Pro 10,5” running Auria or Cubasis with the apple camera connection kit, which allows me to go more portable... the id44 seems to be more convenient because I seem to be able to control more parameters once I go to stand alone mode, not having to use the software for turning phantom power on/Off, or using the pad, or the high pass filter... in my current situation, if you had to choose which one would you pick? The id44 or the clarett 4Pre? A friend of mine said that he didn’t like the sound of Audient Pres because they sound too WiFi, where as the clarett Pres sound more warm to him... he said that Audient has quality in their products, but it’s not his sound... I like dirty sounding drums, but I also like the detail and separation of different instruments in the mix... any thoughts on this subjects would be really appreciated..., thank you very much...🙏🙏🙏

  • @PeacelandMusic
    @PeacelandMusic Před 5 lety

    Thank you for doing this! They both sound "good". Air appears to add clarity. The Audient appears to have more oomph. Is it really just the interface, that's what I'm wondering? There seems to be more low end on the Audient, slightly more beef. On 2nd listen with higher level in headphones, at first the Audient just sounds "louder", but there does appear to be more detail in the Audient than the Clarett (especially notable with the low tom). The Clarett seems more pleasing to my ear, but my guess is this could be easily dialed in with EQ and Compression on the Audient, while also maintaining a bit more detail with the Audient. Thanks again! p.s. - I have read there are some latency issues with Audient, however, which was disappointing. What is your experience with the latency?

    • @md4man
      @md4man Před 5 lety

      Thanks for watching & your comment. On latency, I experienced more with the Clarett than the Audient. For recording, I experience minimal enough latency with the Audient that I can just plug in the tracks into a mixing project & am good to go. With the Clarett tracks, I'd have to nudge them to have them in the correct position. I did not change laptops for recording when changing interfaces, nor did I change any settings in the laptop (with the exception of changing drivers for the different devices) when I made the switch. I used the same Windows 7 laptop for both the Clarett & Audient devices. Just to clarify, the ASP880 is connected via ADAT to an Audient iD44. So, the latency difference I described is really between the 8PreX & the iD44. I have no idea if the Clarett would have had less latency on a Mac, or even a Windows 10 computer. Perhaps the latency difference between the 2 devices would not exist on other than a Windows 7 machine. Since this video, I updated my recording laptop to Windows 10 & still am getting no noticeable latency. By the way, I use the 8PreX & iD44 only for recording. I mix on a different computer & can not compare latency experienced in mixing between the 2 devices. I can not vouch for the performance of either for mixing. I much prefer the Focusrite Control software to Audient's. It was just much more robust, in my opinion. So for me, Focusrite wins the control software battle but Audient won the latency battle.

    pretty good result. i don't see why ppl are being negative. you can't hear the drums at all once the garage door's closed.... if the goal was getting isolation from the neighbors so you can play any time of day then mission accomplished. if the goal was building a perfectly sound-proofed recording studio with top of the line acoustic treatment, then no... but i think the goal was the former not the latter so ppl shouldn't judge based on their own idea of what they want the application to be... good job

It (seems) pretty clear that each option adheres to it's reputation: the Presonus XMAX preamps sound basically clear, and maybe a tad fatter (by comparison) with the Focusrite, which has (a bit) more high end detail, and we definitely hear the AIR setting's upper midrange crispness. Very helpful example!

    I don't understand why you compromised the room to have in wall power outlets throught the green glued double gypsum. If you wanted inwall stuff, you'd create another simple wall inside to have installations. If not, you would just do an installations runway along the walls.
