The shafts below went down 920m and up to one million tons of coal were pulled up to the surface by the rare friction winding system which is still on site in our museum of Nottinghamshire Industrial heritage which is run by the Nottinghamshire Mining heritage Centre CIC

20 years on since the Clipstone Colliery closed. Works are now being carried out to fill a huge void below heapstead building number 2. This void is known as the fan drift as it was the exhaust air duct from the up shaft under headstocks number two. It measured 7m x11m x 23m and is now filled to ensure stability of the listed buildings above.

It’s lovely to see that it has having some love put back into it. As a younger kid living there we all used to go in there explore and play games even the showers near the pit stop before they got knocked down for the new build housing. There used to be a challenge for new times to tie a bedsheet to the top. That’s a propper childhood no smashing stuff up just pure exploration and friendship. Thanks for making me smile. S.

They usually fill the shafts with inert rock, allowing for methane venting and cap with concrete. I remember the large piles of stones they used to fill the shafts at Bickershaw Colliery. Clipstone shafts were quite deep if I remember around 3000ft

It's a shame it's all being filled in tbh, they should just pour money into turning the whole thing into a massive tourist attraction, seeing the coal face, riding the train below ground etc. So much potential for many old collieries but instead they just fill them all in and forget about them :/

You realise the shafts were filled years ago, right? They would cost 10’s of Millions to excavate, let alone with flooding heave and collapse there will be nothing left of the coal faces, they will be fully closed up.
