BNSF Intermodal w/ Foreign Power in Skull Valley, AZ

I was treated to quite a number of surprises while catching this BNSF intermodal train in Skull Valley, AZ. I have watched trains at this location a few times before, but this is the first time that I have seen one heading in this direction. The engine consist is huge, with ten locomotives leading. However, the last half are not powered up and are just being towed along for the ride. This is kn...

Here is part two of my Arizona Railway Museum video series. This episode is divided into two parts. The first clip shows some items displayed near the front of the museum. Included are a concrete track tie, a wheelset from the tender of a wrecked steam locomotive, a set of couplers, and some semaphore signals. The second clip shows Southern Pacific caboose #4740 and some motor cars. SP #4740 is...
A Visit to the Verde Canyon Railroad

On 4-28-19, I visited the Verde Canyon Railroad, a small tourist line in Clarkdale, AZ. I arrived just as the day's run was returning to the depot from its four hour round trip to Perkinsville and back. Afterward, I was able to watch the crew perform some switching operations. Leading the way were two vintage locomotives that were both built in the 1950s. One is an ex Southern Pacific GP9r and ...

Here is the first part of a series of video walkthroughs that I filmed during my visit to the Arizona Railway Museum a few weeks ago. This episode focuses on a train dispatcher's panel from the Southern Pacific Railroad. Built in the late 1950s by the Union Switch and Signal Company, this Traffic Control Center (TCC) panel was used to control train traffic between Tucson, AZ and El Paso, TX. As...
Vintage "The Fall Guy" Toy Truck by Ertl

While at my local hobby shop a few weeks ago, I found myself grabbing some random vehicles that were in a loose items bin to use as scenery items for my model train set ups. In doing so, I discovered this vintage toy truck made by the Ertl Company as a promo for "The Fall Guy", an action/adventure TV show that was originally broadcast on ABC from November 1981 to May 1986 that stared Lee Majors...

On 12-1-17, I was able to attend a meeting at the Olympic Model Railroad Society in Olympia, Washington. The club is located in the basement of a building on the Thurston County Fairgrounds that was originally built in 1941. They have a pretty decent sized layout at the club, and I was able to bring along two of my engines to run on it. My two engines are the US Army GP10 and the Allegheny Midl...

This is a review of my Alco HH600/660 switcher engine from the Master Line Locomotives series by Atlas. It is factory equipped with a 2nd generation QSI Titan sound decoder. The detail is great, and the sound is amazing. The operator figure and painted dials on the control stand in the cab are also a nice touch. This is a fantasy paint scheme. The real Santa Fe #2312 was actually an Alco HH1000...

This is a review of the HO scale 4-8-8-4 Big Boy from Rivarossi. It is factory equipped with an ESU Loksound DCC decoder. It is not as detailed as other Big Boys on the market. Rivarossi has been using the basic tooling of this model for nearly 50 years now. However, the great sound more than makes up for the less detail. I was able to get this for $299.99 on liquidation sale at my local hobby ...

Here is another vintage Tyco accessory that I got in late September. This is the first electrically operated accessory in my antique train collection. It was later simply called the Freight Unloading Boxcar. This item was produced from 197...

Here is an interesting addition to my train collection. This refrigerated boxcar has generator sounds that cycle on and off randomly as long as the car is receiving track power. It also has moving bearing caps on the trucks. This model represents an ex-FGE "Solid Cold" unit owned by Santa Fe as they appeared around 1995.

This is a quick test run of my new Athearn Genesis GP9 with sound. This model appears to represent an ex-CB&Q passenger unit. The working Gyralites on both ends are a really neat feature. My name is John Warner, and I was a Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, which I was in from 1965 till 1969. I Spent some of my best years , here at Sembach AB, in the 2134 Comm Sqdn, from September 1966 to September 1969. Having been born in Northern Germany in 1945 and emigrating to New York City in 1953, this tour was “Going Back Home“. I loved the Air Force and would have made it a Career Move, had it not been for the fact that I was an Aircraft Mechanic, for Pan Am, in New York City, at Idlewild Airport, which later became JFK International Airport. I joined the Air Force in 1965, after getting my Draft Notice, since I always wanted to do a stint in the Air Force, knowing that I had to fulfill my Military Obligation. After returning Stateside in 1969, I went back to Pan Am, as a Aircraft Mechanic, at JFK, until “The Handwriting was on the wall, about the longevity, or lack thereof, of Pan Am‘s survivability, and was given an offer to start at Delta Air Lines, in 1991, with all of my Pan Am seniority, since I had experience on Pan Am‘s Airbus A-310 Aircraft, that Delta wanted to buy, and that they needed qualified Maintenance Personnel for. THAT WAS A “NO BRAINER“, knowing Pan Am’s financial situation and I moved to Atlanta, with my wife , Kathleen, whom I had married in 1989. I worked there, for Delta, till 2017, having now accrued 54 years combined seniority, and only retired then because of Kathy’s failing health. We had moved to Fort Lauderdale in 2008, since our daughter lived there and had our first grandchild. We had also bought a cabin on Lake Champlain, near Plattsburgh New York, in 1990, just down the road from Plattsburgh Air Force Base shortly before Transitioning to Delta, in Atlanta. From 1991, through 2017, I commuted , weekly, from either Ft. Lauderdale, or Plattsburgh , to Atlanta weekly, to go to work. I loved the “commuting“, since I loved to fly, free of charge, non-reving. I did this for the next 26 years, until I retired in 2017, due to Kathy‘s failing health. Kathy “left us“ in 2020, due to Lung Cancer. With my Yorkie, Bentley, I spend winters in Ft. Lauderdale, and Summers in Plattsburgh, actuallly, Port Douglass, on Lake Champlain, just south of Plattsburgh. Job wise, between Pan Am, the U.S.Air Force and Delta Airlines, I have lead a Charmed Work Career and think about Sembach Air Base and my time there every day!!!!!

My parents moved when I was being discharged, so I was doing everything on my own. I was paying rent, tuition, books, and car payments while struggling. I worried about becoming homeless. I applied for corrections with the DOJ/ BOP. There was no test, just a written application, and I got hired 3 months later. What a shit job. On the midnights I had 188 inmates to myself. That's the tour we did building maintenance, cooked two meals (1400 trays), and got inmates ready for transports. Inmates never bothered me. Fellow staff were rats and snitches. The city police hated us because so many CO's get arrested or play cop. They wrote us parking tickets while we worked. It took me three years to get out of there. I don't recommend corrections to anyone. It's as much LE as being a school crossing guard.
