Spearfishing Southern California | Hunting for Calico Bass in the Kelp Forest
The water is finally warming up and it feels good to get back out there. Once the water starts warming up, Calico Bass tend to start spawning in the kelp forest. They're a lot more active and you'll often see some decent size ones with beautiful gold coloration. Managed to land a couple along with a California Sheephead for some delicious eating.

San Diego | Tomahawk Sportfishing | My First Night Bite and I Lost My Bluefin Tuna
zhlédnutí 4,6KPřed měsícem
I went on my first 1.5 day trip aboard the Tomahawk out of Fisherman's Landing. We went out in search of the night bite for Bluefin Tuna. It was a rough start. We made four stops in total and we were able to pick out a couple each time. On the very last stop, I hooked onto a nice size one, but unfortunately it popped off. We trolled around the daytime, looking for paddies and foamers. Although ...
Catalina Island Fishing/Spearfishing | First Crossing! Calico Bass on the Surface Iron
zhlédnutí 541Před měsícem
Took my boat out to Catalina for the first time! We aimed for a spearfishing and fishing adventure. Spearfishing didn't go too well. The visibility was a lot worse then we anticipated. We lost an anchor. So, I stayed on the boat to do some fishing while my buddies dove. Caught a few bass on the surface iron for the first time. We didn't sink so I'm glad we made it there and back on my boat.
Long Beach Harbor Fishing | We Were Fishing for Spotted Bay Bass and Then This Happened…
zhlédnutí 396Před 2 měsíci
Decided to hit up a spot I don't frequent too much in Long Beach. I unfortunately was not able to land any fish. We fished hard, but it did feel slow. My buddy Brandon managed to catch a spotty on his very first cast. A couple of hours in, his fishing reel drag starts screaming. We were hoping that it was a striper or white sea bass, but a small Bat Ray was still fun.

Another day fishing in Southern California. This time, we hit up Long Beach to do some harbor fishing. I had time for a short evening session for some spotted bay bass. Managed to land some and managed to lose. Nonetheless, we did not skunk.
Fishing on the El Patron in Southern California | Catching Rockfish and Bonitos
zhlédnutí 2KPřed 3 měsíci
I got invited out to go on an overnight trip on the El Patron off of Long Beach Sportfishing. It was a great trip overall and we brought plenty of fish home. Our original plan was to fish for white sea bass, but with the rough conditions, we decided to target rockfish. We eventually changed it up and hit up different coves at San Clemente Islands for some bonito and bass. Shout out to Sosa for ...

Would you ever body board out to the reef out from Trump golf course? I wanna try but it seems tough
Haven’t thought about that. Does seem like a long paddle, but good luck if you decide to give it a try!
Good stuff Bud! Keep up the great work 🎣🤙🏼
Thanks for watching!
I fished that boat when Gillette owned it , he owes me money. The Eclipse
Damn hope you get your money back
Great video! One of my favorite fish to catch! I have never caught any from the shore. From my kayak I used a 3/4oz blue and chrome Ratteltrap on a medium heavy 7ft freshwater bass rod with a freshwater bass baitcasting reel and 10 lb mono. Once out in the La Jolla Kelp I was fishing near a 1/2 day boat. Once they started chumming I casted out that Rattletrap and gave it a steady wind back in. I ended up catching 21 bonito and 3 log barracuda. You can only keep 5 bonito. That lure had the finish completely chewed off of it! My arms were so tired I left them biting and paddled in. What a great day that was!
Thanks for watching! That sounds like a fun day
Find grass and you find bass
Yes sir!
aren't sheephead the last predators for sea urchin now that the starfish are gone?
Nah, I still see starfish on my dives. There are other animals such as lobsters, crabs, wolf eels, and sea otters along our coast that also eat sea urchins
Turn away from being a buddhist with generational curses. You are on your way to burn in hell as buddhist. Turn to jesus christ. Dont let your feelings get to you with this true message.
why kill a baracuda? Aren’t they not good to eat ?
I just caught my first ever spotty today on the Naple Island jetty. It was legal
Nice shot and bleeding! Kelp is hard to retrieve in.
Thank you!
Why is it's tongue like that?
It’s the swim bladder of the fish! It’s called barotrauma. For certain species of fish, mainly rockfish, when you reel them up from deep waters, their bodies aren’t acclimated to the pressure changes. So, their swim bladder expand like that. It doesn’t happen to all fishes though. There’s a few exceptions
@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT so once you reel it in, ot dies from that? Or is it possible to release it?
@@kylevick3390it’s possible to release it. California regulations now require a fish descending device. You pretty much clip the fish onto the device, and the clip releases or the fish shakes off once a certain depth is released
Good video. It’s not my thing, does not look like fun at all to me. I have two buddies who do this a lot and they told me “if you ever do it just make the stretch and pay for a private boat”. The way he was making it sound in the long run a private boat with maybe you and a friend is worth it in terms of funds spent vs fish caught ratio.
I've done both and I feel like sometimes it really depends. Both are pretty different and fun experiences and it all depends on what you want to target. I think there are times where the night bite is hot, and really only the sport boats have the capacity to target bluefin at night. They even have the benefit of having enough bait to maintain a good chum like to keep the fish around them. You could be paying the same amount going on a private 4-6 pack charter, but you may get more fishing time from a sport boat. There's a lot of different factors that come into play like where the fishes are and how they're biting. I think both are fun either way! It's worth a try and both are a different learning experience. I went out recently on a buddy's boat and it wasn't a great day out. We saw some 6-pack charters skunk, and its about $1,200 per person...
Hey big dog, What area you hitting ? Trying to take my son out .
Amazing!
Thank you!
What was your speed there and back? How much fuel did you use for the trip? I'm still too scare to take my 17 footer to Cat.
We averaged around 23mph! I used about about 15-18gallons (about 2/3 of my tank). I’d say we traveled around about 70 miles. It’s definitely a cool experience. It was a bit bumpier than expected, but we stayed dry for the most part. Just gotta watch the weather forecast and be mindful of the afternoon winds when you head back. We left around 4:30am and got back by around 2-3pm. Hope that helps!
@@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT Thanks for the info Jason. My fuel tank is smaller at around 20gallons, so I will have to bring along a couple of 5gallons cans. My older 2002 90hp is not as efficient.
@@alwaysfishing8465 good luck out there! Yeah I brought an extra 5 gallon jug with me too
Keep your content more wholesome or you’ll lose subs. 👎

Awesome vid. Fish is already plural. You don't need to say fishes
Thanks!
but it sounds cuter when we say fishes or fishies
@@Crenshawswettest lol that is true
My 1st thought was why does she have a beard lol nice Halibut! No calico’s?
Thanks! Not this trip. This was a few years ago when we had just started. We weren’t skilled enough to get calicos back then 😂
Great adventure, thanks for sharing. Nice to see what it looks like down there. I found a nice spot to launch my kayak and look forward to landing some of those Sheep and Calico!
Nice! Good luck out there
looks fun. imma have to try spearfishing one day!
Thanks man! It’s fun and worth the experience
Enjoyed your video.
Thanks for watching!
Very sweet video bro, I am wanting to get into spearfishing. I been heavy into kayak fishing and now have just snorkeling one time I was like I need to get out there and do some spearfishing. My only concern is my breath holds, that part does scare me a little bit. What was your time when you started and where are you at now with your holds? Any tips on gear and technique?
Thanks for watching! I’d recommend taking an FII Level 1 course or looking to clubs to meet other divers. It helps a lot and you’ll get to practice and learn dive techniques. Spearamerica is a local dive shop that could help you out on gear. For me, it really depends on the day and how comfortable I feel sometimes. When I’m hunting, I’m usually holding my breath between 40sec to 70sec. Definitely learn about shallow water blackout. Your breath hold will get better as you keep going out and get more comfortable in the water. Resting long enough in between your dives is important as well. Hope that helps and feel free to reach out if you have any other questions!
Nice video ! El patron is the best!
Yes sir! It was a great crew

What are your thoughts on the DDT dumping and potential risks
I know there are guys that have been eating fish from here for a while now and they seem to be fine. Eating too much fish can be an issue because of mercury poisoning and the Department of Fish and Wildlife post signs saying fishes are contaminated in certain areas. Either way, I really think it just comes down to eating in moderation. I don’t consume fish on a daily/weekly basis
its fucked up we lobster dive there but eat whatever if you eat mcdonalds you can eat fish swimming in a little ddt
@@rafwhy9888 27,000 barrels. I'm wondering if any way to test a sample to see if they are telling the truth about it being safe
@@teamconspiracy i wish ya bro its not a joke i do think about it too everytime i eat a lobster from there its a huge lobster ground they are def not telling us the truth
@@teamconspiracyyeah, if you think about it though, I think all that DDT was dumped between the 1940s 1960s. So it’s been a while, and there are a good amount of people that still consume fish there. But yeah, I still think it really comes down to eating in moderation and taking only what you need
Man I can't wait to go back to Cali
Hopefully we see you out there soon!
Sweet catches! How will you eat the calico and sheeps head?
Thank you! I like to pan sear or ceviche for the calico. I like beer battered Sheephead! 🤙🏻
Oh shnaps! Fun day indeed! Looking forward to the next dive. BRING OUT THE BOAT!
Thanks man!! Boat is currently out of service for some repairs at the moment 🥲
@@CatchFishNotFeelingsYT i knew it lol still a nice boat lets race
All I can say is stay away from here and spearfishing Don't let me catch you here
Okay daddy. Any particular reason why?
Don’t hate bro, I’m a local and fish crystal cove all the time
I have the same exact setup but I throw arigs with it or Id fish way bigger fish than spotties lol. That being said be careful when your casting out not to get the line caught on the hookkeeper, at 2:05 you catch and fish and it looked really difficult to reel because your line was caught on the keeper. Actually I noticed you put the line on the hookkeeper, you do it again at 4:00 cuz your pulling out line. Then you do it again lol bad habit just be careful cuz reeling in a big fish like that your gonna lose it, basically like having the line caught around one of the guides on your pole.
Thanks for the tip man! I’ll keep that in mind next time. I’ll throw some big swim baits and what not here and there with this set up. I usually pull out line like that to fix any birds nest or to let it sink faster. I feel like there’s a little disadvantage since I’m having a left retrieve with this rod. The hook keeper is in the left side so it’s more prone to get caught around it
Where is this spot if you don’t mind sharing?
I was fighting it with you bro lol We win some, we lose some…you’ll get’em next time 👊🏾
Haha thanks for watching man! We’ll get em next time 🙏🏻
Your drag is way too tight
What would you recommend? My tackle shop recommended around 20-30% of my line test. So I had 80lb line and I set the drag to about 23lbs
Sick video bro! Had a great time fishing with you🤙🏼
Thanks man! Great time fishing with you. We gotta do it again sometime
