SOLO BACKPACKING | Big Pine Creek - South Fork
End of July 2024 I finally went on another backpacking trip after a year-long hiatus. This time I explore the underrated South Fork of the Big Pine Creek, camping next to Brainard Lake and Finger Lake.
Very hot during the day and lots of mosquitoes at this time of year. In this video, I do a dangerous creek crossing (On my way back, I realized there is a much safer crossing a few yards upstream from this - not shown in the video).
Filmed with my GoPro Hero 12, GoPro Hero 8, and Google Pixel 7 Pro.
Music from epidemicsound.com
Footage at the very end is from my dad's weekly TV show that was called Dimensiones and aired in Tijuana back in the 80's.

Backpacking Yosemite's North Rim - NORTH DOME to EAGLE TOWER
zhlédnutí 1,9KPřed rokem
Back in August of 2022, I went backpacking in Yosemite with my brother. We hiked from the Yosemite Valley floor up to North Dome and then continued along the north rim toward Yosemite Falls and Eagle Tower before hiking back down to the valley. It was about 20 miles total distance. Filmed mostly with my GoPro Hero 8 and the footage from the last day going down was filmed with my phone because I...

Solo Backpacking All 7 Big Pine Lakes & Palisade Glacier

Back in September of 2021, I went solo backpacking in the John Muir Wilderness in Inyo National Forest. I hiked about 20 miles with over 5,000 ft of elevation gain, exploring all 7 Big Pine Lakes plus Summit Lake and the Palisade Glacier. The trailhead I started from is the Big Pine Creek North Fork and you need a wilderness permit for backcountry camping in this area: www.recreation.gov/permit...

MARBLE MOUNTAIN WILDERNESS | Weekend Backpacking Trip With My Brother

What I liked about this backpacking trip was that we hardly ever saw any other people there and that you don't need to reserve a permit weeks or months in advance like in some of California's more popular backpacking destinations. You just show up at the trailhead and start hiking, for free! No permit required. We started at the Lovers Camp Trailhead following Canyon Creek trail for a 17 mile l...

There are of course many more that I did not have time to visit, unfortunately. Hopefully this video inspires you to give Chiapas a chance next time you visit Mexico, ins...

I attempted this hike in July of last year and the water flow was way way too strong to cross South Fork. Everything was totally submerged. I'm glad you crossed safely. Thanks for taking us along for the journey!
LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING YOUR DAD ALWAYS FORWARD YOU EVER SINGLE DAY OF YOUR LIFE ... !! I LOST MY DAD AND MY MUM OVER COVID TIME TOO... GREAT VIDEO...!
Hey bro can you make a video on the gear you take?
Great scenery and photography. I appreciate all the extra time you take in filming while backpacking.
Amazing video man, these shots are brilliant!
This video is dedicated to my dad, who was my number one fan and my inspiration for video production.
Great video, thanks Diego! I'm heading up to Sam Mack Meadow and found this helpful.
You have fortitude and vigor amigo along with strength 💪 keep enjoying life and stay safe for God's sakes (nice video)😊
Wow that shot at :38 took my breath away ! I’m subscribing ; can’t wait to see more Yosemite and Sierra content !
Great video. It was fun watching. When you hiked to Eagle Tower did you camp at Yosemite Falls and Snow Creek Trail junction or at Eagle Peak/El Capitan Junction?
Awesome video
Great video! What size pack?
Thanks for the great video. Do you remember where you guys got water on the way? Thanks again.
My wife and I got permits to backpack here this upcoming summer. we plan to do 3 days and 2 nights. would you recommend exploring 6/7 and summit lakes Or the glacier if you could only choose one of those?
This is obviously the route to Cloudripper also. Great for 3 to 6 days out in the wild. There is a pass too.
Everytime I went it was smoke from fires except once.
It is natural to go up the Moraine overlooking the Glacier. Probably best view of area without going to Ridge/peaks. Go high as you can if not climber. Great pictures
Your photography of the trail conditions was outstanding and quite informative. Really liked your star trail shot. This is a pretty impressive 3 day accomplishment with some awesome views. Thanks for taking us along.
how were the mosquitos?
excellent video
Where is sutters mill?
Muchs gracias. Thank you 👍💥❗️🌄
Diego, show more and talk more about the area. Little too much of your face in the video. You said yourself you don't like to hear other people talk while you are camping, we are the same way.
excellent video
Hiked Big Pine a year ago and heading up in a few days. This is one of the best videos I’ve seen…simple, not over produced, just a guy sharing his hike. Great job!
agreed the best video on big pines I have come across. ill be going up in June and possibly before that in may.. looking forward to it.
Great video
It sure was 💯
wth? lol.. never seen those kind of meals... where or what are they called/get them (the pizzas).
Looks like it was raining during your entire hike? Heads up, if you haven’t been told, never do Half Dome in the rain. Thunder and *lightning* storms are no joke and a huge cause for fatalities in the Valley!
Congratulations! Thanks for taking us up Half Dome. You picked the perfect time to climb it. I’ve seen photos where it’s a solid stream of people all the way up to the top. The Half Dome ascent is a hike I have no desire to do so your video is the closest I’ll ever be. It was thrilling to watch! I really appreciate your honesty in expressing how you are feeling; your doubts, your challenges, your exhaustion, your elation. This can save lives as anyone watching this video and wanting to hike it too will be better prepared for the challenges and not go out in the wilderness thinking it’s a walk in the park. I love your Google Earth projection of the trail. For me, the only thing I would change is to not have human music during the hike. I don’t mind it at the beginning during the preview or during the drive to and from the trailhead but during the hike itself, I want to hear Nature’s music; the bird song, water cascading, the wind through the trees, the crunch of boots on the trail, even the buzz of mosquitoes! Nature doesn’t need any ‘improvements’. I usually pass by CZcams channels that play music during the hike but I love your work so much that I decided to subscribed. I did my first solo backpack trip this year (I’m a 69 yo woman) It was awesome. Had two more trips planned but Hurricane Hilary came in the day before I was to leave my base camp. Lucky I didn’t get caught up in the high passes. Will do them another time. Thanks for another great hiking adventure.
Do you need a permit? If so how can I get it?
It seems to me you are taking risks ( as a solo hiker with no one to help you) that could cause you bodily harm..When you are solo you should not ever go beyond your comfort/skill level. As a solo hiker, from what I've seen, and with no visible means of getting help if you become injured and physically immobile YOU WILL DIE you need a Garmin mini or any type of sat com emergency unit
Even the most seasoned hikers carry them
where was your campsite location at Clark Lakes?
Fellow San Diegan here! I just back country camped solo for the first time in Yosemite (at Sunrise lakes) this week! It was a challenge and a confidence booster for me to feel comfortable solo backpacking in the future. I filmed my trip and will be editing it over the next week or so and eventually posting it on CZcams. Your video was very inspiring and well done! I’ll definitely check out your other videos.
Thank you for taking us on that journey!
My pleasure!
Love your videos! Thank you for taking us on your journeys!
My pleasure! Thanks! 🙏🏼
Thank you for sharing. I would have never known this place existed if it wasn't for your video. I will be in that area next week. Even though I am not fit enough to make it all the way to the Glacier, I can surely experience some of that magnificent trail....and I will!
Awesome! Enjoy the trail! 👍🏼
@@diegogomezcana We were there 2 weeks ago. We spent a week in Mammoth lakes acclimatizing to the altitude with shorter hikes. We did a day hike to the 2nd lake. Absolutely gorgeous lakes, scenery, and wildflowers along the way. The last 2 miles on the return trip were challenging on the joints. We will head back to the area to hit a few other hikes we missed. Again, thanks for sharing the video and allowing us to discover the Sierra Nevadas!
Wow, you did a great job with this video. That was a nice campsite at Gem Lake.
Thank you! 🙏🏼
What was the weather like on north dome? preparing for an overnight in august 👍🏼
We went early August and during the evening it dropped down to the 50's. It can be pretty hot during the day... 80's... even in the 90's. The day we went up North Dome it was cloudy all day with non-stop rain all morning. The following day was sunny all day. Hope this helps 👍🏼
Nice job, well done. Kudos on actually camping at Clouds. And to almost have to have the park to yourself, during the pandemic. Very special and historic. My first 7 day solo in the Rockies is in my heart today. Love having Yosemite so close (four hours) from me in Northern California. Was there in January 2023 between snowstorms. ☮
Yes, it was very special. Thanks! 7 days in the Rockies sounds amazing. I'll have to plan a trip over there
I'm doing a 4 day in Yosemite in September and found your vid while looking up hikes. Really enjoyed the ride. Thanks for getting me stoked for my trip! Commentary was honest and great. I really appreciated that. I'll be starting a workout for mine a couple months in advance. I'm not doing half dome, but I'll be doing some gnarly climbs. You convinced me I should train for it haha. Still cant decide if I"m going solo or with a buddy. After watching your vid, I'm leaning more towards solo. Looking forward to more content! Greetings from SF.
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy your trip in Yosemite! Training a couple of months will definitely make things easier and more enjoyable 👍🏼
I went off course in JT too man…. I was there beginning of March and we had some snow on the ground- editing is so time consuming for sure!
I wanna check out JT when it has snow sometime

Thank you so much 😅
My pleasure 😌
Good shit dude!! Beasted those trails!! Keep the vids coming!!
Thanks! Will do!
Wow! Just wow! I watched your first solo trip video a couple of hours ago, then this one popped up. I commented in your other video about my plan to hike Half Dome this summer, then I want to do North Dome but I plan to start at the Porcupine Trailhead off hwy 120. It will be an overnight out-and-back. There's no way I can start at the Snow Creek trail, I don't have the wind for that. I got a little nervous for you guys when you started off for Eagle Peak around sunset since there's no trail, worried you'd not be able to find your way back to camp, but it looks like you made it. You've now seen the views from both rims and they're all spectacular views!
Yeah, it got completely dark on us on our way back from Eagle Tower, but luckily we had our headlamps and I'm pretty decent at navigation, even in the dark. The views definitely are spectacular! Enjoy them from North Dome! I hope you get an awesome sunset as we did up there!
What an epic journey! And your camera footage was superb! Loved how you captured each segment of the hike, including your campsites. I loved the starry night sky you got on Clouds Rest. I could feel your exhaustion when you did Half Dome. I did it as a day hike and almost gave up halfway up the sub dome, but I persevered, then had to rush back down to the Valley before dark fell because I had no headlamp or jacket. I made it back to camp at 8:15 pm, just as the sunlight disappeared. I'm doing the hike again this summer (2023) but I'm hiking down from the Panorama Trail, spending the night in LYV, hiking Half Dome the next day, coming back to LYV to spend a second night, then hike back down to the Valley. Better than a one day death march😂
Haha yeah I've also done it in one day and definitely prefer to do it as part of a backpacking trip. Camping in LYV is the way to go! That way you can get to Half Dome before all the day hikers and enjoy it more. Enjoy your trip to Yosemite and thanks for watching!
