TJ's Trains. Menards mysterious lighted hopper unit train featuring the Lionel Phantom.
I ordered the dealer 4 pack of Menards lighted hopper cars as soon as they were announced. I knew they had to be powered by a special locomotive and what better horse than the original Lionel Phantom?
Realistic? Naw.
Fun? I hope so!
The sounds are all genuine Phantom captured in real time.
Thanks for watching!

Today we see 6 Lionel postwar sets in about 6 minutes. We start with the 1957 set #2296W led by the 2373 Canadian Pacific AA F3 diesels. This is the only year the CP F3s were offered making them hard to find. My set additionally includes the 2 separate sale 2553 and 2554 passenger cars. I know, the CP diesels look a little strange with the palm trees in the opening scene! Following is the 1958 ...

I built a simulated steam powered machine shop from Erector parts. It is based on real machine shops from the early 1900s and is of my own design. The machines include a band saw, stamping press, table saw, drill press, and hack saw. Whoever left that giant screw on the floor near the drill press (best seen at 1:24) lost their restroom privileges for the week.

After several years of building and operating my high rail layout, I got the urge to take a step back in time and build a Lionel postwar layout reminiscent of the display layouts of the '50s. It features the Lionel postwar sets I have acquir...

Whoa! Cool Terry!
Thank you!
Have you thought about a video featuring only your Phantom locomotive and passenger cars?
Good production! I followed the link from the O Gauge Forum but was not expecting this. Nicely done.
LOL, thanks John, I appreciate it!
Wow thats neat !
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Good fun!! Thanks, I enjoyed that......
Thank you!
Neat Terry. Are these hoppers your first Menards products?
Thanks Hunter, yes these are my first Menards cars.
Great! 👍👍
Thanks always for your nice comments!
TJ never disappoints! Those mysterious glowing hoppers wouldn''t be half as exciting without his clever and creative special effects. Well done my friend!
Thank you sir!
Cool smoke effects. Those hoppers really mysteriously light up!
Wow you get the first comment award (a special thank you). I appreciate it!
@@isellu Welcome back Terry! Nice job with the video

Very nice, but those F7 sets never came with the B units.
Actually Lionel called them F-3s and you are correct in that the B units didn't come in the sets. They were available as a separate sale in the same catalogs however and the 65 year old boy in me decided to buy and run those in these sets. I stand corrected though as they really are not part of the set. Thanks for the info!
@@isellu oops my bad, I knew that. I stand corrected. I have one B unit that came with my Wabash F3. It irks me when sellers think a B unit or Dummy A is worth the price if the pair. I have some Alco Bs but probably never have an F3 B,
If you had it all now and had it all working now you would still be the king of model railroading. I liked the sound effects too.
Thanks for watching!
I wish my videos looked as clean and polished like yours. I’m also a really big postwar fanatic. Ive been on the hunt for one of those Canadian Pacific F3 units. I have the passenger cars but I don’t have the locomotives
TJ You have an incredible layout! Absolutely amazing!👍
Thank you, I really appreciate it!
Awesome layout! Do you happen to have a layout plan you would care to share? Thanks!
Thank you, I appreciate your comment! Here is a CZcams link to the layout diagram. It doesn't show any specifications of track but it should give you an overall impression of the layout design. czcams.com/video/6c7qn9TBLTA/video.html
Great Video! I like the way you show the catalog, then show the sets in the catalog running. Thanks for posting.
Thank you John, I appreciate your nice comments!
Love the video and layout! By the way, was that the Santa Fe NW-2 making all that dinging? I kept looking around wondering if I was imagining it.
Absolutely! The Lionel 6220 released in 1949 was the first locomotive to feature Magne-Traction. As you noticed it also has a gear driven mechanical bell on the front truck. It cannot be turned off but I love the sound. Thanks for noticing and watching!
Terry do you find it a hassle to hard wire Gargraves switches?
I use Gargraves track but Ross Custom switches. All but one of the switches are powered by under-the-table NJ international dual coil switch machines and they were easy to wire.
Merry Christmas Terry.
Thank you Hunter same to you. I hope you have a happy and healthy Christmas!

So I’ve been interested in the old postwar era for a while. I knew of them, but didn’t really have any experience with them. Then I found this video a while ago, and really started to love them And as of a month ago, I caved in, I’m now the proud owner of a 2055 Hudson! My absolute favorite model in my collection of mostly HO, and this old beast is definitely what’s gonna get me more into O gauge haha Just wanted to share this fun little story, I think it’s fun and I adore the Hudson SO much!
Excellent! I started with O gauge as a kid then transitioned to N scale, HO and finally back to O gauge. All of the scales have their pros and cons but it is really hard to beat the "beast" quality (in your words) of the big, noisy and oily postwar Lionel trains. Thanks for watching and sharing your neat story!
Canadian Pacific set is worth a fortune.
Yeah, ironically one of the least popular Lionel F3 locomotives in the mid to late '50s was this one which has now become the most sought after. Thanks for watching!
Grew up in the 50's. My dad and I built a layout. Began collecting again 5 years ago- had everything stolen but have bought a few pieces just for display.@@isellu

Did you make the palm trees Terry?
Hi Hunter, no I wish I could make those. They are from an architectural supply place. I think they use turkey feathers. Take care!
Very ice. I like running the old Lionel on a highly detailed layout.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Judging from your AC cap Terry, are you an Allis Chalmers fan?
Yes, AC is my favorite farm tractor brand.

No, but the Menards look like they are nice buildings.
Happy 4th of July Terry.

Wow! Terry you got a nice collection of Lionel F3s. I just recently got my hands on the Lionel PWC B&O Freight set from 2006 and as a bonus the 1990s era reissue of the 700e scale Hudson 5340. The number of F3s I got is quite a lot I have the Texas Special PWC, Western Pacific PWC, Wabash PWC, Southern PWC, New York Central Century Club 1, B&O PWC, and original Lionel 2343 Santa Fe F3 with 2 A units and 1 B unit, another Santa Fe F3 set with 2 As and 2 B units from 2001 or 2000, and finally a Lionel Archive Southern Pacific Black Widow F3 from 2000. I’m going be on the look out for the Canadian Pacific F3 Postwar Celebration Series version with the passenger cars, the Rio Grande F3 also PWC, Atlantic Coast Line F3, Milwaukee Road, C&O, and others.
Wow to you also! It sounds like you have a variety of nice really nice horses in your stable too. I really like the SP Black Widow paint scheme and your re-pop of the 700e is a gem. Thanks for watching and enjoy your trains! TJ
Thanks dude. I’m going to the LCCA’s Concord Convention in July. I’m bringing my B&O Set with some freight cars and my 1990 700e Hudson with either Lionel Madison cars or New York Central 15’ in passenger cars with the 700 series NYC Woodsided Caboose.
Any layout that has post war Lionel trains catches my attention. The heart and soul of toy trains catches my interest every time. What ever layout theme it is always a hit with me when post war Lionel is running around it. Those classic toy trains are just what interest me most given the wide spectrum of trains on you tube video.
Terry you got a decent ERTL collection. How come you didn’t get one of those ROW flat cars? They seem right up your alley.
Terry did you happen to order anything from the 2023 Lionel catalog? I haven’t. Also, do you still have that scratch built turn table from your old layout?
Hi Hunter, no, I haven't ordered anything from the new catalog. The turntable you are thinking of is basically the same as the one on this layout. The roundhouse and the turntable bridge are the same. The under table drive is a little different. It's really not long enough for most of larger locos so it has become more of a scenery item. Take care!
@@isellu it was neat how you wired a light knob to activate it.
I like my Williams locomotive for conventional operation. They are simple and easy to maintain. If the board goes out you can live without it just put some rectifiers in line so you can run it. Do Fridays fancy electronic control systems have any lifespan to them at all. Of course I don't have a club size d layout. It used to take five or six people to run a great big layout like they show on these videos now everybody runs them by computer with remote control. That was part of the fun of having an operating session. For some people who did not have room for a layout at home especially with 0 scale to rail DC powered locomotive having access to a club layout would probably be the only way you could run your very expensive 0 scale locomotive. I have old issues of Model Railroader from the 1940s and 1950s and they have ads in there for people who will convert your 3-rail Lionel Hudson over too 2 rail d.c. I like the Mike's train house Premiere locomotives that you could order with scale wheels and scale couplers and have a switch so you could run it off either three rail or two rail. Not that I could afford those type of expensive engines. I would rather have to Conventional controlled engines that last forever compared to an engine with all the bells and whistles that last hardly at all. The noise becomes cacophonous after a while and all the smoke makes your train room look like a scene from Cheech and Chong. Like vintage motorcycles simple last forever.
Yeah, I have plenty of MTH Premier locomotives but I only run them by conventional control and you are right; our old Lionel beasts will outlast the newer ones by far. Thanks for watching Frank!
@@isellu didn’t you have a Williams Canadian Pacific FM train master once Terry?
@@huntercoleman460 Yes Hunter, it now is stationed at my roundhouse and is under repair by the engine facility crew. It has the doors and part of the roof opened up with a crane pulling out a component. It has been painted primer gray. You can see it at 6:50 in this video.
Postwar Lionel trains are the safe money They will run and run with little repair cost Guys who bought Lionel tmcc or oddy jerk engines 15-20 years ago have lost 500.00 to 600.00 per engine and are hard to sell There are no boards available to repair this asian garbage So that 2500.00 big boy comming out this year will be worth maybe 1250.00 and no parts to fix these pretty cheap ass trains from China All that smoke you see is your money blowing out the stack The postwar genius-quality stuff will double in the next 15-20 years Watch the video again and see magic Try and fix a Scale MTH QSI proto 1 engine you can't they are worth 30 cents on the dollar Post War Trains are Hotter than ever Young fathers can buy Postwar trains in good condition without boxs for almost nothing They run forever and are cheap to fix The best part is your Boy will be a real Boy not a transgender Woke Liberal Freak Show LONGLIVE THICK CHROME ,STRAIGHT WOMEN AND POSTAR LIONEL TRAINS MY2CENTS

When my father had his humongous Lionel layout in the basement of the house in New York, he bought the Bosco milk car accessory because he knew I loved Bosco for making chocolate milk. I would have something like that on my hi-rail layout for nostalgic sake. If I remember right the milk cans were chocolate brown. The accessories nowadays the old ones if they work command sky-high collector prices and the chinese-made reissues even if they work quieter and better than the originals are still ridiculously expensive. Too much for my blood.
The accessories added good play value for a child. But as an adult hi railer they are noisy and leave much to be desired for scenery purposes. I just like to fire up the train and let them run. Did not do the switching in HO scale sure don't do it in Tri-Rail because switches are expensive just like in the old days. Kids would ask each other how many switches you had. For changing routes Maybe but let's face it we are not going to be setting out cars and picking up cars at Industries. I did not want to emulate the real thing to that extent. Too much like work. I just want to have fun with my trains.
Yeah, there are several ways to enjoy the hobby but I like to run them as well instead of realistic operation. Thanks for watching!
