Gobabis (Namibia) Olifant Rally 2024
After a fair ride all the way from South Africa, Kyle attended the Olifant Rally, hosted by the Gobabis Motorcycle Club of Namibia.
A lot of fun was had and many great people met, as well as memories made all at the same time.
If you are looking for a really family fueled and tightknit biking community vibe, then the long trip is definitely worth it!

Despite the hefty 500kg dry weight of the Goldwing, you just can't help falling in love with the effortless ride you get out of Honda's long standing flagship model. 1800cc flat 6, producing an incredible 173nm of torque, delivered through a 7 speed DCT gearbox. Price = R 536 000 (Honda South Africa listed price)

    What's the hp on the new 2023 models? Supposedly, the CB500f is at 50hp, but I can't corroborate that fact on Honda's website for any of the 500 models. Also, how does the 500x perform on highways? I've read reviews that it gets buzzy at higher speeds.

    • @southafricamotorcyclist
      @southafricamotorcyclist Pƙed 22 dny

      According to Honda SA, it's 35kw @ 8500rpm. As for highway riding, it handled extremely well for a 500. Keep in mind that it's screaming at 140km/h, but that's what one would expect from a 500 parallel twin. And even with it screaming like that, you still have enough "go" to jump up to 180km/h without to much difficulty. Considering it's size and weight as well, the highway was not a problem at all!

      This is a difficult one to answer. Every bike is going to have different things happen at different times, depending on the rider, road conditions etc. A simple filter and oil change service (with the full checklist from a Motorrad technician), should set you back around ZAR 2000-2500.

However, there is a fix, at a very reasonable price. Clearview Shields (Fort Collins, Colorado). Multiple heights, widths, and curvature to redirect wind. Impressive design and material, and a great price. They brought their 36 years of experience. Number two is the stock seat. Very stiff. I upgraded to the Day Rider seat offered by BMW, but made by Mustang. There are other BMW (Mustang) seats offering even more padding.

Its just a combination of things - The 44 teeth guys excluding the Suzuki from their superbike group test (but I had already bought my BMW by then). Your own description of the bikes brakes. Just in general nobody going wow about the GSXR. Lets face it most bike dealers in Ireland will not allow test rides on new bikes so I have to decide on you tube videos. I still like Suzuki as a brand - had a brand new bandit 600 in 2000 which was nice. Not too keen on the new S logo though - I preferred seeing "SUZUKI" on the petrol tanks. Thinking of a used GSXR as a track bike though.

      @@Lar308 the thing when it comes to the Japanese superbikes is that although there isn't that "WOW" factor in many of them, they tend to be extremely reliable and predictable to ride. Not too say there is anything wrong with the S1000RR at all, but it comes to personal preference and obviously cost as well. Power for power, the GSX-R is right up there, and the electronics underneath are just as good as any newly released bike out there. Seriously worth a ride if you can, especially considering that it is currently the cheapest superbike on the market currently, all because it doesn't have the pretty color screen and rather relies on a more track inspired display showing only essential data. Hi, very nice review of a really excellent bike, in my opinion anyway. I would like to find out. You said that you are a shorty. I'm 1.62m and I'm considering to upgrade to the VStrom. I'm currently on a 2012 BMW F650GS ( 800cc Parallel Twin) and on the BMW I'm pretty much tippy toe when I don't shift my bum to the one side. When I do I can reasonably almost flat foot one foot. How did you find the bike at slow speeds? I know Suzuki has the lower seat option available but would like to know what's your thoughts. I know the bike is also relatively heavy at 247kg if I remember correctly. Did it feel top heavy? I generally feel more comfortable and have more confidence when I can put two feet on the ground. Biggest fear is always dropping it.

    • @southafricamotorcyclist

      Hi Freddie, I'm 1.68m, and this bike was easier height wise than a 1200GS. I didn't find it heavy, but in motion most bikes are super light. Moving the bike around in a garage or driveway wasn't hard either. From my perspective, this is a very easy bike, even in traffic.
