An amazing historical video, thank you for sharing it with us. Even in 2024 it’s a timeless story.
3:38 Transportation Research Center is in Ohio, on 33, near Honda Manufacturing in Logan County. I pass it every day on my commute..the cars that have run that track...❤
Lets get this right. The phase 4 was a 4 bolt bottom end. Nothing like phase 3 in the block other 4inch bore
Ron Rodson had one he rallied
It’s a funking nascar bro
wow
There is no way I'd have one of these over a 911 GT3 or an R8. Pricing of these new Corvettes here in Australia is absolutely ridiculous
408 km/h 😮
that car is now worth a zillion dollars lol
Blood Great Year 1972...Com'on Now!
Technically the C4 TT was the first mass produced Hypercar.
I'd personally like them to re-run this nowadays to see what it goes. Because if the Tuatara can claim 331 mph, and get away w/ it, then this could easily in '88.
There is only ONE Phase 4 and it is Green. These red cars are XA GT's that had Race car parts fitted. They were delivered as XA GT's from the factory. They don't say GTHO on the spec plate. Thats like saying every XA GT Racecar is a Phase 4..
orsm
It may not handle like a Koenigsegg, but it's still dang well up there with the top-end supercars, and that alone is nuts.
I met Ernest once on the line tour and he let me start a new Corvette. Very nice guy! Love my 95 6 speed 😊
Most of the extracors from product engineering were cut and buried at Corio tip ,and a very large box of engine components went the same way
I have a TT Vett that Jhon built me and it’s been over 200mph a lot ! It’s the Trans. That gets smoked I’ve had 10 of them in my car . Never had a problem with tires
20 miles per gallon too
I wonder where the 3 Apollo 12 Corvettes are today. Imagine how much they're worth!
when is it gonna be for sale or has it already?
I heard dealers are currently contacting existing C8 owners offering their allocation.
@@akvette what does that mean in simple terms

I worked at Callaway at the time. and was there at the shop watching this project come together. I'v driven' this car many times.. But as production manager, I still had to keep the shop producing our regular B2K models, so I couldn't go to the Ohio test track.
Nice hearing from you Gary. I bet you have some great stories from back then.
I was friends with Jhon what a great guy. I still have my TT Vett he hooked me up with.
LT4 the best
Most the phase4 motor stuff ended up in F100,s so it turns out as heavy duty truck engines
This is a great video and it’s awesome that John Lingenfelter was driving it. Well done fellas!!
Jhon was a great guy he hooked my up with my TT Vett that I still have . Rip kind sir .
Paul C, a champion bloke.
Today there’s suvs that are faster 😂😂
" ian luff kid in a candy store !" Laugh 😃 😀 😄 😁 🤣 😂 😃 😀 😄
RIP Reeves Callaway!
Still enjoying my '94 6spd Polo Green Coupe! In fact, going to polish it this weekend to get her ready for the 70 YEARS OF CORVETTE | AMERICAN CRUISE-IN at the Peterson Automotive Museum July 30th! Imagine, built by people, not robots!
R.I.P. Reeves Callaway.
2023/07/11 RIP Reeves Callaway.
Rest in peace 😢
Reeves Callaway passed away on July 11, 2023, at the age of 75.
Sledgehammer 😊
i worked on one of those cars while doing my apprenticeship.
This for sure is one of the most unique cars of the 80s!
I saved a numbers matching 1989 C4 from being parted out. The guy had blown the head gaskets out by running it hot after a coolant line broke and he took the motor out and took it apart thinking he could fix it...He couldn't. He sold some things but when I got to it the main things were still there. block, heads, transmission all disassembled. I got it all put back together with new bearings, rings and gaskets and a lot of missing parts bought all over the place. It only has 103,000 miles on it and its running good...!! Save the C4's....!!!
What they do not tell you is that the car had an engineering mistake built in. In order to better understand the MISTAKE one needs to look at the Phase Three Falcon which had been set up via Head Mod Engineering in Doncaster. The man responsible was John Bennett who established a proper tune spec for that car via proper installation engineering of the Cleveland engine into a Falcon. That engine dictated that there be a specific design of radiator, being the top bottom tank radiator. The package worked. In the XA model Ford chose to eliminate the top bottom tank radiator in favor of a crossflow radiator which was against the instructions from the US mother company. The crossflow radiator does not have the expansion room built in to cater for the clevelands thermostat design and unique coolant passage design. As such the XA, XB, XC, XD and XE falcons fitted with that engine suffered head gasket problems. The problem can be rectified but the current mind set in the industry needs to accept that there ego needs to be pacified.
Head gasket problems?
As with all GT's @ least from XY on. They incorporated a restrictor plate (I believe it was similar to a decomp plate) that sat with head gasket to reduce comp ratio. The ratio was 12:1, once removed! I know this as when I owned my 71' R/T E38 trackpack Charger back in 86'. My best mate worked as a TA mechanic for a guy who had owned a British racing green XY GT. He would regularly race a Ducati up to 140mph where they'd peter out. This was a street GT, not HO! He told my mate the story concerning the car.
The car that beat the McLaren F1 and the Veyron before they even existed.
They just start making R-Hand drives?
I was 21 years old in 1988, I miss my youth, and I miss the 80's. Fast forward to 1997, I was working at Dinan BMW, and a customer had one of these Callaway Corvettes as a second car in the shop for dyno tuning, a beast of a car, but the clutch was so stiff, it was not friendly to casually drive, love this video, thank you
Tried to order one, but no luck. Even the older C8 is hard to get.
Holy cats on the rooftop that sounds awful. The center exhaust C8 Z06 sounds totally different. Hope Australian authorities are OK with aftermarket exhaust systems.
Aun tengo la revista con la portada de este auto genial y sus récords.. gracias por los recuerdos.
I still like the Charger more , great times in Australia.
Welp those regulations seemed to have ruined the sound. So sad.
I was unaware that John Lingenfelter drove the Top Gun Vette to it’s top speed. that further enhances in my mind, the reputation of this gentleman who could hot shoe the hell out of anything he drove and build the crap out of anything he wanted. Rest in peace, John. You are a legend.
" rare as hens teeth !" " the dentist still has the phase 4 !" Laugh 😃 😀 😄 😁 🤣
