Using a Digital Collage as a Reference for my Art
There are so many ways to paint or draw from a photo reference. Here is a very quick and cursory look into how I use the computer, as a tool, to bring different elements together. The photo reference is an integral part of the process. It is manipulated, teased and changed to suit the story I want to tell.

    Curious why you started with black pastel instead of charcoal. Especially at the beginning I would think that willow charcoal would be excellent since it’s so malleable. Regardless, love the tutorial. Thanks!

    While I like the sets of Conté Crayon, once a particular color is used, it might be hard to replace-my favorite is the Ultramarine color which is actually a medium to light similar to periwinkle. I cannot find it even when some resources sell individual sticks. Do you have problems replacing certain colors? if so, how do you deal with it? Wonderful drawing demo. I like the Conté because it works so well like and with charcoal.

    Thank you for the lesson. Just what I needed. Especially something 'simple' like how to hold and make marks with the pastel sticks is something you wouldn't know if you don't have a life teacher to hand. Also I got a much better insight into the nature of using the 'fat' sticks due to your commentary. The restrictive nature of it leading to freedom. Yes, thank you. You're a very good teacher.

I was wondering how you manage to achieve the illusion of transparency of hands and faces when you paint them on top of each other?! does it matter how long you leave the oil painting to dry before putting varnish on?

    • @ScottHutchisonart
      @ScottHutchisonart Před 4 lety

      It is recommended in the artist's handbook by Ralph Mayer (good book) to wait 6 months to 1 year. However, Gamblin (The product I used in the video) mentions it's okay to varnish once the paint film in the thickest areas are firm and dry to the touch. It's a difficult question to answer because the of variety of mediums people may or may not use will effect the drying time. If you wait 6 months to a year, your safe. Hope that helps!
