Long Sling vs. Short Sling (Long Range Slinging!) Rock Sling, Shepherd's Sling
Balearic slings (Long range slinging into ocean).
In this video my buddy and I are having fun with our two very different slings.
They're both custom made by us and have their own purpose.
My buddy's sling is very long with a very thick leather pouch. On one end of the sling is a handle to grab onto and on the other end is a plastic ball to hold and release. It's a pretty unique design but it has it's pros and cons:
It's better than an average sling for slinging heavier projectiles by using a simple throw technique with no build up since the pouch is pretty heavy and the cords very long. The release ball can be dangerous as it comes back at you after a throw and the ball also makes some extra resistance leading to a bit longer release time (It's better to just tie a knot on the paracord in my opinion).
The other sling design is mine, it's much shorter and the pouch is made out of a ratchet strap that I sewed together with the cords. The idea was to make it as light as possible while still being very strong. It's great for the ''helicopter'' technique as it doesn't put as much stress on your shoulder due to the light weight. The sling is about average long so it should be better for target shooting but not as good for long range.
We're slinging against the wind in the video using stones as projectiles so the range we're getting is definitely not the best but since we were just having fun it doesn't matter that much.
Hope you enjoyed the video!

Balearic rock sling vs Shepherd's staff sling at 70m/230ft and 100m/330ft. In this video we make 5 shots each at the target (which is an old church roof) to find out who's the better man! Love watching this, a great idea for a competition game maybe! And for anyone reading this after watching and is thinking "dang, slings are awful weapons!", there are tons of slingers out there that could easily hit this sized target at that distance every throw, but for the average joe who practices maybe once a month, it is not the best primary weapon choice 😉 It'll require an hour atleast of practice every week for about 6 months before this becomes an easy target. Or just practice everyday for an hour, for about a month or so and it'll progress pretty fast.

    • @minvonadventures
      @minvonadventures Před 3 měsíci

      Well said! This target might seem pretty easy to hit from that distance but it sure takes practice! Being consistant means a lot when it comes to being a good slinger but an hour a week is a good start👌🏼

      Well that depends on what you want to use it for. This staff sling is the perfect size for what it's meant for, and it's meant to fit in my backpack and sling medium sized projectiles:) However if your goal is to sling a 3 pound stone you might want to go with a longer staff and shorter cords.

      @@minvonadventures Thanks, mine is about 5’ .

  • @peterreece6547
    @peterreece6547 Před 11 měsíci

    If you shorten the length of the sling on the staff sling you may find the stone travels further than with the long sling. Your staff is about the right length but on mine the sling is about 14” to 16” and I use a more over head swing and not a side swing as you are doing. Happy slinging.

    • @minvonadventures
      @minvonadventures Před 10 měsíci

      That might be true, but it really depends. Longer cords mean more leverage and more leverage means more distance but at some point the cords become too long to sling properly since air resistance also increases, but heavier projectiles will fight that resistance more easily so when using a longer sling it's good to use a bit heavier projectiles as well, but that also means more stress on your arms. So to get the maximum distance out of your sling you'll need to find the sweet spot which is not that hard with a regular sling but can be quite challenging with a staff sling where you have both the staff and the sling to adjust in length. At the end of the day I think it really varies from person to person what length suits the best since people have different strengths, techniques, arm length and so on. The staff sling is not so simple when you start to think about the perfect size..

    • @minvonadventures
      @minvonadventures Před 10 měsíci

      Also, the staff sling was never meant for long distance slinging, it was used for slinging heavy stones over castle walls or into an army of soldiers for example.

      @@minvonadventures The historian Bede tells about Arabs in Palestine (circa 1900) that would hit birds at 100 m as often as not. Marksmanship is partly practice, partly motivation. Focusing on a nail-head in the middle of that roof would likely increase your hits. Close-range work with a sling gets interesting, because of parallax. The stone is launching from a point 1 meter +/- to the side of your eye. But at long range, this is minimal. Ask any soldier who has tried to shoot the head off a small snake at 2 meters with a bullpup rifle. The sights are nearly useless. As Hugh Latimer, the 16th-century English archbishop, declared regarding archery-- men will never learn to shoot well unless they are brought up to it. If boys are taught that their future depends on their ability to feed and defend their families with the sling, and they are coached and motivated in their youth, the skill will be learned early and well.

      @@minvonadventures Great. Perhaps setting temporary 'buoys' in the water offshore at say 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000 feet from shoreline would help. All that would take would be 6 large soap or plastic jug containers, para-cord, and rock anchor? But then I don't know if your shoreline has a big drop off that close .... its an idea anyway. Same thing could be done on the ground along a fence row ... but stones might be hard to locate or see... and I assume no one wants to be out there when the stones are coming their way... Ha

      @@michaelpcooksey5096 That sounds like a good idea using buoys but they might be hard to position well. I was thinking more of a ground measurement, I could throw at a straight road (we have a lot of roads that are either not in use or have very few cars a day) using a painted stone (to find the rough impact location) and have the stone powder coated to leave mark on impact (make stone wet then dip it in some kinda paint powder). I mean it could work. I could also find a very big target that makes a loud noise on impact and walk 10 steps away from it until I eventually can't hit it (no impact noise will be heard). But that would still require some great accuracy I think. I could also buy a tracker, attach it to the stone and throw at a field where the stone isn't going to bounce after impact (at least very little).

      @@michaelpcooksey5096 I think slinging rocks up to 1000 feet is very achievable, just needs a great type of stone and some serious throwing strength! However, slinging metal projectiles 1000ft should be fairly easy (using biconical shaped lead projectile for example).

      @minvonadventures Před rokem

      Hi, since he's slinging down the mountain the stones were easily going 100-200m/300-600ft. They can go much farther than that but that requires more power into the swing which we were not using at that time. On even surface it can be achieved to reach well over 300m/1000ft but will require some skill as well as metal projectiles.

      Neighborhoods like these are growing everywhere around the capital region now but there are also a lot of old money neighborhoods like you call them, especially around downtown Reykjavík where the price is usually highest.

      A staff sling might not be the best option when it comes to hunting or shooting targets since it's designed to throw quite heavy projectiles unlike the normal sling (hand sling) which you would rather go for when accuracy is needed. In the old days the staff sling was meant for slinging larger stones over castle walls or into crowded areas during invasion for example. But don't get me wrong, you can be quite accurate with a staff sling if you use shorter cords and practice for awhile!

      Hi there, funny you should mention it as I have been searching for years for another pair of those in the same color and material. I bought them years ago in a store here in Iceland that unfortunately is now closed and these have been my all time best outdoor/hiking pants since they're light, stretchable and very durable due to high polyester. The inside tag is long gone so I don't even know the brand but I guess I'll just keep my eyes open;) You can try to order some online but in my experience you NEVER get what you were hoping for.
