Dog ACL / CCL Injury: A Non-surgical Approach

Old tiggerpoz site is gone but here's an archived version: web.archive.org/web/20220208071026/tiggerpoz.com/index.html My dog ruptured her ACL in March 2016 and I opted for conservative management as opposed to surgery. I took video of her over the course of one year and documented her progress in a journal. The best source of information I found online was from www.tiggerpoz.com/ A good video ...

    My 17 months old Boston terrier is doing the exact same thing. ...back Left leg... she holds it up a lot. Vet says it is a small acl tear. I ordered her drops on tv. A months ago. Not helped much. I give her baby coated asa daily. Try to keep her from running. She’s not been to active for 3 months now. She is so young to look sad & lethargic. What do u think about a leg brace. Vet did not suggest that

  • @systemtradingacademy7662

    Did you give her any pain meds? My male 3.5 year old dog (native indian pariah dog) is currently going through this. We started seeing lameness in december 2023, and we diagnosed it as ccl partial tear in 2024 june, since then i have been keeping him on rest and giving him glucosamine + fish oil supplements and not taking him out that much. Inside home he walks around but not as much as before. How did you manage the pain? There were two occasions where he couldn't get up at all and i had to use a towel to pull him up and he'd squeal in pain which is when i used strong pain killer tablets/injections for easing his pain, otherwise not giving him NSAIDs.

    Yes this may work and be walking normal again but then what happens 6 months later when the same thing happens again because it can then you will need surgery only way to keep it from happening over and over. Surgery is very invasive and expensive. But once the recovery is over in about 12 weeks then you don't have to ever worry about tearing the ligament again there is none

    Hi there, the same thing happened to my dog. The general practitioner suspects CCL. How has your dog been doing after 1 year? Does she eventually stop limping? Does she seem to be in pain?

    Thank you so much, I spent a bunch at the vet on those anti inflammatories & they pushed surgery which we absolutely don’t have the money for. Our dogs name is George & his a black lab/border collie mix. He’s been limping for a few months now & he’s around 8 years old. this gives me hope that we can help him, & i’ll walk him on short walks like you did because i’ve been afraid to take him on walks since he’s limping. you’ve helped me so much

    • @stevestrike6867
      @stevestrike6867 Před 2 měsíci

      If I recall, around 8 weeks but someone left a comment that their dog took 12 weeks before it was stable enough to begin light walks again. I never found out exactly what the popping is, probably some joint noise as it is not supported properly by the torn ligament.

    the knee is unstable, they make leg braces for dogs that greatly assist in their mobility, if the knee is stable it will heal faster since I read Canines can actually recover from knee injuries without surgery but yes it requires them to rest as much as possible on the affected limb. The big reason to get a knee brace is that it lowers the risk of the dog injuring the other leg because now it has to share the load for both legs as the dog moves around.

    I declined my vets strong advice to have £3.5 k surgical repair of my 42kilo old tyme bulldogs ACL rupture even though he said she may not walk again because I did some research (im a doctor with 40 years experience) and found no evidence that it was any better than resting and gentle reintroduction of exercise. Sure enough after about eight weeks, she was running around again, almost like normal . a few months later, she ruptured her other cruciate ligament which is not uncommon. This one took a little longer, about 12 weeks, but again she made a full recovery. It’s now been 3 years and she has a full and normal life. I think the shape of her rear legs has altered slightly to accommodate the new anatomy but so glad I didn’t put her through this major surgery .

      Hi, @@Saraseyes611 it’s been about week and a half since we started with the near infrared pad daily (10 min on each back leg) and he has improved he is putting weight on that leg although it is not 100% like it has been before. He was also on antiinflamatories for a month so it might be the meds, but he is off them now so i will see if he’s still improving just with the infrared and suplements. If you are looking to get that infrared pad look for a near/short frequency since i found that is the one that heals and not heats. I’ll keep you updated if you would like.

I noticed she has been off load the same leg while running today and sometimes she looks completely normal. This happened to my rottweiler before she was even two years old. I tried to let it heal for 2 months, but she was still favoring it somewhat. Being such a young dog, I opted for the TPLO surgery for $10,000.00 (that's not a typo). It's a very hard 12 week recovery, with only short walks in the yard, and no stairs or running, taking her out with a sling down a ramp I built. We mostly kept her isolated to one room which was really hard. Well, it did payoff in the end, as she can now run normally on the leg. You cannot tell anything was ever wrong. Unfortunately, all the vets have told me she will almost definitely need surgery on the other leg as well at some point. Thankfully, I can afford it, and it does work amazingly. Good luck to all who have this happen to their beloved dog!

    Over the years I've had a lot of dogs with stifle problems. I just leave them alone. No surgery, no meds. The pain keeps them from using the leg. They lift it up all the time which gives it a chance to heal. Typically they put no weight on it for six to eight weeks, then start to use it a bit and by six to eight months they are back to normal. Problem I've seen with pain meds is it lets them use the leg, which delays healing. With surgical intervention the dog is dead lame for a long time after until the joint heals - about the same length of time as they would be dead lame if you just left it alone. Also, it has been my observation dogs that get surgery often have the opposite leg blow out six months later and also need surgery. I think surgery for dogs like this is an expensive scam - the "treatment du jour" - that is popular for vets to push because it is lucrative. Leave them alone and most of them will heal up in six months.

I’m reluctant to go to a vet because of cost, pressure on using surgery (fear if not) and manipulation as diagnoses making it worse. 4-couldn’t you just gotten x-rays instead of the specialist manipulation making it worse? Often when one leg tears and surgery is done, the other leg will tear. Research this subject and look into various alternative methods like scalar therapy, acupuncture, etc. Keep your dog lean too. Fat dogs are more likely to have joint issues and avoid early spay/neutering! as the hormones are needed for full development of joints and ligaments, etc. Wait until after 2 or longer.

    Thanks Steve for these amazing videos about your dogs injury..my ME Golden Doodle dog of 50 + lb got some soft tissu injury a month back and after 2 weeks of anti inflammatory meds he didn't improve as expected as we might have overdo some of his walking..he is 3 yrs old and couldn't keep him as rested as we should've..:(.. Also he has to be fed upright in chair which doesn't give rest to his injured leg..but I m hopeful that with timr he would get better probably..he is probably at your 9 months dogs heal where he walks with his 4 feets fine but initial wake up from long time sleeping is still a discomfort for him :(.. Any advise from you would be greatly appreciated

      @stevestrike6867 Před 5 měsíci

      A trusted veterinarian can tell you if it is full a partial tear. For a full tear they mostly recommend surgery. If your dog is walking okay then he may have a partial tear that needs rest and time to heal, which is difficult for young active dog. Sometimes you just have to be very strict in your methods for reducing activity, like fencing areas off and keeping him on leash when he goes outside. An unhealed partial tear will be susceptible to a full tear in my experience.
