Ambedkar Reading Group at Cambridge: The Evolution of Ambedkar's Navayana Pragmatism
This talk was organised by the ARC and took place on Wednesday 8th February 2023 the speaker is Dr Scott R Stroud, University of Texas at Austin, author of The Evolution of Pragmatism in India and the chair is Prof Manali Desai, Head of the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge.
Abstract:
Many know of Bhimrao Ambedkar's educational experiences in the west. Some know of how
much he thought of the classes he took with John Dewey. Almost nothing is known, however,
about the depth of Ambedkar's engagement with John Dewey and his pragmatism. This talk
builds on the archival and conceptual work in my forthcoming book, The Evolution of
Pragmatism in India (Chicago, 2023), to argue that Ambedkar extended various parts of Dewey's
pragmatism and used them to help construct a novel vision of meliorist philosophy. Ambedkar's
new form of pragmatism--what I call Navayana Pragmatism--changes the parameters of
pragmatist psychology and sociology to align them with the anti-caste struggle. Undergirding
Ambedkar's critique of caste is his pragmatism's vision of social democracy as a way of life for
individuals and groups in a community. Thus, Ambedkar's roles as an anti-caste thinker, a
pragmatist philosopher, and a theorist of democracy all converge when we think of him as part
of the evolution of pragmatism in India and the world.

Absolutely fascinating topic and, unfortunately, a quite uncommon research theme. I bought this book as soon as I heard of it. I would add that this research shows class within the UK but one could make the case for international elites also being brought up to have advantages regardless of where they go. I’m talking about social capital, levels of education (at the right, well-known institutions), and professional connections.
Great book. Just suggested my art students read it. Terrible that they think their lack of success is down to something they did wrong.

Reddit brought me here after Dr. Friedman's book was cited in a recent virally upvoted post, "The plateauing of cognitive ability among top earners." This is wonderfully important work. Does anyone know of studies like this, but focused in the United States?
Dr. Desai, you need to teach your students how to debate. So they do not need to bang drums and scream when they do not agree with someone.

On the one hand, universities position themselves as bastions of equality and diversity, liberal in their outlook and at the forefront of instigating change in their contributions to knowledge and adding to the experiences of students. Yet, on the other hand, they fail to represent the communities they serve; they continue to be dominated by those from white, middle class backgrounds to the exclusion of others. There are only 80 black professors in the UK compared to 13295 who are white (ECU, 2017)
Sounds like a clarion call, and the key message is to listen with intentionality.
