Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Steam Polar Express & Frostburg Flyer
Western Maryland Scenic Railroad Steam Polar Express & Frostburg Flyer
Featuring the former C&O 1309 Steam Engine, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad operates from Cumberland, Maryland to Frostburg, Maryland. The Western Maryland (WM) was a railroad that served Cumberland, Maryland, along with a branch line that ran between there and Frostburg, as well as stretching to other small towns, like Hancock and Connellsville. In 1973, the WM joined the Baltimore and Ohio and Chesapeake and Ohio railroads to group into the Chessie System, which would eventually be completely merged into the new CSX transportation system. The Cumberland-Frostburg branch was subsequently abandoned. In the late 1980s, the city of Cumberland started seeing the old branch line as a possible tourist attraction, so a joint effort was formed; Allegheny County contributed $585,000, the city $2,470,560, and the city of Frostburg $338,427 to purchase the corridor. As part of the deal, the newly formed Scenic Railroad Development Corporation (SRDC) was given the old WM shops in Ridgeley, West Virginia, a 1913 station in Cumberland, and an 1891 Cumberland & Pennsylvania wooden depot in Frostburg. From 1989 to 1991, the trackage was used by the Allegany Central Railroad before the SRDC began operations themselves as the WMSR.
WMSR's excursion trains start in Cumberland at the Western Maryland Railway Station... except for the Polar Express trains that operate out of Frostburg seasonly. Check the www.wmsr.com website for updates on which trains are running from which station to be sure before planning your trip!
Built in 1913, the Cumberland station also houses one of the six Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park visitor centers as well as other attractions and offices. From there, the trains follow a former Western Maryland Railway line northwest through the Cumberland Narrows, a deep water gap formed by the passage of Wills Creek between Haystack Mountain and Wills Mountain, parts of the Wills Mountain Anticline geological structure. They then proceed up the Allegheny Front through a water gap formed by Jennings Run, pass Mt. Savage, and terminate at the former Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad depot in Frostburg. The train returns to Cumberland by the same route. As of this writing the turntable is not in use at Frostburg as the WMSR 1309 steam engine is too long to fit on it!

A 4K look at the railroad operations of the Arizona and California Railroad during the SD40-2 era. Filmed from 2017 up until May of 2022 when “new” GE CW44-9's arrived (but had not yet in service) this is an in depth look at one of the very last pure "EMD SD40-2" operations in the country. This video is oriented starting with EAST bound trains from Cadiz, then WEST bound trains from Matthie/Cas...

Excellent work! I wish my father was still alive to enjoy these videos, he would love them as I do. I hope to see more.
We thank you!!! Working on some updates in the next few weeks!
Very well put together video.
Thank you kindly!
Maravilloso ferrocarril me priba estos vídeos
We thank you!!!!! Obrigado!!!
absolutely outstanding
We thank you. There will be an update to this video soon so subscribe and hit for notifications ! :)
@22:28 , Whispers “do it again”
Someday!
I'm planning a trip next month maybe, was there a daily count of trains?
Quite a few. Hard to chase them on this line as the tracks go away from the highways for great lengths of time. We recommend the line between castle hot springs and congress. Between congress and Kirkland difficult to get near tracks. From skull valley to Paulden difficult to get near as well. Probably 6 trains during daylight hours a day on it
Great Videos!!! Any chance the CSX Sand Patch Division Video will be available again in the future?
Very soon!!!
I was disappointed to see your channel gone. Great that you are back. Are the rest of the videos coming later?
Yes!!’ We are doing some updates on Sand Patch and the others but they will all be back!
@acme cinematography: is it possible that you deleted an older video, where the train (i think CSX) starts in a city and amazing grace is played? that was my absolute favourite... any chance for a re-upload?
We will be re-uploading that one in a few weeks! Thanks!!!!
Hello Sir!! Any new videos coming? You are the master!!
Thank you!!! We are working on a new one right now actually. Should be up soon!
Nelson Tunnel is the only tunnel left on the old ATSF Transcon after BNSF daylighted the two tunnels on Cajon Pass back in 2008
Thanks! Wonder how long this one will last???
Fantastic footage of an icon! The whistle on the 1309 is absolutely breathtaking, Such a passionate note!
Many thanks!
Watching the flyover was incredible! Mad respect 🫡🤜🏼🤛🏻
That flyover is an engineering marvel!!
I swear i can hear voices in my headphones! ?
lol. Maybe!
Another incredibly well done video! I love the balance between the raw audio and the soundtrack! Question: @ 28:15 did the crew walk the length of the train?
Thank you!!! Ok that grain train… we don’t know! They do a crew change there for the crew to take that train on the ARZC to Utting for the Lone Cactus Loop Railroad there. But this one was just left there until the next morning early so not sure!!!
MAGNIFICENT VIDEO! I am in love with this RR!!
We thank you! We just started filming a new version with the CW44-9’s but that may be a year or so to get it complete. Such a stunning landscape for the entire line!
Was wondering does A&C have two manifest trains with one crew. Or am I wrong.
Operations have normally have required 2 crews per day to operate between both ends of the line from the operations center at Parker AZ. They use one crew for the Parker to CHS interchange (or Matthie rarely). Then return with same crew to Parker. We are unsure of what is going on west of Parker but it is always a separate crew. ARZC just changed its hours of normal operation between Parker and CHS. For over a decade was a very early morning call from Parker to CHS… 3 am? But this has recently changed. They now appear to depart Parker around 9-10 am. And not to CHS until 1 pm or later. We are awaiting to see if this new traffic pattern is the new normal as it changes how you can photo the line. No idea at all on operation times now from Parker to Cadiz. Used to leave at 2:00 pm. No idea now (and make return trip with same crew)
Glad to see you back, I think you should do a video on the CSX mountain subdivision sometime, i think it's pretty interesting, would love to see a video about that, and glad to see your videos are back, hope to have all your videos back soon
Someday we hope to do that line!!!! And thank you so much!!!!!
That music in the background sounds good music to my ears baby boo yah
Thank you!!!!!!!
Video is awesome
We thank you so much!!!
Wow! Your series of films are stunning! Your channel name says it all, this is railroad cinematography, not train video. Watching these is a relaxing escape to some of the most beautiful spots in the U.S. that just happen to have a railroad running through them. The time of day, angle of views, color filters, the addition of historical and site descriptions, and the music choice are perfect. This is the absolute gold standard! Thank you for the time, effort, and expense you've gone through to produce these films and posting them for us to enjoy!
We thank you!! It is a labor of love. America is so beautiful. It is a privilege to share our stunning railroads and beauty with the world!
Like all your other videos, every scene is a work of art !!!!
Thank you so much!!!

GREAAATT !! Really Happy to watch this awesome movie ... AGAIN !! 💯💯👍👍👍. Hope you re edit SANDPATCH soon !! Thank you so much 😉
They will all be back by late fall!
I had an uncle who spent his full career as a Santa Fe engineer in Arizona. He gave me my first train ride, but I was too young to remember. One of his runs was the Peavine. This video shows a lot of the beauty in Arizona that most people will never see. His last run just before he died was the Prescott to Paulden. After his death they closed the Prescott depot and pulled up the tracks. Thank you for reminding me of him and how much he is missed. Thank you for your excellent videos, and please don't stop, they are the very best!
We thank you!!!!! So awesome to hear the family connection to this line!!!!!
Glad these videos are back on CZcams
Thank you!!!! Glad to be back!!!!!!!!
Stunning American Railroad video
Thank you very much!
You need to publish all your vids on BD4k. I'd buy em all in a NY minute❤❤❤
Superb video & sound tracks
Again. Thanks so much!!!! The Peavine is a difficult line to follow. It has decent traffic but because really impractical to chase trains on the entire line it can be very frustrating !
Superb
Thank you so much!!!
Excellent video and sound track - well done to capture before they disappeared
Many thanks!
Capturing the sound of the EMD 645 engines was paramount for this production. I met Tanya Cecil for whom the 3999 was named. An amazing woman. I hope to lobby the ARZC to putting her name on another engine now that 3999 is gone !
Stunning video & soundtrack - Very glad it has been made available again
Many thanks again!!! The SD40 era was a huge project so glad to hear your nice comments on it!
Finally, your back!
For now anyhow!!! We thank you !!!
Wow, WHAT a video, absolutely stunning, the scenery, the music and those loco's look amazing! Sitting here on yet another grey day in the UK, i think to myself being an engineer on that train with that scenery must be the best job going. Not suggesting it's easy, i'm sure it's not but there's worse things to do. A beautiful video, much appreciated.
We thank you so very much!!!! Glad they are brightening your day in the United Kingdom!!!
Welcome back…!! I’ve really missed you. Your work is absolutely breathtaking..!!
We thank you!
So good to see the channel back! Great videos! Love the cuts and angles and flow with informative graphics and no unnecessary talking.
Much appreciated!!!!!! We agree so much on the talking. America is so beautiful!!!!
Soo glad this is back on YT.
Thanks!!!! Music copyright issues but sorting them out as usual.
Welcome back! Hope to see more of the videos again soon. Would love an update on what happened. Hope monetization with CZcams isn’t the main problem. Make sure to let us know if you ever get to selling vids on physical media or a Patreon page or whatever to keep it going.
Thank you!!!! Will keep that in mind. Issue is just on copyright. We think it’s solved again. Ugh
Amazing video! I love your cinematography, relaxing music, amazing footage, and information via graphics [and not narration]. Its great to see your videos available again.
Thanks!!! As always music copyright issues but hopefully will get more of them back or at least rotate them!
Great work lads
Thank you so much from all of us!!!
非常棒的视频,适合投放在大屏幕观看,4K纯享!
Thanks!!!
The scenary is good however I am curious about the Bridge, its location. (4:55 on this video). Why they have chosen this path ? Why they have not gone straight rather than so many curves. The bridge height could be less. ++++ a lot more.
Thanks!!! Not sure!!!
Terrific job your golden hour shot are top shelf. Great job.
We thank you!!
I commend your efforts in posting good train videos, i must say that your works are a master piece never before experienced, 21- gun salute sir!!
We thank you!!!!
PROLLY . . . THE BEST TRAIN VIDEO I'VE SEEN IN THE LAST 10 YEARS !! GREAT CAMERA, MUSIC & PACING !! HAS ANYONE SAID . . . GREAT EDITING ?? KEEP IT UP !! BE WELL !!
Glad you enjoyed it the comment on editing is especially appreciated!!!
Just incredible all around! I don't believe I've ever seen so much green out that way. Really puts in perspective all the rain this year! Assuming it was this year!
Thank you very much!!!! This was all done a year ago actually! :)
@@AcmeCinematography thats amazing! Well it looks unreal along with all the shots in the video!
