ARTs + Change Conference, June 2-5, 2022
Title: STONO: An Audio Ritual
Artist: T. Carlis Roberts
Date: June 2, 2022
About the Conference:
ARTs + Change is a virtual conference hosted by the University of Rochester’s Institute for the Performing Arts, in partnership with the Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center, 540 WMain, Inc., Create a Space Now, Eastman Institute for Music Leadership, the Warner School, and the Rochester Fringe Festival. With nearly 40 presenters, this conference provided opportunities for artists of all disciplines, educators, community members, and community organizations to come together for the sharing of work, participatory workshops, panel discussions, research presentations, performances, guided discussions, and more. This was the second year we held this conference, and it provided a great way to engage with both UR artists and the greater performing arts community.
About The Artist:
T. Carlis Roberts is an artist and scholar who engages sound as a tool for transformation and liberation. T’s work straddles theater, film, television, and music - each project driven by the desire to disrupt boundaries of race, nation, and gender and develop new vocabularies for expression. In this presentation, T shares excerpts from and discusses his audio-ritual, STONO. This piece explores the Stono slave rebellion, which unfolded outside of Charleston, South Carolina in 1739. While typically depicted as a suppressed insurrection, STONO asks: Is there another story? STONO offers a space to imagine a more expansive and surprising story about that fateful event - a space in which race, gender, and humanity are cosmically destabilized.

Question - Who is going to fill the huge gap left when John Mooney days are over ? I see no one coming through the ranks. Let me know please folks. Love this man and his music, a true one off guitarist and vocalist, make the most of him, while he is still going strong.

I would like to thank John Mooney and The Cottage Hotel in Mendon NY for giving me the blues. In the mid 1970's, there was a musical aberration called disco destroying people's leisure time, making them wear polyester and line up behind velvet ropes to experience garbage. John Mooney and Earl Weems were bringing real disruptive music to the outskirts of Rochester NY, and huge crowds of actual non-disco revelers would crowd into the Cottage Hotel and dance barefoot in puddles of beer. I have the blues, and it is the greatest gift that I didn't have to stumble into accidentally.

I remember those days in the 70s in Rochester with John, Brian, Molly and Eddie. I was one of John's women. At that time he was cycling between me, Nancy, & Patty. I sure loved him too much so I had to bow out, it got too hurtful. But we sure had a lot of great times with Freddie & Barbara, Earl Weems, Davey Helander (rip) Roomful of Blues, great great times. Still love you John, lookin great, still sounding awesome.

Very important social- and cultural history of African-American blues occurrences and development after 1945, note his distinction between the different generations which is important, i.e. the "real blues" is somewhat censored when arranged and performed in recording studios (1940-up) ...one can only try to imagine the extremely powerful statement it must have transformed in its original form-it was about hopeless working conditions, misery and life-threatening surroundings which often ended in death. Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful .....if you care at all about the power and soul of Delta Blues Music. The sheer commitment and passion of those who, in spite of an apathy among American audiences to truth and the Art of the Real, helped these men to the stage where they were able to share this ancient, incredibly powerful form of communication, passion, and Divine music, which still to this day circles the earth, expanding our sense of what it means to be Human. Thanks to Dick Waterman and the UR Institute for Performing Arts. Bravo!

Sad that his guy doesn't acknowledge that Son House revived his career in this period ('64 to ''74) thanks in large part to Alan Wilson of Canned Heat. Wilson taught House how to play his own songs again. Son House had forgotten his own music. Wilson, dead at 27 in 1970, just before Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, of whom John Lee Hooker said, "I love this kid's harmonica. I don't know how he follows me, but he does.""
