Raglan Road - Pat Kelleher - Irish Folksinger
Irish folksinger Pat Kelleher from County Cork, Ireland sings the great song "Raglan Road" written by Patrick Kavanagh and immortalized by Irelands best, Luke Kelly. This song means a lot to me as Luke sang it to me acoustically with his banjo on the one time that I met him in the backstage bar at the Cork Opera House in July 1981. He was so gracious and asked me to sing a song with his banjo.

Here's a version that sounds close to Luke Kellys Lick for “Come My Little Son” (T = Thumb, I = Index, M = Middle Finger) One full sequence consists of T(4) - T(3) - I(2)M(1) - T(3) - I(2)M(1) - T(3) - T(5) - T(3) - I(2)M(1) T(3) - I(2)M(1) - T(3) Where you see two together like “I(2)M(1)” with no hyphen in between, both strings need to be picked at the same time. Beautiful rendition pat. From stephen dunne
Thanks a million Stephen. Hope you and the family are well
One of my favorites!
Thank you kindly Marjie ☘️
Well done, Pat! I love how you play clawhammer without hitting the head of the banjo. You did this on my Bart Reiter when you visited us here in Maine, I was really impressed! Your clawhammer banjo playing is SO clean and melodic.
Wonderful Pat! Perfect banjo finger picking and... what a voice!!!
Wonderful song well written congrats Pat superb
Thanks so much Canice.
Beautiful sir,,,,❤
Awesome Pat .. great job, beautiful video !
Thank you kindly Charlie. Much appreciated. ☘️

Found this years ago and just had to hear it again. Timeless!
Pat, a really beautiful song sung so well by you!
Thank you kindly
Thank you Pat for the lesson too.
Thanks to Pete Seeger for the innovation 💡 of the long neck banjo.
One of your best, Pat. Your clawhammer, especially on that particular banjo is simply stellar!
Thanks so much John. ☘️
Beautiful, Pat!
Hi pat, lovely stuff, what chords are you using?
"C tuning" not to be confused with "Double C tuning", Chords are C, F and G
@@patkelleheririshfolksinger thank you, it's a great traditional tuning
Lovely job..what way does the fjngering work on this one?
Thank you. This link should help. If you look through the comments, the picking pattern should be in there somewhere. czcams.com/video/C6_ZVnb4UGg/video.htmlsi=CyzXZlsklarU0nd-
Very good song and irish voice ❤ but I'am not irish but play LN banjo from France...

Lovely, just lovely.
This is a beautiful song my great uncle tomas o’briain was apart of the the men he was one of the five who were then was executed
Such a fantastic story, Im now 17 years old, been listening to him for more then 3 years now, my favourite person that ever existed. As your story went, I imagined just how it felt since i dreamed about me and him talking. Honestly, Im very jelous of you and I really wish i known more about Lukes personal life... Great banjo and playing, looks just like his and beautiful story, thank You so much for sharing...
One more comment please - in what country are you? I'm guessing Canada. I've been to Nova Scotia a few times teaching industrial software classes but I've never really spent much time there. Living in Florida however, has provided me the distinct pleasure to have several Canadian friends. Last week as I was busking in a small tourist town outside of Gainesville, Fl. Micanopy by name, the only folks to stop and talk to me (and tip me) was a family from Canada. It lifted my spirits because busking on the street can be a downer often but these kind folk made it all worth while.
Me Pat, from Cork Ireland and my friends Tom and Eddie from South Massachusetts USA. I visited Nova Scotia area of Canada for the first time in late 2023.
Well I got that wrong but no matter. You all are making some fine acoustic music together. @@patkelleheririshfolksinger
Where can I find the lyrics to the first song Tom Kennedy sang: "These Friends of Mine". I'd like to sing it myself, if that's OK!

Hi Pat - I'm delighted to have found your channel. I'm Les Caraher, a singer/player of traditional American folk songs. We share a common surname almost, given the numerous spellings variations over the years. My ancestors immigrated to the USA in the 1840's from County Armagh, my research tells me. Another commonality is my sister (deceased) was named Kathleen. (Not important just thought I'd mention). I play guitar, banjo and harmonica mostly - fiddle when no one is around to hear me. My wife, Mary, and I have played music together for our whole marriage life of forty-three years. She's a fine fiddler of some local note, a fine singer and arranger of harmony. Her latest group "Harmony Fare" is a good example of her talent. The point is I'm enjoying your singing and playing very much and I wouldn't be surprised to find a song or two of yours in my next set if you do not mind. They are delightful tunes.
My banjo is a Gibson RB175 long neck circa 1963 vintage
Beautiful sir,,,,,😢 so sad,,,,,love it..
Great explanation sir,,,,,thanks a lot.
Old Yank Army guy here. Flew gunships alongside some fine Aussie pilots in Vietnam. Have studied the Battle of Gallipoli and have always been drawn to this beautiful song. Many connections. So well done. (Also play an old Gibson 5 string.) When will we ever learn?
Thanks for posting. True to say, mankind will never learn ... as I get older, my hope dwindles as history seems to repeat itself regardless of how advanced and modern we think we are. ✌️
Petersens brought me here
This was awesome! I've played dulcimer for some time now and I've been trying to learn to play Claw Hammer Banjo recently. I found a used actual Dulcijo at an online music store and purchased it. Maybe one day I can make mine sound a little like yours. Thanks!
Hi, Pat, thanks for the great lesson! You did a perfect job of teaching us this style of picking. I hope you post a lot more of these! When are you coming back to Maine? Did Alan Williams get in touch with you?
No plans to come back in the near future. Will keep you posted. Happy New Year to you both ☘️🪕👌
this is a beautiful cover, hats off to ya mate.
I wanna dance 💃
It's good seeing you again, Pat!
Great lesson Pat.
Thanks for notating that roll pattern Pat. I've struggled with clawhammer and up picking (Seeger) style and have just started to try fingerpicking backup.
And that's how it's done.😊
I grew up being forced into hearing the original fureys by my dad something like 40 years ago now, I loved what I heard listening to this thank you
Could listen to you play all day ... beautiful setup on that LN ... such nice tone.
Hey Charlie. Thanks for the comment. Are you back on Facebook? Wasn't sure if should accept with all the scammers.
Hi Pat .. YES, it's me .. Great to hear you play and sing again ! I'll be here for a while .. my 'other job' doesn't like me to use it, but I must say it's nice to connect with my friends again... You get such a good sound out of your long necks ... I still have two left, a Martin 'Vega' and a 'Vega' Excel, very rare blond model ..@@patkelleheririshfolksinger
Amazing cover!
Inspiration ☘️✍️🤗👍
Wonderful thanks for posting
You sang and played this classic very well. The only verse I don`t like is the anti police verse. Other than that this song is a masterpiece.
It certainly is a touchy verse and I certainly can see what you mean. It's of it's time with first recording in 1934 written by Goebel Reeves
Great music. Just subbed, thank you.
Wonderful. I use to play folk guitar many years ago. Hearing you perform this song makes me wonder if I need to get myself a guitar again. Beautiful
Oh man, this song makes me cry. Your performance is beautiful. Thanks for share.
Christy moore would be proud!!
Nicely done
