The French bugler shot, in the beginning, is portrayed by writer and director Randall Wallace's real-life son. During the last year of production, sound engineer Steve Bartkowicz consulted the Frederick Military Academy Alumni Webmaster Richard W. Abrams (uncredited) to determine which French bugle call would have been played during the opening massacre sequence. For historical accuracy, Abrams was also called upon to determine if the bugle call would have remained the same today as in the year of the massacre. The bugle call was found on a French military website, and forwarded to Bartkowicz. In the beginning, the French Group Mobile 100 is ambushed and killed by the last man. In reality, the group was ambushed several times and in all of them, they were able to escape, though only after suffering severe casualties. Furthermore, although a Viet Minh officer is shown giving an order to execute all prisoners, about 800 men were taken as POWs. Besides the fact that the French Troops's beret insignia is worn on the wrong side, the insignia itself is wrong: it's a modern metropolitan infantry cap badge. French Paratroopers would have proudly worn their renowned cap badge, a stylized winged arm holding a sword. As for the white kepis worn by the Legionnaires, they were not worn on combat patrols for obvious reasons in Indochina and they were never worn by officers ever (a Captain and a Lieutenant in this scene). The wearing of the white kepi is the privilege of the enlisted men, upon being promoted to NCO, Legionnaires give up their white kepis for the standard dark blue ones. In the opening scene, French troops are shown with their beret insignia on the left side of their forehead. In reality, and contrary to most countries in the world, French soldiers have their insignia on the right side of their forehead. During the opening scene of the attack on the French unit, the NVA regulars charge the French. But even though many of them are carrying the 7.62mm Soviet SKS rifle with fold-back bayonet attachment, almost none of them use any bayonet at all during the charge except the soldier who kills the French officer with his bayonet. This makes no sense when charging with an infantry rifle, because once the breech of a rifle is empty, then it's almost completely useless at close quarters except as a very unwieldy club. This is why bayonets were invented in the first place.
