So you leave the spout on outside all winter ? Why
Yes, you would leave the outside tap open if the water is shutoff on the inside. This gives added protection for any water expansion. This would be optional if you followed the other steps
😭 "promosm"
Good explanation
Le Corbusier was right. "A house is a machine for living in."
I see nobody is explaining WHY we need to do this. I live in Toronto and haven't done this for years, no issue. As long as you keep indoor valve open, even when water freezes in the pipe, it shall expand into the indoor pipe, why it's a problem?!
Pipes may break/crack then they freeze which causes water damage/flooding. Especially if you have a finished basement, you won't even know there's a cracked pipe behind a finished wall until there's a ton of water. I work with property restoration companies and this is a very common and easily avoidable claim.
Why would you do all of this *before* making a video tutorial on doing all of this???
I don’t know where to find the spout for the water 😩
The shut offs are usually located in the utility room near furnace or in the basement close to the outside tap. If the basement is not finished it will be easier to find. If it is finished there should be an access cover or panel in the ceiling for it. Hope that helps
How much is this for
This one sold a couple years ago. We can build it again in Kilworth or in Applewood on London both on a 50ft lot. I would need to get price quoted.
Mine worked great all winter but now my downstairs bedroom and bathroom are freezing cold. I have my Lifebreath on 20/40 Recirculate and have all winter. All I can think of is that the damper isn’t working properly. It’s awful because that room is so cold.
So what to do if you still get a very slow drip after draining? Put the cap on, but still leave the line open for winter?
Al Geddis if you are still getting a drip water may be getting by the shut off inside for some reason. Leave your outside tap open. Did you drain inside from thumb screw at shut off?
@@JasonFroude I closed the line inside (stop & waste valve), opened the outside water spout (bib), removed inside thumb screw and drained. The inside valve is obviously still leaking a very small amount. Now what, put thumb screw back on and hope for best?
Al Geddis I would leave outside tap open and monitor. Frost free taps are pretty good but if we hit - 40 then it could freeze past the outside wall into the line in basement. Drain after a week / month to see how much is in line. If it's alot might want to replace the valve.
@@JasonFroude I have hung a plastic quart bag off the inside valve to catch the "drip" for now. I have to empty about once a week. I am thinking of just putting thumb screw back on and let it "leak" outside or connect small aquarium type hose to drain valve and let it drip into french drain for winter. Suggestions other than hiring plumber? Photo at mrag.jalbum.net/bum-valve.jpg
Al Geddis I would put thumb screw back in and drain once it gets before 10-15c. As a side note you should insulate your plumbing from your electrical wires. That is not safe. Electrical wires should not touch any plumbing, HVAC or gas lines. Shock hazards
