High-Power Attacker With Low-Power Engines: Henschel Hs 129
In this video, we talk about the Henschel Hs 129, a German ground-attack aircraft from World War II that attempted to use more unwanted parts in its construction. We first talk about the general logic of using unwanted or lesser-wanted parts in aircraft construction, and how it was most commonly seen in the use of wood instead of metal. We then talk about Germany's search for a ground-attack aircraft, spurred on by their success in the Spanish Civil War. We talk about the requirements for the project, including the use of a low-power, not-in-demand engine, and how it resulted in the Hs 129 and Fw 189C.
We then compare the poor performance of both planes, which were far too underpowered and severely restricted pilot vision from cramped cockpits. We talk about how the Hs 129 won by being cheaper to produce, how its initial production models failed, and how the design managed to survive through the German takeover of France. We then talk about the improved performance of the Hs 129, its solid performance at the Battle of Kursk, and its evolution through stronger weaponry, going up to a 75mm cannon.

If they had made the model 22 into a parasite fighter or interceptor I think it would have been a real winner. Take out the warhead and replace with extra fuel and a cannon or rockets, and add the landing skid off the trainer, and you have a super maneuverable, lightweight, easy to produce fighter aircraft with (probably) a ridiculous top speed. Add several solid rocket motors that can be turned on for a momentary boost and it's even faster. Think about how ridiculously lightweight this aircraft is without the warhead, and that even with the warhead the model 22 has a near 300mph speed in level flight. Now reduce the weight significantly by removing the warhead and adding fuel for increased range. Think about the fact that it could have been carried under a bomber in a bomber formation with a pilot riding inside, ready to release the plane at a moment's notice. I think it could have been a great design, just not the way they built it. If it had been built as the model 22 from the beginning and as a fighter I think it could have potentially been one of the highest performance fighters in the Pacific theater. The design was quite good I think, the use as a manned cruise missile was stupid.

One big problem with Japanese engine power was the fuel they were losing. Because of their limited oil supply, even before the war started, they couldn't refine it to the levels the US did because they would lose too much quantity. The Germans faced the same problem, which is why German engines were built to a significantly higher displacement for the same horsepower. And both Japan and Germany pioneered water injection.

I can confirm on the small gun/ big bullet question. When visiting the states, a friend there let me shoot through his gun collection. One of them was a tiny Derringer pistol loaded with .45 long colt ammunition. The tip of the bullets was at the end of the barrel, while the grip was shorter than my hand. I had a bruise on my hand for about a week.
