I used to have a picture of the Statue of Liberty outside my office (When I was CIO), the caption said "Bring Us Your Problem, Not Your Solution." The business and IT roles where confused, intime, and with total cost transparency ( I cancelled all "IT" projects that did not have a Business Sponsor and started over) the business came to realize the cost drivers for IT (them) and took responsibility for collaborating among themselves regarding what projects where mutually beneficial before they came to the table with needs and nice to have for the year. This enabled IT to support real business initiatives with and articulated value. You could ask any IT type in the hall what they were up to and they could tell you in the context of a real business need.

@@Intricity101 lol, not much unlike the 37 years in "IT". I finally was in a position to try things I thought would solve the root of most IT "issues" and that is IT taking on things they should not. For example - Implementing Business Solutions, (implementing the tools, infrastructure, applications the business has architected without IT or Architecture review); IT trying to convince the business what is valuable to them, taking "orders". The organization needed transparency as to what costs were realized for IT services, and why, and by whom. I initiated a monthly review process to provide the "business" with a forum for them to share among themselves what objectives they had. This resulted in communication that simply didn't happen before, the results were very impactful to the organization and the long-term relationship with their new partner, "IT".

Well done, but introducing the concept of 'conspiracy theory' into the video was not necessary nor productive. You could have used a much more appropriate alternative. Ostracising that concept within your fine video diminishes the overall message and borders on a category error. The term 'conspiracy theory' was re-introduced into society, in its present form, by the CIA during the mid 1960s in order to create a means to control and inhibit public concerns over their involvement in the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy. Dr. Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X. The term has since been used to corral in any other public concerns since that time by transforming the meaning into a pejorative which then inhibits the open debate of any topics which they need to control. Conspiracies are and have been a part of humanity's search for truth for thousands of years. Visit any construction site near you an you'll find them in terms of the misuse of funds or the use of foreign non-union workers. You introduce your own misunderstanding and bias into a very fine video on a completely different subject.

I’m so glad you’re liking the videos. In the Indian culture it’s common for them to have gurus. Basically personal mentors, I think this is kind of a lost art but I think it really is the key to powerful insights that stick for a long time. My data management mentor passed away last year, which was really a blow for me. I’ve been lucky enough to be able to dip into an entire team of consultants, which has been probably the greatest asset that I’ve had. Of the technical books that I have read I kind of feel like they are either too zoomed in so that they become irrelevant quickly over time, or they are way way way too zoomed out so there’s no resolution as to how it’s applicable. I don’t know if you have kept up with our ProTalks, but we do those monthly and the “what’s new” section is always more than we can fit on the slide… the singularity is knocking on our door 🙃 In terms of data modeling, I would recommend a book called The Data Warehousing Toolkit. It’s an old book, but the concepts in it are rock solid when it comes to modeling data for business use. There are other data, modeling books and methodologies like Data Vault, which are definitely interesting for certain use cases.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:01 🗣️ Introduction to Data Security and Access Control - Data security involves more than just protecting against hackers; access control is crucial. - Access control defines which data segments internal parties can access. - Access control is vital for minimizing noise and isolating data effectively. 01:23 📊 Evolution of Data Access Control - 20 years ago, data was primarily consumed through business intelligence reporting applications. - Centralization of data began with the wider adoption of data warehousing. - Access control was mostly in the business intelligence layer during this period. 02:33 🌐 The Challenge of Modern Data Access Control - Recent years have seen centralization of data due to cost-effective storage methods. - Cloud data platforms enable scalable querying of centralized data, introducing more complexity. - Large organizations require flexible access control for various tools and audiences, which can't be achieved solely in the business intelligence layer. 03:45 🔄 Benefits of Deep Access Control - Security should be integrated into the data architecture, not just in the data warehouse. - Deep access control ensures consistency and flexibility, allowing any layer to access data. - Loose coupling of components is essential for upgradability and interchangeability of analytics tools. 04:56 🛡️ Active Governance and Auditability - Administrators must actively manage roles and grants for data segments. - Cloud platforms can pose challenges for managing access control. - Intricity has extensive experience in implementing access control in cloud data architectures for large organizations. 🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:01 📚 Introduction to Data Security and Access Control - The video starts with an introduction to the importance of data security and access control. - Access control is defined as the process of determining what segments of data internal parties can access. - Access control is vital for minimizing noise and ensuring data is relevant to the right parties. 01:10 🔒 Evolution of Access Control in Data Architecture - In the past, data access was primarily through business intelligence reporting applications. - Access control was concentrated in the business intelligence layer. - Centralization of data and the rise of cloud data platforms have changed the way access control is managed. 03:02 🏛️ Shifting Access Control to the Data Lake - Access control needs to be integrated into the data architecture, particularly in the data lake where core data resides. - This approach ensures that all users can access data consistently, whether from the data warehouse or data lake. - Loose coupling of components is essential for flexibility and scalability. 04:27 📈 Benefits of Deep Access Control - Deep access control allows every user to access any data point without concerns about the querying tool. - Achieving this requires active governance, auditability, and sustainable standards. - The benefits of deep access control include improved data architecture and flexibility for business stakeholders. 04:56 📝 Additional Resources and Consultation - Intricity has extensive experience in implementing access control for large cloud data architectures. - A white paper titled "How to Botch Your Snowflake Deployment in Three Easy Steps" addresses critical points related to access control. - Viewers can access additional resources and consult with specialists regarding their specific situations.
