I'm sincerely curious about one thing - how could you live in NZ for 8 years and still not pick up the tiniest bit of a NZ accent?

What I found and this is my personal opinion was that NZers have so many misconceptions about America.

American who moved to New Zealand 7 years ago. Auckland is shit and I’d take Christchurch any day. It gets cold but I like seasons. Alas, I’m stuck in Auckland. 😅

Medical insurance in the States is a scam. I always hear Americans call our type of system socialism but in reality its the power of collective bargaining and economies of scale. Over all Americans may have the most advanced tech in treatments by what good is it if it bankrupts you. Over all we would pay less outbof our taxes vs paying the huge cost of insurance in the US and then you stil have to pay 20%

I would recommend Christchurch over Auckland any day.... as a Kiwi living in New Zealand, Auckland is massive and the traffic is hell... however, I would probably recommend Dunedin over Christchurch just because Dunedin is nicer

I’m planning a 4-5 week trip to see both island in November 2025. When do you advise on booking hotels and activities? If I book in advance it doesn’t offer me flexibility if weather changes the circumstances. Should I just pay when I do that activity? Or book online? We (Americans) had NZ neighbors when living abroad and how we loved to "do" that Kiwi accent. Mummy sounded like "Mummoi" to us, "rubbish tins" were our garbage cans. And the kids were always barefoot, wore shorts on the coldest days. Their mums also knitted everything too which was a novelty for us. So we used to organize movie night at the country club, and I remember watching the movie "Mash" and Americans were laughing their heads off while the rest of the audience was sitting in silence. Americans are different and cultures are different but living abroad was the only way we got to know these things. Otherwise yes it is true that Americans do not know the details of other countries and how people actually are or live.

There is normally a diamond on the road leading to a zebra crossing, which is a warning to drivers there is a zebra crossing ahead and you have to give way and be ready to stop. When I lived overseas I was 16 -17yo and I used to babysit three little New Zealand girls - each a year apart from same family and the way they talked to me was so hilarious like they were little mini adults. But they'd also tattle tale on me too so I had to watch my back and make sure I gave them "tea" on time, etc. They were a hoot and compared to American children were so very confident but they were quite devious too. I suppose I was raised to be beaten when "naughty" but they were never never raised that way.

I bought a book from Amazon once and the shipping and handling cost more than the book itself. The idea was to get you to join some Amazon club to get better prices. I wasn't going to be blackmailed to give that man any more money so I avoid Amazon now.

My grandparents lived through the so called "Great depression" and they were always very conscious of having a full FULL pantry. In fact in their basement grandpa built extra shelves to store canned food and supplies of all kinds. I think that legacy of going hungry was passed down through us all and then with all the marketing and advertizing it really got exaggerated.

My baby niece (in the US State of Massachusetts) had a spider bite and the ER bill and three days in hospital with insurance out of pocket was a little more than $5000. That was the deductible amount they had to pay before insurance kicked in. So they are paying a monthly settlement for a nasty spider bite. Now, over a year later it's good news they are applying to become Denmark citizens.

Do NZers still use lots of lanolin based products? It's that characteristic smell that I associate with New Zealand. And yes sports were important. All the husbands played rugby on Sundays followed by a wonderful curry buffet. The wives gossiped on the sidelines (and explained to my American mother how sports made their men perform better in the marriage bed. The good old days !)

The packaged foods part is very true. I remember buying a packet of Ham, Cheese and Crackers in Hawaii which I found so odd but in a good way.

Umm, some of the "regular" cheeses, while not at all fancy, ain't at all bad: Mainland Vintage cheddar, some of the plain and flavoured cow feta cheeses, some of the high-cream blue cheeses are all worth a nibble.,

Nearly all NZ foods are better than anything the US creates......far less chemical additives.Just research MacDonalds fries. Outside the US....... 3 ingredients.......the US.......19 (true). Cheese & dairy ? No contest.......US loses again,& again,& again.........

Do not TIP in New Zealand !!!! Only for truly exceptional service. It is a different economy based upon an extensive minimum wage and welfare system, and you do not rely on tips.

All I can say as a nz born citizen - New Zealand is shit! Do not move here - its expensive, over legislated. Medical services suck and education is a joke. Telco, gas and electricity is so hugely expensive and tax is very high. There is GST on food. Seriously Australia would he a much better option

So to sum it up: - NZ is expensive - I guess weather apps don't work in NZ - NZ is expensive - You can't fill a whole closet with different shoes - NZ is expensive - NZ hasn't completely fallen to consumerism yet (that's a bad thing?) - NZ hasn't completely fallen to consumerism yet (that's a bad thing?)
