When I went to one of their shows in 1992 or 1993 I actually got to meet Simon. I asked if they had anything planned for the next few years, he said that they were going to make a new album and tour called 'Sludgefest 2000', this was before Alvin died, but i guess they cancelled it when he passed. Simon Said there would be Remastered Songs from the original album and new Songs for it. He also said The Chippetes would be on it, probably having their own song. Simon was a really nice guy, wish i could meet him again.

In 1983, the Chipmunks were formed by two NoCal kids, Simon Seville on bass, guitar and vocals and Theodore Seville on drums. Originally, they were a hardcore punk band like their inspiration, Black Flag. However, in 1985, their sister, Brittany Seville, introduced the boys to her boyfriend, Alvin Borcherdt. Alvin became the band's new vocalist and guitarist and added sludge metal influences to the band a la the Melvins and "My War"-era Black Flag. The band changed their name to "Chipmunks on 16 Speed", inspired by the fact that Theodore would apparantly use speed 16 times a week. Then, in 1989, Buzz Osbourne of the Melvins discovered the band playing at 924 Gilman Street. He was able to get a copy of one of the band's demos and he sent it to the Melvins' then label, Boner Records. Boner signed Chipmunks on 16 Speed and in 1990, the band's debut album, Sludgefest released to critical acclaim... atleast in the underground scene. The mainstream just saw them as a Melvins clone. Then, in '91, the world was changed with 4 words; Smells. Like. Teen. Spirit. Kurt Cobain adored Chipmunks on 16 Speed and suddenly, the band was a smash hit. Simon and Theodore's father, David Seville, saw dollar signs in the band. He became the band's abusive manager, sending the band's already fucked-up mental health into a downward spiral. Meanwhile, Brittany Seville became a successful pop star with the Chipettes but that's aside the point. Anyways, in 1992, Chipmunks on 16 Speed released their 2nd (and last) album. The album was a simple self-titled work. A few years later, in '94, the band was invited to Woodstock '94. However, Alvin purposely riled up the security guards to get them to draw their weapons. Alvin would soon die due to suicide by cop. The band broke up not long after. While Simon went into rehab and get married to Jeanette Stevens of the Chipettes, Theodore would go into a downward spiral of cocaine and heroin. By the new millennium, Theodore had overdosed. He lived but in '02, he shot himself. Later, in 2005, Simon, Jeanette and their daughter would go on to form an indie rock band. The band was named in honor of the album that started it all; Sludgefest. RIP Alvin Borcherdt (1960-1994) and Theodore Seville (1966-2002)

Dave may be bad, but Ian is worse. He is physically, emotionally, mentally, and sexually abused them. So much so that he made Dave look like a saint. No wonder Alivn, Simon, and Theodore were insane as hell (and why Alvin committed suicide. And also why the Chippets want to no longer associate with Ian anymore).

All memes aside, this album reminds me of when I was stationed in England. It was a great time being a young stupid ass American in a foreign country and I'd listen to this album when I'd just have an hour of nothing to do and just sit in the smoke pit. Listening to Walk Like An Egyptian while watching F-15s take off at dusk/nighttime is almost a spiritual experience

November 17, 1987. My dad was there, he was recently in Detroit as he was from a small town in Poland. He and my mom were still dating, and he started smoking at a young age. He quit later, but that's besides the point. He fell upon Alvin's music in 85, and didn't know that this album existed. He found out they were going on tour in Detroit, he was joyful. He instantly bought the tickets, they were only 4 dollars each. He invited my mom, but she didn't wanna go. So, he went alone. That was a terrible idea. As he stepped into the building, his jaw dropped in horror. He saw the chipmunks covered in blood. Half of Theodore's face was ripped off, Simon's eyes were bloodshot, and Simon was inviting people onto the stage. After 2 of these songs, my dad told me the first one was Heaven Is a Place on Earth, and he doesn't remember the other. After those, the crowd started throwing things around, and Theodore grabbed Alvin's guitar and threw it in the crowd. Alvin left, saying, "Fuck this shit." He threw himself off the stage as the crowd basically carried him to the exit. Theodore was pissed, and he had a heart attack. He threw something, a guitar, a drumstick, my dad doesn't remember. The object he threw hit my dad straight in the head, as he fell over and passed out. "And that's how I got this dent, Luca." He told me, rubbing a spot on his forehead. I learned what drugs were that day. I was 6.

I was there for the infamous portland show back in 95, right before the band broke up, ill never forget when simon, on god knows what, suddenly stopped playing and began to slump over, and alvin started beating simon over the head with his guitar, screaming that he was "a lazy, useless piece of shit" before theodore and a few brave members of the crowd could get him to stop. I always think about that night when simons overdose only 2 months later is brought up, no wonder he died that way with alvin's abuse and the quickly declining performance of the band as a result.

13/05/24 I found dave in the streets while i was buying some groceries. He was in a horrible state (Malnourished, Mentally Damaged and Completely Broke) I tried to talk with him but the only words that comes from his mouth is "Alvin" That´s the only word that kept saying everytime. Even though he was a horrible person with the Chipmunks, The end of their career ruined his life in a point that he is unrecognizable now. He´s dead for me.

Unfortunately, I’m a little too young to have any personal stories about the Chipmunks. But after doing some digging a few months ago, I found out my uncle used to be neighbors with a retired veteran of the music industry that had a past with them. He was an intern or something with the record company that produced Sludgefest and was helping out in the booth the day they were making, “You Keep Me Hanging On”. From what I remember, the guy personally helped Alvin brainstorm the horn part of that song after some offhand comment a drunk Dave made while viciously criticizing the band earlier that day. Said something along the line of, “A fucking middle school band could play this bullshit better!” Threw his bottle of whiskey against the wall after that apparently; scared the ever loving shit out of the guy. But it gave Alvin the idea and gave the guy, just a 17-year-old intern, a chance to make his mark on music history. My uncle keeps in contact with him a little bit, but not very often. He still lives in that same house in a small town right outside of Atlanta, Georgia. Apparently reunited with Simon and a record executive dinner in 2014 or so but hasn’t talked to him or Theodore since. I’ve heard he never spoke to Alvin again after that day in the studio, which he regrets. He kept his distance from Dave up until Dave wrapped his car around that tree in 2009, but he didn’t care to talk to that piece of shit again anyway. Glad I found this little story out, it’s pretty damn neat.

To say that Sludgemunks came into my life at a good time would be woefully ignoramic. Walking home from my dying girlfriend's hospital room, I noticed a somewhat junked up tape laying just off the road. Me being the Goodwill shopper that I am immediately picked it up to check out the condition. This tape had seen a few days based on the gunk on the case. However the tape seemed to be fine & readable! On my way home to give it a listen I walked by a mugging... I didn't even stop... When I finally get home my dog is gone... Ran offt. Oh well, he was a dick anyway....... At least I have these guys to sink into while I "enjoy" my end 🎉

It still disgusts me how these guys were treated by their label. Oh, so their whole thing is doing downtempo covers of pop songs, huh? Here's a couple "radio edits" that just play the songs at DOUBLE SPEED. If you were around when these guys finally got airplay, you were *pissed off.* Not only did it sterilize anything subversive about their music, but the way it affected their voices made them sound like some sort of small, fuzzy land mammals; maybe gophers or weasels.

One of the women who hooked up with Dave was a friend of one of my late uncles. I think her name was Claire, and she was a rather beautiful blonde. I would describe her as a sweet, kind, gentle, loving, caring, and forgiving woman who was like a mom who wanted what was best for her children while helping them to be successful and able to live their best lives. She actually sacrificed herself to lure Dave into a trap and burn him alive to avenge the Chipmunks, though she gained her angel wings too early as a result. I guess I miss her a little too much, but I know that she’s in a much better place. Fly high Claire. Without you, we wouldn’t have a happy ending to the tragedy of the Chipmunks.

I can't stand all of you romanticizing and worshipping them like this. Theodore literally went to jail for felony assault WHEN HE STABBED A GUY IN THE EYE, Simon straight abandoned his kids and Alvin died to an overdose! Like enjoy the music but stop looking through rose tinted glasses at their era as if it was anything more than 3 junkies who happened to be decently talented with their instruments, and that's only IF they were sober enough to get through an entire set! All I see are comments trying to pretend they were some misunderstood geniuses and it's infuriating.

  • @Icouldntcomeupwithaclevernames

Seeing all of these comments about the band just make me so sad. When I was a kid, I remember living in the same neighborhood as the Chipmunks before they got famous and they were some of the sweetest people I ever hung out with. Hell, I remember one time when I was 9 Theodore came over to my house because he wanted to show me the band he and the others started, and they were great! Alvin was singing his heart out, Simon’s bass was just incredible, and when they were done, we went inside and played some Mario! Unfortunately though, when I eventually moved out, I didn’t hear about them at all. God, what happened to them?

Saw them way back in 86, right when Alvin's drug issues were starting to show. It was a killer set up until the final 15 minutes or so. Alvin started nodding off, Dave had to come out and prop him up on the stack of amps. He eventually up and passed out. He was carried out, and Simon closed off the set. This ended up being one of the early warning signs of what was to come, really came to a head at their final show before Alvin's death in 87. When the band broke up after that, probably the best decision they made. They had some great songs, and it's a shame Alvin never got the help he needed at the time. Maybe Alvin, the Chipettes, and the band as a whole wouldn't have been so troubled without the Heroin and Quaaludes. It's sad to look back and think about what could've been.

i remember seeing the band back in '88 with my then wife out in boston. to our surprise, they weren't out that late as much as we expected, but it was very clear alvin was too high out of his mind to properly sing the songs, i'll never forget when he played my sharona and he just groaned and screamed for the first half of the song until someone in the crowd started heckling alvin. alvin then dropped the mic and dove into the crowd and started kicking his ass. security had to break it up and cancel the remainder of the show. while me and my wife were disappointed, we stopped by for a drink before going home and we ran into simon. we had a very sweet personal conversation and it definitely seemed like the future of the band was undecided in his eyes. he complained to us a lot about alvins drug abuse and theodores ongoing domestic violence legal battles with eleanor. i'll never forget that night, me and my ex wife still talk about it to this day. i hope simon is okay, i bet he misses alvin much more than her and i do
