We used Esso Extra 30W, and 10 W in the winter. All ourVWs lasted well over 100,000 miles, sometimes needing an overhaul. So i just shake my head at all the conversation about oils, its not that big a deal. Change your oil and drive

the gene berg/synthetic question is still rehashed to this day. it's not a conflicting opinion, it's inconclusive/incomplete research done decades ago (berg) vs actual science - synthetics remove more heat from engine parts, it's basic physics. so many people still glued to old, outdated information because they heard or read somthing once and haven't bothered to update themselves since. science doesn't stand still.

With any test it is best to have only one variable. The different cover materials could affect cooling, and the volume of fluid may also have been different since the original cover was leaking. Still, it was an interesting result with a much larger temperature difference than I expected.
