Jeez.. I love these old railroad stories but one thing remains the same in that by running a "Steam-Locomotive" was a completely thank-less, devastating, and ball-busting task" that frail men died from, similar to myself at age 70. Hell, I couldn't be a "Wiper" now a day's. SAD for the love I have for these machines.

I'm writing this, (and guessing about the class of 6060 as a U-1-f), I'm so glad she's out there. But I'm a born-bred GTW / Alco guy and I was never comfortable with the "cheesy" bullet nose that the CNR loco's ran. Rather GTW's 6000 class Mountains with their front mounted Elesco feed-water heaters and Vanderbilt Tenders made it much more ominous "looking". Oh wait...here it is... The GTW locomotives were in the U-1-c class, (again, from ALCO), but let's not cry about spilt milk right? (GTW 6037 in particular). She was scrapped, but Steamtown has a sister of her to this day (1/2/24).

I have had the pleasure of meeting Harry many years ago and has been a big part of our rail life. We were there in Jasper for the amazing retirement party. Was really something. My family and I were volunteers for many years at Alberta Railway Museum. I have also had the great pleasure of riding in the cab many times.

Nice video, done by Shaw Cable, for a network TV presentation. Although I never talked to Mr. Home (because of not being a diehard former), I rode behind the 6060 on many trips out of Montreal, and later out of Toronto, in the 70s and 80s, then a couple of times out of Stettler, when I photographed her before Consolidation AP 41 arrived, to lead the Alberta Prairie excursion trips. Most of the time, I surmised that Mr. Home was at the throttle of his beloved machine. Regretfully, in another video, I should have included a couple of photos I took, of the late, great man in bib overalls, oiling his machine.

Of course, that should be “foamer”, blame the spellcheck. For those who don’t know about foamers; let me describe it as “Andy”, in another video, whom I saw gathering grease from a 6060 piston while she was stopped, and smearing the grease over his face.

I had the honour of riding on 6060 back when I was a child in the 70’s! It was a short tour from Toronto to Niagara. It’s still one of my favourite memories! The opening of this documentary with the little kid was just like me! We lived right by a track that lead to a junction in Malton. I would always sit on the other side of the ditch, and watch the trains go by... 😌

I’d love to get up there to Alberta one of these days to see the 6060 once her latest overhaul is complete. The Rocky Mountain Rail Society has done very well in keeping her in in top form over the years. May Harry Home forever rest in eternal peace in God’s great Kingdom of Heaven.

This is indeed one of the best films dedicated to him and the 6060.

I remember the October 1988 doubleheader “triangle trip” longest doubleheader trip in North American history. Vancouver to Jasper via kamloops, Clearwater, and then Jasper to Prince George via McBride Canyon and then the BC Rail from Prince George back to Vancouver via Pemberton Junction, Lilooet, Boston Bar, and Squamish. Sad part 6060 had a hotbox issue and couldn’t make it to Prince George. One of the cars had a loose truck frame and returned ro Vancouver for repairs. 3716s lubricating rod was broken and had the fireman standing dangerously on the side of the engineer cylinder.
