Toccata on "Noel Nouvelet"
Hello Ubertuba fans! I'm still not able to visit my organ at the moment, so I've brought you this clip from a recital given by Richard McVeigh on his Beauty In Sound channel. The recital, opening the Inaugural Beauty In Sound Organ Festival, was comprised of pieces composed by subscribers to the Beauty In Sound channel and community. Please go and check out Richard's work and subscribe to him. The original recital recording is here: czcams.com/video/w8bqP16LrE8/video.html
This piece, entitled Toccata on "Noel Nouvelet", was my submission. It is a Traditional French Carol (translated "Sing a New Noel"), but is also the Hymn Tune for the Easter Hymn "Now The Green Blade Riseth". My composition was inspired directly by the great French romantic composers such as Widor, Franck, Vierne, Mulet and Guilmant. I composed it in lockdown last February.
Richard performed the work on the Caen sampleset by Sonus Paradisi, which naturally brings alive the romantic French sound.
I really hope you enjoy it!

Fantastic! Love this hymn
How lush and beautiful!!! So peaceful and ethereal! Thank you so much for playing this piece for us!!!
Lo! he comes with clouds descending, Once for favoured sinners slain; Thousand thousand saints attending Swell the triumph of his train: Alleluya! Alleluya! Alleluya! God appears, on earth to reign. Every eye shall now behold him Robed in dreadful majesty; Those who set at nought and sold him, Pierced and nailed him to the tree, Deeply wailing Deeply wailing Deeply wailing Shall the true Messiah see. Yea, Amen! let all adore thee, High on thine eternal throne; Saviour, take the power and glory: Claim the kingdom for thine own: O come quickly! O come quickly! O come quickly! Alleluya! Come, Lord, come!
And lyrics that would never be allowed now!
Superb 👏
Perfect tempo and registration 👌
Nice last verse!
Absolutely wonderful! Plus, my first organist ever who not only shined his duty shoes, but spit-shined them for the performance! Bravo!
Amazing what a worshipful hymn
Magnificently played. Thank you!
Thank you for the explanation of Olivers' life. That was very interesting. Organ music takes me back to my childhood at Grace Covenant Church with William Schutt, organist. RIP Mr. Schutt.
Extremely beautiful melody
Played at our vicar's funeral in 2001.
Bravo! You made the organ sing. Thank you.
Thank you Frances
Beautiful work beautifully played. Great choice of combinations to reflect the rising and falling of this memorable melody. Thank you for posting this
Belíssimo hino da igreja angricana
Thank you. Listening to this is just what I needed to rejuvenate my spirit, and brought tears to my eyes. Made me realise there is still beauty in this world where for the last few years vile, corrupt, evil, authoritarian people have ruined so many lives.
This was played as our wedding recessional - a wonderful professional into our new lives
Howells singing with his own unique voice. Amazing music.
Thank you Roger, and I agree. Howells is unique.
Adore this tune!!!
Takes me right back to school assembly in the sixties.
LOVELY!
great video! thanks for sharing
Great performance. Perfect tempo. I like it. Chapeau.
Wonderful!
Superb!
It's the speed he's marked it! Well done!
I love the registration of the hymn tune when it comes in on the Great (I am assuming it is one the of the open diapasons on the great, probably not #1). Just a little more prounounced than the accompaniment, but very subltely blended so you have to listen for it. I am pretty sure this is what RVW wanted from the piece.
Beautiful! Where is this recorded?
Lovely Hauptwerk (?) setup and well played if a bit fast for my taste.
Can I please find out more about your Hauptwerk organ? Thanks! Had not heard this before and just ordered the music, beautiful!
Thank you Ron. Yes, ask any questions you like, and I’ll try to answer them all.
@@ubertuba Thanks! I'm in the USA -- do you know of UHT manuals and if so what do you think of them? I'd like to have tracker touch. I can't find a Hauptwerk "maker" who uses those keyboards -- should I put something together myself? Thanks!

I love this movement.
Thank you @Ubatuba and @Richard McVeigh those reeds have some bite!! Super composition and playing!
Really great piece, so atmospheric and colourful. I can almost smell the French flavours! I hope you are writing more compositions whilst you are unable to record! Well done!
Great piece, great performance! Would love to buy the sheet music . Can it be ready in february, we sing this tune offen in german during Lent. Cheers from Mainz, Germany.
I'm really enjoying your beautifully polished and musical performances on CZcams! But wondering when next you are going to add another video? I'm totally immersed in the sounds and musical lines of this piece. Well done!
Thank you Odette. Unfortunately, COVID has prevented any recording. I share the organ with my friend and I can’t visit his house to practice and record. Also we have a problem with electronics at present!
@@ubertuba That is certainly a miserable state of affairs! I wish there was a solution. Have you tried social media to see if there is another (superb) organ in your area gathering dust?... Oh well, one can hope!
I met George Thalben-Ball once.
Nice interpretation not too fast. I’m learning this at the moment.
Thank you Luke! Good luck with it!
I'm still coming back and listening to this, years later because its just so good. Hope all is well, and that you can post more soon! I'd love to hear you play "And Can It Be, That I Should Gain", another great Wesley hymn.
This hymn reminds me of my dad'rip'when I deeply think about him I turn to my hymn book and sing it.It gives me such a big relief.Besidesi love traditional worship hymns.
Glad this has brought back some memories.
This is a fantastic piece along with a super performance, too! Is is possible to buy a copy of the score, please?
Hi Paul, glad you enjoyed it. I had great fun writing it and Richard played it spectacularly. In answer to your question, the piece will soon be published in a new organ volume, I don’t have exact dates but I will let you know via a comment here as soon as I have more info. I would expect before Christmas.
@@ubertuba Thanks so much! It's a great piece and I'm really looking forward to buying it. I will look out for your comment!
Yes, i also would love to buy a copy of the score. Is ist already published?
Beautiful!
Well played but just a little too fast for my taste. The title is Processional, not Canter!
Super talented friend, sending ful support u watching from qatar, new friend
Beautifully played with great delicacy and thought for the music, lovely
Also, I just realized that you posted this four years ago. Sorry for being four years late to the party! LOL.
One of my favorite hymns! Thank you so much for sharing this. Your harmonization for the last verse is outstanding! 😊
Beautiful Welsh music. Played at both my parents funerals. Being of Welsh decent, very moving for me.
a rather fine piece !
Thanks Tim, great praise coming from you!
