Ha! I tried this multiple times and the county sprayed and killed everything I planted. They do it still today. Poison going straight into the waterways via roadside ditches and gutters.

I love this, and perhaps I'm way off, but... ticks? especially with narrower walkways and plants hanging over them? don't get me wrong - it's beautiful and enhances neighbourhoods on multiple levels, but ticks are always my first thought walking through/near tall grass, meadows, etc. 😳

In the city of Toledo Ohio. The famous zoo decided to make a prairie in a road medium and the city allowed it for many years even giving signs for it, but due to complaints from drivers the city mowed it all down without the zoo management’s permission! Many people loved it for its rare native plants and butterflies…. And it was well-kept as well! it’s mind boggling to think about how the city destroyed it all. I’m not from there but I felt like sharing because I needed to vent. Cities should give nature a chance to exist but Toledo didn’t care.

Why not take the plant up out of the water? Take it inward or far into a place that needs fertilizer. Use the soil you know, let it break down. Then use the remaining so as a fertilizer. Try.

  • @ConsciousConversations

Our HOA does not allow any plant to not appear symmetrically trimmed at all times:/ Even when it’s not good for the plant or proper at all. Idiots. Native flowers would through them into 100$ fining fits.

I have prunella growing in the turf in my hellstrip. It mows down just fine and still has lots of little flowers (well, it’s winding down for the season). There’s also horestail in it, from before the land was developed five years ago. That also mows down just fine. 😊

  • @sillyjellyfish2421

Even with the HOA in place, those associations can't do anything about things like endangered species, because at that point the national level of nature protection kicks in. In other words, even if you live in a HOA neighbourhood, if the association refuses to allow you to do this, i recommend "shopping" around for some local ecology/environment group and ask them about things like local protected species of bugs or plants or whatever, and ask them if they can help you setting a little grass island like this. Similar thing can be done for bats if they are in your area and you can apply for having a bat broodery/hybernation box installed in your garden for example. HOA can't do anything about this stuff. Once it's a part of some federally funded project, research, or protection, they are powerless.

From a landscaping perspective, if you put some sort of mesh pipe down in the ground in various spots, will the tree grow roots deeper because it’s getting oxygen there? And would this then mean it has more root mass? Hence more growth and healthier?

  • @GardenUPLandscape

I love planting these! In my city we have a program called "Flip your strip" that encourages people to take out the grass or weeds and plant something pretty and water-wise! The city is more interested in saving water than planting purley native, but there are lots of natives on their list of recommended plants ❤️

My township ordinance won’t allow vegetation in the 3-8 ft tall range within 15 ft of the street (for safety/visibility), so only shrubs and ground cover would work in my area.

Plain grass is a lot easier to maintain, this makes the sidewalk more claustrophobic and uncomfortable to navigate, and plus if that is street parking, it's a pain to get out of your car.

That’s awesome! We had one house in our town that had at least a cultivated garden instead of turf. This year it got turned into turf. I don’t know which would be worse: that they got old and it was too much work, that someone new moved in got rid of the flowers, or if the city finally enforced their ordinance.

My town limits height to less than 2.5 feet up on the strip which leaves space for some plantings with planning. The other thing is that I’m on a pretty busy road so I’m worry about birds and other wildlife getting hurt by getting startled while hunting

For me, we keep it low because people park there and it sucks to open your door and wipe out someone's bee balm. We have a tall grass next to the power pole to keep our clothes from bumping into the tarry pole, and that's all we have the spoons to do.
