I run Yamaha no problem but my commercial fishing buddies moved over to Mercury in the 115 to 150 hp range and swear by them. Fewer moving parts, bulletproof performance, light weight and very torquey and fuel efficient they say. Both are good engines, if I had to repower because the Yamaha died before i did i would give Mercury a shot.

Sounds like both brands are the "Toyotas" and "Hondas" of the outboard industry.

Bought a Tracker 175 pro V at the Detroit boat show this past winter. I had a choice of Mercury, Mercury, Mercury, or Mercury. I chose Mercury. So far, so good. 🙂

If you want an engine that has high revs, and a lot of power to race and you need speed and you’re not too worried about longevity, mercury is for you. If you want an engine that you could use today and put away this afternoon and not started or run it for three monthsYamaha is for you. Mercury doesn’t have necessarily the best track record for sitting idle for too long Yamaha does. And this is from personal experience.

Well... that was a pretty useless - comparison. It sounded like a guy just reading out the sales brochure from different manufacturers. It really didn't provide any useful information.

I've always owned Yamaha, and never had any issues with them at all. I'm 63 now, so don't see any reason to change, just keep them serviced and they will keep you on the water.

My nana sold her Yamaha 40 a couple yearb ago Had it for 20 year never had any problems

I owned a Yamaha 150 and it was a pos that was hard to start. I now own a mercury that can set up for months and fires up without a blip

Made In USA matters but if i had no choice but to go with a Japanese ENGINE IT WOULD BE Suzuki. great ENGINES FOR SOMETIMES HALF THE PRICE OF YAMAHA OR MERCURY

Yamaha copes with saltwater better, mercury is best freshwater motor. I have each. 2007 Merc 250 pro xs and a 2021 yamaha f70 as my 2000 yamaha c60 caved to saltwater. Yamaha parts are a pain as they dont offer kits like mercury does.

We had a bayliner with the alpha one 140 horse 4 cylinder 3.0 curborator , ran great very little service for 18 years .But now have a pontoon with a Yamaha outboard 50 four stroke , its a 04 model runs like a top very quiet .I have two Yamahas both over 20 years old super dependable .But having said that , the mercury alpha one was bullet proof as well , either one your good but maybe Yamaha by a hair , maybe not .

My vf150 SHO moves my 22’ pontoon boat quite well!

Mercury for Northern boats and bass boats (fast ones). Yamaha for Off shore ocean boats and commercial boats.

I have a 2012 150hp optimax pro xs 1yr freshwater on a ski boat ; the rest all skinny saltwater on a flats boat.No issues other than regular maintenance . I just recently purchased a new 2023 Mercury115hp xs to put on a new 18’ skiff that should draft 6”’s or less. We will offer Yamaha also with the new skiff we are manufacturing here in PALACIOS,Tx

We bought two boats a Alumacraft with Yamaha and a Lund with Mercury. The Mercury 150 didn't even make it through break in without blowing up. Warranty replaced it with a new engine after the computer verified that break in procedure was follwed. The engine failed due to a ChineseMade main bearing. Mercury may be made in America but the parts are outsourced fromChina. Yamaha is bulletproof. I will take Japan metalurgy over chineseJunk anyday.

A rebranded Stratos isnt in the same league as a Ranger, Bass Cat, Legend even a Triton for that matter.

I looked at the new skeeters , looked at the price , looked at all the boats , I have been a skeeter fan my entire life , but I can’t buy one , it’s not the money , it’s the quality,for the money , I’m not sold on the quality,, think I’m going to a different manufacturer ,

Suzuki has the best warranty and they will fix your motor first and work on warranty. Mercury will not work on their motors until they get the ok from factory and this can be Week or several months and I have a couple friends that have 2 fantastic tunnel boats with twin 450’s and they both say the same thing when we all get togather and cruse to the Bahamas they are the first ones there and the last one’s back . They have always have one motor throw codes and run at reduced power so they just trim the bad one up and run back on one motor and when the repower they go to Yamaha Or Suzuki and with Mercurys new 500R is suppose to have this all fixed on this new motor and they are waiting to see if it’s true .

Yamaha 250 SHO is an awesome engine.
