Modifications to the USMC Gen 3 Plate Carrier
Modifications to the USMC Gen 3 plate carrier.
This video will outline how to take the bulky issued USMC plate carrier and make it into something that’s less so.
You’ll only need:
-outer plate carrier and load-bearing panel
-cummerbunds of your choice, either the minimalist elastic ones or the structural ones
-shock tube
-needle-nose pliers
Front soulder strap tuck: 1:07
Soft and hard armor install: 2:02
LBV corner tuck: 3:14
Back shoulder strap tuck: 3:43
Cummerbund adjustment: 8:45
Final look: 10:49
*note*
If you choose to use the elastic cummerbunds, the visible portion of the stretchy elastic should be on the BACK plate bag. The velcro by the non-stretchy end of the cummerbunds should be at the FRONT. Also the laser cut molle on the elastic cummerbund should face inside your plate carrier, towards your ribs.
HUGE shoutouts to @localskinwalker and Josh Glomba for many of these ideas. One thing I love about the Marines is how like-minded folks can come together and share ideas in order to help out the force, instead of gatekeeping information. These guys generously gave permission for me to showcase some of their ideas in this video.
In future I’m going to create a video on aftermarket add-one that I integrated with my own issued Gen 3 carrier to really make it more usable and comfortable.
I’ll also make a series of videos that outline what gear setups made my life incredibly easier at each stage of my career so far: vehicle-borne rifleman, security forces, rifleman, team leader, squad leader, combat instructor and now acting platoon sergeant. I’ve had a few LTs ask so I’ll do one for y’all as well. I will also talk how your gear should adjust based upon your mission set.
Hope this video helps! I was planning to release this a long time ago but anyone in the military knows that the training never stops.
Stay lethal folks.

How were you able to mount your fixed knife to your chest rig? Looks like you used some sort of pouch. Product name???
The radio in question is the PRC-163 and whatever MBITR pouch you have "should work just fine. (Air quotes because the 163 does have a tapered shape too or) but I've never seen an MBITR pouch that won't fit it. The antenna relocater should also work just fine because the VHF & UHF antennas that it uses are the exact same.
Hi, what NVG pouch is that? Does it fit a PVS-14 with Jarm attached? Good video and setup, please keep at it.
What ammunition was used? Green tip, or steel tip M855A1? Or something else?
I did not know there was Gunny to MSGT for conversions. I always thought it was General to Major. I did not know coast matters. I always did land nav in the west coast.
How can we use this doctrine in real life challenges?
whats the name of the GP pouch on your belt
I don't understand how you manage to weave that shock tube through the molle at 10:21. my molle is so tight it was impossible to do this setup. Any advice?
Bend it the opposite way, thread the cord through the top and pull it the rest of the way through using a needle nose!
This is a great video thank you.
Not going to lie, I prefer the gen 2s
I think these things are fabulous! So much high technology and better protection! Let me tell ya… when I fought in Iraq in 2003, I was issued a steel plate that was placed inside of my vest and that was the only protection. This system looks light years ahead. Thanks for this video bud!
You are 100% correct, tech and gear have made huge advancements in the last 7 years or so. The issue I have with this stuff is that despite the USMC claiming to prioritize Warfighting and infantry, the gear we are given is catered to the ‘do-it-all’ mentality. Theres so much better stuff out there but we don’t get it because it doesn’t check all these unnecessary boxes the USMC imposes.
Based off this plate carrier this is an officer
No! This is a plate carrier that I borrowed from one of my PFCs for this video.
The cummerbund is such a huge mistep. Why in the hell is it two sizes bigger than whatever size it says on it?
The gen 3 was a horrible upgrade, if you can even call it that.
Still somehow better than most Army carriers…
@@GruntHacks I would say they are both equally shit. Not including the JPC or AVS which are some of the best on the market.
The JPC is good for direct action, AVS is WAY more durable and IMO the better choice for a grunt. But there’s even better carriers out there. I think the Eagle SPC reigns high
I remember when PDMICE/SYSCOM asked for recommendations on a posted prototype photo. They literally fielded the opposite of what combat arms NCOs asked for.
That’s because the USMC is not interested in Job specific equipment. They wanted a plate carrier that would check a ton of different boxes for a ton of different jobs and they got it. It’s mediocre at everything and good at nothing.
The more you mod it the more it looks like a Eagle SPC arguably the best issued plate carrier for all the non sof people.
I agree! Just wish the buckles were up front. That’s originally why they were phased out.
Wore one for two years at SOI
Im sure someone now can mod them to the front @@GruntHacks
Pro tip, tuck the zipper in the bottom and tape it up it so the sapis dont sag so they actually are placed properly
The zipper shouldn’t have anything to do with how the plates sit! Theres a smaller inner pouch for them to sit in so they should never touch the zipper part. See the portion of the video where I insert the plates!
what im saying is putting the plate into the plate bag the plates sag low to the molle on the plate carrier and to get the plate to the top of the plate bag i just taped the bottom to have it sit high
Are you referring to how the load bearing panel sits way higher than the plate goes?
What cumberbund do you run on this?
May I ask what chest rig placard is that?
Love the video man ! Semper Fi
What attachment are you using to marry the belt to the UBL?
If you look at the way you have it on the table at the beginning of the video there are 4 layers of belt and then a buckle. Seems like a lot of unnecessary bulk.
What’s the size range in inches for this large belt?
The belt seems super legit, but I want their 320 holster for my grenadiers super bad
Yeah I’m still doing my review on it but once I’m done I’ll make a video about it
Looking forward to a detailed breakdown of what he takes in his medbag. I was an 8404 corpsman back in the day for one enlistment. I’d like to see someone who is more experienced and how to set up there med bag and if they need a separate assault pack as well.
I've got a friend who's going through the PJ pipeline right now and we chat about his kit all the time. There is a huge focus on airway and he has a giant pouch dedicated to NPAs, OPAs, crich kits and needle decompression.
What an awesome video bro.
army clears trench with red long flag pole behind their backs. i think its give away for enemy throw grenade or underbarrel grenade lanucher.what you think about that ?
I think there are better ways however, if it works, it works. Combat always forces the hand of adaption. So we may see that change
What sound mod do you have if it's not private ?
Sound mod? I’d have to take a look but I don’t think I changed anything

That’s weird that they won’t let you wear it.
that's cool and all but what map is that?
It’s a Ukrainian map from the steam workshop
@@GruntHacks thank you, love you. learned alot from just one video alone.
FINALLY As a shitty low tier larper airsofter... Ive been wating for a kit setup that's medic centric like this. God bless.
I'm in the same boat but I'm also a paramedic in real life and I do want to have medical available for larger events. People always twisting their ankles and dislocating their shoulders.
@@FlankerJackChannel so real. Also, best wishes with your paramedic career. I just became an EMT-B last year! I figure, take my job skills on the fun day airsoft field.
@@nekokyun Good for you pal it's the beginning of a fun journey. I started as an EMT a few years ago making a big career change. Paramedic you just got to have more fun. As far as airsoft goes, having a few basic first aid items is always good but definitely pack sports injury type kit. Sam splints, Ace bandages, gauze and triangular bandages. Last milsim event I went on the first hour a guy's broke his ankle going over some rocks and it took a few minutes to get him evacuated. Reach out if you have any questions or help

very nice
Thank you brother 🤙🏽
Given the lack of success Ukraine has had in its nato trained forces I do t think it’s anything to really reciprocate necessarily. And like always these tactics work for this war not applicable for the next.
Awesome video. “Read the enemy effects!” Thanks for this.
I remember taking the sling off a SMAW fiber and replacing my strap with it. Lol it stayed that way for three years.
This method takes on more violence of action and speed on target but definitely assumes the SBF is very accurate and effective to the point where the enemy isn't noticing they are about to be flanked/no flank security exists for these guys as you really have to make a subjective call on when assault fires should occur as a shoot on the move principle.
We all know every approach is METT-TC dependent, although a WSL and their Team Leaders should have their asses well in hand and be effective on objective. There's a reason Weapons Squad is supposed to get first pick of men and hefty training time: if your SBF sucks ass then your rifle squads are going to have to work way too hard to even get to the objective when it's already supposed to be softened up and suppressed.
I think carrying 3 full 15mg zyn cans in those front three elastic pouches can benefit the squad
Very good way to show it. Thanks

Just trying to help out where I can 🤘🏽
Thank you for your information and insight.
Thanks for watching!
Great vid bud! Liked the use of arma as a tool to show tactics.
Thank you!
had an idea today: Could you sew in some sort of knee-pad insert on the inside of the MARPAT trousers you use in the field (def wouldn't be sat in garrison, but may be the field)? I hate standard knee pads that strap around the knee since they just don't stay up.
Your IFAK looks awful and I had to chastise you
How do you carry water when not using a pack?
Never not have the pack
On the warbelt, you can not occupy one of the magazine pouches with mags and insert a 350ml titanium mug and a tourist bottle suitable in diameter instead. it is better under the right hand, because everything on the left should be filled with mags (if you are right-handed). There are excellent closed pouches for 3 AK mags, the Russian company SSO makes them. It fits in there normally. A double pouch for magazines will not work, only a slender one with a removed partition accommodating 3 pieces of 5.45 mm mags
Damn that lane is flat as fuck. So lucky.
Keep kicking ass, love seeing what y'all's unit is accomplishing. Truly a driving force for innovation across the Corps' infantry units - your brothers in 1/5
awesome content!! what helmet cameras you using?

@@GruntHacks would you recommend someone to go infrantry or reconnaissance first?
this made me realize just how much suppressors help for coordination, even when most of the line is engaging you can still clearly hear voices and such
very cool content. Its awesome to see footage of ranges with actual context of what is going on as opposed to weird incoherent gang bangs of b roll slapped together.
