Hey John, this is so great! I have a client who reacts very defensive to the idea of turning against a part of him - he has done IFS before and believes his parts need to be all welcomed. How would you address that?

This is a powerful and compassionate approach to helping people psychologically integrate and heal. I can see elements of Internal Family Systems, mind-body coaching and ontological coaching in it, especially with Danvaloo's departure from a pathological model and steering toward potential, or in the coaching world, possibility. Would this be badgering the client? Badgering could lead to shaming self? Another way may be to provoke them to explore this self-destructive pattern, pressure them to examine what would happen if they don't engage in this pattern. Perhaps they have just been made aware of this, and they can curiously explore the triangle of conflict together with you.

Thanks so much for making this video available. I couldn't make the live event but am delighted to be able to listen to it in my own time. Jonathan correctly asserts that the therapeutic alliance is essential for effective psychotherapy. That said, the research suggests that the alliance is just as often there result of therapeutic work as it is its predecessor. This is where Davanloo's work on D and R, from the start, are so helpful in removing barriers to a truly therapeutic alliance. In particular, character defenses will prevent the establishment of a therapeutic alliance. We must work to remove these defenses so an alliance can be formed.
