The Columbia Climate School
The climate crisis is one of the greatest threats facing humanity. In response, Columbia University established the nation's first climate school in 2020 to educate future climate leaders, support groundbreaking research, and foster essential climate solutions from the community to the planetary scale.

    Nice animation, but the amount of _"sunlight falling on Earth's surface"_ is not _"driven by its orbit and orientation towards the sun."_ You're referring to Milankovitch cycles, and, over timespans of tens to hundreds of thousands of years, Milankovitch cycles have been the "principal control knob" for climate. But their agency is indirect, via the intermediate mechanism of ice sheet advance & retreat. Milankovitch cycles do not change the amount of energy which the Earth receives from the Sun, and they don't directly  change Earth's average temperature. Rather, they change *_seasonality,_* which is the distribution of the energy which the Earth receives from the Sun, over seasons, at various latitudes. When seasonality increases, warmer summers increase ice loss at the margins of the great Laurentide, Cordilleran & Fennoscandian ice sheets, and colder winters decrease snowfall on those ice sheets. When seasonality increases by enough to cause ice sheets to retreat each year, the reduced ice coverage causes an increase in globally averaged temperatures (a/k/a "global warming," a general warming trend). Conversely, when seasonality decreases by enough to cause ice sheets to advance, that causes a general cooling trend. It's the covering and uncovering of vast expanses of the Earth with ice which changes its average temperature. Milankovitch cycle effects are often approximated by calculating solar insolation at 65°N latitude. But that isn't really correct. What matters is whether the great northern ice sheets are advancing or retreating, and what determines that is seasonality at the edges of the ice sheets. At the start of a glaciation, as the ice sheets begin to advance, it's more like 70°N. But at glacial maxima, as the ice sheets start to retreat, it's closer to 50°N. There are other factors at work, too. For example, the covering of land by advancing ice sheets sequester organic carbon, and cooling oceans sequester CO2, so atmospheric CO2 levels fall during glaciations. That's a positive feedback, which has a cooling effect as glaciers advance, and a warming effect as they retreat. That positive feedback contributes to the observed hysteresis between glaciated and deglaciated states. Additionally, other factors cause large shorter duration warming and cooling events, like Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles. The current best theory is that they were probably caused mostly by ocean circulation changes, caused by ice sheets altering freshwater discharge paths.

    2:50 The blue color of the Quartz in Llanite is believed to be due to Ilmenite, not Rutile. Ilmenite's formula is FeTiO^3, so it is not an Oxide. Titanium Oxide can actually form 3 different Species: Anatase, Brookite, and Rutile. Why he failed to mentioned that, I don't know.

    A product used from indirect capture of an emittant is gypsum which is taken from coal scrubbers to make sheetrock, a valuable building material. I would point out to the audience that when sites like these promote that combusting something else puts out something good instead, let me point out, when you combust a hydrocarbon, you still get co2--whether it comes from gasoline, or burning biochar, or burning natural gas, or burning animal dung. You still get CO2.

  • @kimlibera663
    @kimlibera663 Před rokem

    This is really incorrect earth science to say that a gas causes the climate to change. There are several avenues that comprise weather but co2 does not cause air pressure systems to generate, fronts, the direction & speed of the jetstream, wind currents, & ocean currents. CO2 is a greenhouse gas & it pales in contrast to water vapor-that is the thermodynamics & I should know I ve had that course. They want to say co2 because you can't very well promote all the water on earth to evaporate.
