The home of the founder of Winston was not the place you showed. In truth, it is still occupied and is both large and ornate for the era in which it was built. Other than that, interesting footage to see as I've relations living near there and some buried too in the cemetery south of Chloride.

I grew up in Manistee and had heard a lot about Idlewild. A few years ago, a friend and I drove out there to see what it looked like after its heyday. When I lived in Chicago, there was a big buzz about a group of business owners had joined financial forces to bring Idlewild back to life. Unfortunately, they ran out of money after putting a visitor center and museum there. We also noted that there are a few houses that are inhabited, but the majority were not - urban decay had been settling there for a long time. The streets were laid out in a precise grid - I had no idea that it was so big. There is talk again about revitalizing the area - and I hope that this time, it is successful in its endeavor. So much history is there, and the stories need to be kept alive for future generations. Great video - thank you so very much. 😊

My grandparents lived in Magdalena. My grandpa worked in the Kelly Mines, I have pictures that were taken of him working in the mines when he was 35 years old. Very cool pictures. Magdalena and Kelly are where my ancestral roots come from! Great video!

I have heard that there is an ongoing effort to restore at least some of the buildings to preserve history. I wish them luck in the endeavor.

I've been in many of them old houses they are creepy got chased down by wild dogs once there and also came face to face with a cugar while walking around hunting in the woods and a few bears

The Coaling Station was still in use as late as 1953/54. Yes, Steam Locomotives were still pulling freight in the early 1950's, Diesel's were already in use, but they had not entirely taken over from the Steam Engine. In Jan. of 1961 just before I left Mich. City for the U.S. Army I saw several Steam Engines sitting on side tracks at the old New Buffalo, Mich. Roundhouse near the corner of Hwy. 39 & Wilson Rd. on the Wilson Rd. side waiting to be scrapped. When I returned from Germany in June of 1963 they were all gone.

The Gym / lunchroom, my second grade classroom above the second floor and the auditorium all those place bring back memories.

My great grandfather and his brothers and sisters all attended St. Albertus School and were parishioners there. My great great grandfather brought his family to America in April 1881 and settled in that area of Poletown.

Thanks for taking the time ti visit and film this historical town. Spent lots of time around Balwin when I was on summer vacations as a youngster. The GR pbs aired an excellent series about the history of Idlewild some 30 + years ago. I can imagine knowing the property tax laws that most of the property went into default, I see property for sale at reasonable prices now and then. Another real ghost town from around 1890 is Park City which is off M37 just south of Brohman, MI. Its next to the PM railroad and has lots of home and business foundations, basements.

I say HA.HA.HA. I live three miles from there my whole life. I played on the foundation of the house when I was a kid. We use to party ther back before they put up that gate. The late seventies early eighties. The boy scouts use to camp there. There is a story about the demise of house but I never heard any about a witch. But hell its your story Your facts.
