DIY rope making top- the "poor man's" top
zhlédnutí 1KPřed 3 měsíci
In this video we make a rope making top. It is used to spread apart strands while twisting rope. It travels by itself through the rope, eliminating the need for a person to spread the strands using a paddle/divider. Due to not needing a lathe to make this top, it is quite a decent, simple tool. Happy rope making!

Rope making

On this windy, cloudy day two friends attempt to demonstrate how rope is made. Naturally there are many ways, the important thing is to get a quality result at the end. And the result was a nice, hard laid, stiff cord- so mission accomplished! We used a 3 hook, geared rope making machine made by...us :). The yarn is linen weaving yarn. We also sell rope making machines on our website: zenropewo...

      @zenropeworks Před 21 dnem

      Honestly, size of the top does not matter that much. You are best to try it out and see if it works for you. There are few real rules in rope making, since we all use relatively custom machines and setups.

      @@zenropeworks fair enough, i wasnt sure if it mattered if the top was larger than the hooks or something. Now to entirely overcomplicate it!

    A beautiful piece! It uses knots that I'm very familiar with and have used many times before. I'm not sure about the 20 mins claim as it would take me much longer than that. But with me it's a pastime and so it doesn't matter how long it takes me. I'm a great fan of spiral hitching as it's so simple but highly decorative. I have covered many bottles with just that. The Footrope knot variation is interesting as normally I do it with 4 strands: Crown knot, Wall knot and then go around 3 times but in this one, you basically go around once but with 3 strands at the same time. Very interesting!
