    It turned out different than the samples because you sanded them differently. The actual table top was probably sanded more thoroughly than the samples.

      I thought that might have happened, but I think that would have resulted in the sample being darker rather than lighter. If I had to speculate I’d guess I left the dye on longer for the actual piece which gave it more time to soak in

    This green dye is inspired genius. It was such a Baller move to scrape it and then re-dye it. Respect! If the wood isn’t bending to your will - keep working it. The table came out beautifully. My heart broke when you showed the tornado damage. I think the table came out unscathed because you put so much love into it. I’m not a fan of stains or even dye except in rare cases or small amounts, however there can be too much of a good thing and sometimes solid wood builds can get a bit heavy especially if in your house you build everything yourself and later realize there’s too much brown. It hurt to see the mahogany color go just because it was beautiful however you did it tastefully, the grain showed through which is why I hate stains usually as grain can be lost especially with gel based stains but I think this was a nice idea. If you have a bathroom vanity where you want a pop of color while showing off the fact that you built something from solid hardwood, I think that green would be stunning and make for a unique piece. Or add it to a cabinet door, I can also see it being awesome for kids furniture and if someone loves patterned plywood with skateboard material perhaps dying your own veneer pieces would be a better option than hunting for retired skateboards which in my area are difficult to find. I love the concept, the table turned out great and I’m so sorry about your home and shop! I live in literally the heartland in sw KS and tornadoes are a real fear of mine too. I hope you can quickly have whatever needs rebuilt done and perhaps if adding on was a dream this made it possible but I’m glad you’re ok! In the 60’s my Mom was little when a tornado skipped over the neighbors and landed on their house ripping it apart. She has never forgotten how loud or terrifying and damaging it was. Stay safe and look forward to future content

  • @Curly_Maple
    @Curly_Maple Před měsícem

    The problem wasn't the maple. It was how you dyed it. If you watch how guitar makers dye maple, they dont just hit it with one color. For this, they'd probably dye it black first. Then sand it back a bit before the green - maybe even another color in between. I don't understand it all fully, but the difference it makes is huge. It could have looked as good as the mahogany - maybe even better. But yours came out great in the end. Well done.

    • @alteredgraincustoms9891
      @alteredgraincustoms9891 Před měsícem

      I appreciate it! It could have been a lack of skill on my part, but on all those maple samples, I tried a variety different dyes, sanding, and then more dye. I wasn’t able to achieve anything that looked nice on the plain maple, but I loved the look of just the green dye on mahogany!

    • @richardgray9491
      @richardgray9491 Před 12 dny

      @@alteredgraincustoms9891. The trick to staining maple is to use water dye stain only, apply it with a spray gun and do not wipe it off. Wiping makes it blotchy. For future reference, you'll get a more consistent color between your samples and your actual work if you apply your dye stain with a gun. You made a smart move by using a water-based dye instead of alcohol. Water is slower drying which makes is easier to control. Practice makes perfect. Good luck.

    The woodworking on this table looks fantastic! If you want to get vibrant colors that make your piece “pop” you need to stop using stain or staying alone.
