Can I Trade £20 to a Black Opal by Flipping Gemstones?
Can I trade my way up from an initial £20 investment to a Black Opal by flipping gemstones?
As a Gemologist, it should come as no surprise that I like gemstones but one gem that I don't own is a Black Opal and I thought it was about time that I bought myself one!
And rather than just buying one, I wondered if I could trade my way to one by buying and selling gemstones?

    I am considering a second career after retirement and interested in working in a gem lab, maybe 10-15 years from now. Do you think this is work that would survive the next 20 years, are there aspects that you think may become automated?

    • @HaywoodsJewellery
      @HaywoodsJewellery Před 6 měsíci

      Very difficult to say (as with many careers at the moment), I still think there will be a strong human element as many parts have subtleties such as identifying inclusions to see whether the stone is natural or synthetic and potential origin will be very difficult to automate.

  • @Opal.Workshop
    @Opal.Workshop Před 8 měsíci

    Its a dark blue opal, not crystal. The price you paid is fine, especially as an international buyer who doesn't have access to field prices, crystal is when you can see through the stone when you hold up to the light , it looks yellow or orange when its crystal in saturated light.

    Hi, can I ask if Gemology is typically reliable in terms of money and jobs? I am a junior in highschool and personally my dream is to be a Gemologist, but I know I need to apply soon if I need to choose something else. I have a lot of health problems and I’m mostly worried about the reliability of being able to take care of myself and my disabled sister. I have looked for jobs nearby, but the nearest are almost 4 hours away. I am just very concerned that it might not be a good option for me. Can you offer any advice on perhaps finding Gemology jobs and whether it offers financial stability?

      Hi, I've done a video covering this (czcams.com/video/BfIVOFlQe00/video.html) as a follow-up to this one and there are very few gemologist jobs, it is more that there are careers where gemology is a useful skill to have but if financial stability is your primary concern, I think there are better career options out there such as medical, mental health or legal.

      Hi, honestly, the most important skills are interpersonal and being able to sell and believe it or not, most people who work on the retail side have very little jewellery/gem knowledge before starting and learn on the job (depending on how good the employer’s training is). Gemology isn’t required but can be very helpful and when combined with the ability to sell is a very useful skill set.

    That cats-eye quartz is pretty, I don't blame you for keeping it! Is it alright to ask how you actually went about selling the stones? Flipping stones seems straightforward, but if one were to try something like this how would they actually go about it? Great vids, been looking into field gemology and possibly trading/retail as a potential career path so it's nice having information from someone knowledgeable in this stuff.

    • @HaywoodsJewellery
      @HaywoodsJewellery Před 2 lety

      It is a lovely little stone. I sell directly through trade groups that I'm part of as I was a retailer for quite a few years. It seems straightforward but it is a little more difficult than people realise as the gem/jewelry trade is very much based on trust, reputation and building relationships. Gemology is awesome and there are some great opportunities out there as long as you are prepared to put in the work and keep on learning.

      @@HaywoodsJewellery I just saw your "Identifying Gemstones From a Picture" video and thought to ask: Do you test every stone before you retail it? I'd love to see more videos from you!

    • @tropchop
      @tropchop Před 2 lety

    • @HaywoodsJewellery
      @HaywoodsJewellery Před 2 lety

      No problem and thank you for watching my videos. Yea, I test every stone, whether I buy it as part of a job lot or from a dealer as I like to be sure in my own mind that it is what I say it is. It depends where you are based as different countries have different rules but in a lot of cases, it would fall under mis-selling as it has been falsely described. The best way to cover yourself is to get a report from a reputable gem lab but for cheaper stones, this can be uneconomical. I do plan to make more videos, it is just finding the time to do it.

    Thanks for the really helpful examples Paul! I never thought about pawn shops. Talking more about being a bench jeweler or stone setter sounds like a really good video topic that I would love to learn more about. How many years were you a stone setter before deciding to be a gemologist? Another topic that I am facing now is online vs on campus. Obviously you'll have more hands on time and may learn a lot from in-person interactions not possible online...but if it gets you graduated and in the industry, the trade offs still seem worth it.

    • @HaywoodsJewellery
      @HaywoodsJewellery Před 2 lety

      Thanks Dave and I'm glad you found the video helpful. Yea, pawn shops are great for seeing lots of stones and lots of valuers/appraisers start off in pawn shops. I was a gemologist before I started learning stone setting and I do want to do more jewelry related videos, I just need to find the time! I would recommend doing campus training as experience is very important, I did 3 years part time and seeing stones every week made a huge difference and it will translate into the workplace as you just feel more comfortable in what you are doing.

I graduated with a BSc. in Earth Science here in the US, where I spent a lot of time in the lab with minerals.
