    reading about all of Jeremiah's tribulations, you wonder if God wrote a job description for a prophet, if anyone would apply . I mean, although a tax collector would be equally despised, at least they would have protection from authorities, a decent wage, and maybe a dental plan. what benefits do the prophets get?

      @brynjoslin Před 4 měsíci

      I'm sorry to hear about your injury. That's tough, particularly if it's impacting your ability to read the Bible. My best trick to understanding the Big picture is to always try to root what you've read each day into the wider narrative of the book. That's what I try and do with the recap in these videos. Another great tool is the BibleProject overview videos and posters. I tend to have one of those at hand so when I'm reading a passage I can always see where we are in the story. I also think part of it is recognising this is a lifetime journey. We spend our whole lives reading and slowly, little by little, building upon our understanding. I'm rooting for you and glad to have you on this journey as we work through the Bible in a year

    Hey Bryn, Still really enjoying your Bible in a year stuff. Today found your comments on the Moabite human sacrifice seeming to appease God's wrath really helpful. Always found that verse hard to make sense of. Also, any thoughts on the significance of Elijah retracing Israel's steps on his journey?

    • @brynjoslin
      @brynjoslin Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks Jonah! It means a lot. I think there are a couple of things to it. Firstly, by being a subtle nod to that journey the Israelites made many hundreds of years before it causes the reader to stop and think about how far Israel has come (or fallen) in that time. So in that sense it serves as a meditative prompt to the reader. In perhaps a second sense, by Elijah travelling to the other side of the Jordan before handing over to Elisha, it means that Elisha has to recross the Jordan to go back into Israel. So Elisha then represents a new start into the land for the people. At the place Moses handed authority over to Joshua, Elijah is now passing authority to Elisha.

  • @davidjoslin5830
    @davidjoslin5830 Před 5 měsíci

    Saul always comes across as impulsive with poor emotional regulation. it makes you wonder what his upbringing was like? The bible never mentions his mother. It is clear throughout the bible and life that we are not all born with the same 'hand of cards'. Do you think God takes this into consideration on judgment day? or are we all judged by the same standard , as in a court of law?

    I think todays readings are a reminder to us that if we don’t cut things out of our lives that take us away from God entirely, they always creep back in and eventually put us in a worse place than before. It’s so important to listen to those who have gone before us and keep their wisdom close!

    In Jude 1v9, we see this strange entry of Satan and the angel Michael fighting over Moses' body. Why is it not mentioned here, in Deuteronomy ?

    • @brynjoslin
      @brynjoslin Před 5 měsíci

      It may just be that it didn't fit with what the narrator of Deuteronomy was trying to communicate. Remember, these writers aren't trying to tell history as we know it. They're trying to communicate theological ideas through Israel's history. We also don't have any written reference to what Jude 1:9 mentions. There is no 2nd Temple literature that says that the devil and Michael fought over Moses' body. Clement of Alexandria claims Jude was quoting a work called the Assumption of Moses, but it's not in any copies we have. It may just be an oral tradition that wasn't written down anywhere but was a story that Jews told one another that Jude is referring to

      @davidjoslin5830 Před 5 měsíci

    One thing that stood out to me was Deuteronomy 9:7 where it says ‘remember and do not forget…’ Does the Hebrew make a distinction between the act of remembrance and forgetting? The way it’s written in English makes it seem like forgetting is the result of not actively remembering. Potentially showing the importance for regular reminders of God’s faithfulness (regular traditional practice and festivals). What do you think?

    Another book down! The point you made explaining the difference between individual choice and people doing best for the tribe is so important. Knowing that unlocks so much of what we’re reading

    50 days down! I wonder if we can sometimes be like the the tribes of Reuben and Gad, choosing to settle rather than to go into the promises of God. Hindsight is a wonderful thing😅

    Hi Bryn do you have any more information on the umin and thurmin please?

      It's a great question. They were basically a God ordained way of flipping a coin to decide things, but maybe a little more complicated than that. Some reckon they are quite similar to a coin toss, where the ummin and thumin are a pair of stones with that said yes and the other that said no. Some argue that they were a bag of tiles with letters on, like scrabble, and that the high priest would reach into and pull out three that would spell a word. Still othersa argue they were more like dice with symbols that signfiy different things. Whichever way they worked, the idea was that they were used by the High Priest and that God spoke to his people through them. They were use a number of times in the Bible to decide on matters

    I’m always struck by Numbers 11:23 - ‘has my arm lost its power?’ God is quick to remind us of his faithfulness, even in times where we are ungrateful or forgetful of his provision.

    Appreciate your honesty! Praying that ultimately we can grow closer to God in the middle of struggling with some of the things in his word

    I like the instruction of keeping God physically in the centre. I think we can often be like that - if anyone else is like me they won’t have a good track record of keeping God in the centre. So, God makes it clear, and ensures the right measures are in place. The instructions God gives us help us keep him in the centre. Structure and order isn’t a bad thing, sometimes we need it!

    A few thoughts from today: - Passive leadership steers people towards destructive actions. Passive leaders allow people to feed their desire for instant gratification, which often leads to a worse future. Aaron, out of everyone should have been firm in keeping people focused on God. It’s a challenge for us to be firm on what we know to be true, regardless of whether our reality matches up or not. - I find it fascinating how the people were so quick to forget who delivered them. Are we only intent on getting closer to God when eyes are on us? Psalm 103:2 tells us to forget not all his benefits - we need to be active in our remembrance of God’s goodness, lest we forget. When we forget what God has done, and even who he is, the goalposts move, leading us to acting in ways which are not in line to who we claim to be. My prayer based on all of this is that I would always be someone who stands firm in faith, regardless of circumstances, and that I would always be strengthened to do so.

      Yeah man. Sometimes you got to tell people no! And the absolute madness that just a few chapter before the Israelites agreed to the covenant and then bailed on it

    One thing that stood out to me was Exodus 30:15 - no one’s offering is worth any more than anyone else’s. God levels the playing field, and welcomes us all equally. I can’t buy my way to blessing Also like your thoughts on excellence!
