No Apologies with Katherine Brodsky
We as a society are self-censoring at record rates. Say the wrong thing at the wrong moment to the wrong person and the consequences can be dire. Think that everyone should be treated equally regardless of race? You're a racist who needs to be kicked out of the online forum that you started. Do you believe there are biological differences between men and women? You're a sexist who should be fired with cause. Argue that people should be able to speak freely within the bounds of the law? You're a fascist who should be removed from your position of authority. When the truth is no defense and nuance is seen as an attack, self-censorship is a rational choice. Yet, our silence comes with a price. When we are too fearful to speak openly and honestly, we deprive ourselves of the ability to build genuine relationships, we yield all cultural and political power to those with opposing views, and we lose our ability to challenge ideas or change minds, even our own.
In Katherine Brodsky’s book, No Apologies: How to Find and Free Your Voice in the Age of Outrage-Lessons for the Silenced Majority, released earlier this year, she argues that it's time for principled individuals to hit the unmute button and resist the authoritarians among us who name, shame, and punish. It’s to push back against the dangerous illiberalism of the vocal minority that tolerates no dissent- and to find and free our own voices in the process.
Brodsky has spent two years researching and interviewing those who have been subjected to public harassment and abuse for daring to transgress the new orthodoxy or criticize a new taboo. In this lecture, she will share some of those experiences as well as the motivation and journey behind writing the book in the first place-including her evolving views on the landscape of intolerance, how it affects areas like science, arts, academia, and so much more, and the creeping authoritarian speech laws that have found a stronghold on so many countries around the world.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:25 *🎉 The event promises an engaging discussion on decolonization with distinguished panelists and interactive audience participation.* 02:16 *📘 Prof. Doug Stokes is introduced, highlighting his expertise in military, security, and energy issues, and his critical examination of the decolonization of British universities.* 03:12 *📚 Stokes’ book criticizes the decolonization movement in British universities, described as absurd yet influential, and potentially damaging.* 05:37 *🇬🇧 A contrast is drawn between the UK's successful multiculturalism and its self-critical university culture that Stokes argues exaggerates issues of prejudice.* 07:41 *📈 The discussion addresses a significant increase in media references to racism and white supremacy over the last decade, suggesting a shift towards progressive politics driven by moral panics.* 10:24 *🚫 The narrative moves to describe the authoritarian methods used in universities to address alleged racism, comparing them to tactics reminiscent of the Soviet Union.* 14:18 *✝️ A parallel is drawn between current ideological movements and the Puritan desire for societal and self-purification, suggesting a secularized form of Protestant extremism.* 18:46 *🔄 The conversation turns to discussing the millenarian aspect of modern ideologies, depicting a desire for a disruptive transformation towards an idealized society.* 20:26 *📚 Stokes explains the historical shift from Marxism to a focus on culture and identity, tracing how radical theory in the West evolved towards current ideologically driven movements.* 23:40 *🧠 The importance of returning to a belief in objective reality is emphasized, challenging postmodern relativism to validate the significance of scientific realism.* 24:06 *🔄 The significance of acknowledging material reality is emphasized, countering subjective perceptions shaping societal discourse.* 24:33 *🛡️ A call for reclaiming reality against relativism, vital for maintaining structured knowledge and authority within society.* 25:27 *🌍 The unexpected mainstream emergence of postmodern theories, initially deemed too abstract for widespread adoption, highlights a shift in public discourse.* 27:17 *🏛️ A critique of the monocultural perspectives prevailing in humanities and social science departments, likening their theoretical frameworks to "academic theology."* 29:26 *🔍 Discussion on how technocracy utilizes the identification and management of sociopolitical "risks" like racism or sexism for asserting control.* 31:01 *🔄 Proposes that efforts to "decolonize" in the UK might represent a new form of ideological colonization, particularly from American moral panics.* 32:08 *🇺🇸 Reflects on how UK societal issues often import American racial discourses, influencing domestic narratives and tensions.* 34:38 *❓ Raises the question of the permanence of decolonization efforts, suggesting these movements serve more as vehicles for asserting power than achieving specific end goals.* 36:56 *💥 Critiques the "woke" movement as fundamentally about power and control, rather than genuine concern for societal improvement or justice.* 39:17 *🏭 Discusses the abandonment of the working class by left-wing movements, shifting focus onto middle-class priorities over traditional class struggles.* 44:57 *🔄 Suggests that "woke" ideology might serve as a byproduct of neoliberalism, diverting attention from economic grievances to moral and identity issues.* 45:53 *🌀 Wokeness may serve as a camouflage for neoliberal capitalism, sidestepping systemic economic critique by focusing on identity politics.* 47:29 *🗣️ The criticism of populism and disinformation management often targets legitimate grievances against the consequences of neoliberal policies.* 49:08 *📘 The distinction is made between the political processes of decolonization and the rise of decolonization ideology within academic contexts.* 50:19 *📚 Calvinism's deep sense of sinfulness and humility differs significantly from modern ideological movements' lack of humility.* 51:58 *🔄 Wokeness could be interpreted as a form of hyper liberalism, focusing on the individual's self-affirmation through consumption and identity politics.* 53:45 *🌍 The anglophone world strongly manifests the ideologies discussed, with France showing resistance due to its authoritarian leanings, despite being the birthplace of many foundational theorists of such philosophies.* 55:20 *📈 The impetus for climate concern and ideological movements appears predominantly in Protestant nations, suggesting a cultural rather than universal basis.* 57:31 *🏛️ Violent decolonization and anti-neocolonial stances have often led to worse outcomes for countries, challenging the narratives of certain ideological movements.* 59:21 *🔄 European-centric critique in decolonization theory minimizes the agency and history of non-European civilizations, displaying a form of Eurocentric narcissism.* 01:07:01 *🎭 The performative aspect of acknowledging privilege, especially among the socio-economic elite, often lacks genuine sacrifice or change, highlighting superficial engagement with the ideologies purportedly supported.* 01:08:34 *📉 Highlighting a growing disconnect between ordinary people and privileged media pushing ideological narratives, jeopardizing the social contract.* 01:10:11 *🚨 Warning of potential massive reactions in Western politics due to the erosion of core values and tolerance by ideological extremism.* 01:11:19 *🎭 Discusses social status and the power of choosing to appear powerless as a sign of actual systemic power.* 01:13:58 *🔄 Introducing complex narratives about the history of slavery to challenge one-dimensional views on Western guilt and imperialism.* 01:19:09 *🗣️ Pondering the impact of alternative voices and podcasts in challenging mainstream ideological narratives and promoting diversity of thought.* 01:21:00 *❓ Questioning the conservative government's effectiveness in countering pervasive "woke" ideologies despite having the evidence to do so.* 01:21:55 *🛠️ Urging a philosophical and value reboot for the conservative party to better defend Western civilization and address the needs of working-class people.* 01:26:47 *🌏 Speculating on the West's ability to restore its cultural foundations to maintain geopolitical power, contrasting with traditional values strengthening Russia and China.* 01:28:34 *💔 Addressing the dangers of undermining civilizational confidence through constant cultural and political self-negation.* Made with HARPA AI

The US and its allies does not recognize the legitimacy of the Chinese government and will use all possible means to change it. China is reacting to each U.S. action. It is considered impolite to not reciprocate. Following the September 11, 2001 attack, the U.S. shifted attention from China to the Middle East, easing China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in December 2001. As China emerged as the "world's factory," producing inexpensive goods that lowered global inflation, central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, maintained low-interest rates, fostering excessive leveraging in the U.S. and Europe. This, coupled with risky financial practices and the housing market's collapse, led to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. Despite feeling unsettled by China's economic growth, the United States actively pursued financial support from China, for China to continue purchasing U.S. Treasury bills. In 2011, Obama proposed the "Pivot to Asia" strategy, which shifted the focus of US foreign policy from the Middle East to Asia. This, along with the wargaming of a sea blockade of Chinese commercial ships on a global scale, the formation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which deliberately excluded China, the establishment of a 2500-strong US marine air-ground task force in Darwin, and an increase in the rotation of both US Air Force planes and US Navy vessels through Australian bases, alarmed the Chinese leadership. Unable to remain passive, hide their strength, and bide their time, Xi Jinping was selected as the leader of China in 2013 to make China more secure. These included the establishment of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the Belt and Road initiative, and the building of artificial islands in the South China Sea. In 2015 the "Made in China 2025" initiative was announced. These policies directly responded to the perceived threat posed by the "Pivot to Asia" strategy. No country is excluded from joining the AIIB or the Belt and Road Initiative. Obama's intentions were clarified when he responded to Xi Jinping's proposal on September 25, 2015, to make the South China Sea (SCS) a non-militarized zone by initiating freedom of navigation operations in the SCS on October 27, 2015. Japan and the Philippines are cornerstones of the strategy to keep Asia poor and divided. This policy is articulated in the top-secret U.S. Foreign Policy written 76 years ago. February 24, 1948, Declassified U.S. Foreign Policy: Furthermore, we have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. ... that Japan and the Philippines will be found to be the corner-stones of such a Pacific security system and that if we can contrive to retain effective control over these areas there can be no serious threat to our security from the East within our time. Taiwan was added to the Pacific security system after Chiang's army retreated to the island of Taiwan in 1949. South Korea was added after the Korean War in 1953. The attempt with Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia was abandoned in 1975. The 1989 attempt in China failed. The 2019-2020 attempt in Hong Kong also failed. The US makes the rules, and the US and their friends do not have to follow these rules. Since WWII, the United States has started 201 wars, overthrew 36 foreign leaders, killed or attempted to kill 50, dropped bombs in 30 countries, and interfered in 86 foreign elections. To make the world safe for democracy, the US has caused the deaths of tens of millions of people in its conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria. The CIA was involved in covert operations that resulted in mass killings of communists in over 22 countries, 500,000 to 2,000,000 Indonesian civilians disappeared in 1965-1966. The 'Arsenal of Democracy' produces 40 percent of the world's weapons. It is a very profitable business model in which other countries buy these weapons to fight each other. The key is maximizing profits without shedding US blood by inducing conflicts between and within countries outside the USA. One client is eager to spend AUD 368 billion to buy a few high-quality used nuclear-powered submarines. This business model's critical components are NATO, QUAD, ANZUS, Five Eyes, AUKUS, and MCC (Mutual Cross-Service Agreement).

No mention of made in China 2025 with China de-coupling plan. China wants to dominate critcally stratigic industries. Western countries want to protect their domestic critical industries - hence de-risking. China has moved from prioritising economic growth to security, others are now following. The world is now dealing with Xi's China not Deng's. No criticism of Russian invasion. He stresses the point there is no ideology confrontation but there is such a confrontation between the autocratic, led by China and democratic, led by America. Many countries want to sit this confrontation out but Western Europe, Japan, Phillipines cannot afford to be neutral else lose soverignty. Vietnam & Saudi Arabia are not democratic but are not close allies of America. They sit on the fence. Support which ever side is best for them at any particular time. Britain didn't comeout of the EU because of supply chains risk, that is farse. He makes the point America AI development is ahead of Chinese. I can see this being a big Chinese concern. America being a democracy without censorship and with a larger part of the world able to speak english has a big advantage over China. Overall most points that I can agree on. Especially at the end. China needs the big markets to export to. The western ones. Because China is a supply side economy and for the world to consume all Chinese products the rest of the world has to produce less else leads to over supply and that will lead to unemployment or debt.

I'd glad that someone finally noted the quality issues with Chinese manufactured goods. Appliances are a good example. Lots of electronics, problems as soon as the warranty is exceeded. People pay for an extended warranty or "insurance" because they expect problems. Extended warranties are the sellers way of warning a customer that they can expect problems as soon as the warranty is up.

When a speaker speaks, I dont get distracted by his overall presentation. In fact, I placed more attention by his understanding of the subject matter and by the materials he used to convey his message to his audience. He is able to do both as I have already had some basic knowledge on the subject matter and it's a matter of having a deeper understanding after listening to this professor. For someone who hardly need to use his 2nd language, I consider him being very accommodative to accept the Institute's invitation! Thanks Professor, for allowing me to understand China much better.

Cold war has & will bring initiator to its knees. It serve no purpose but serving as assertive methods for supremacy taking the place of hot war ( replacing hot war -- it is also destructive in nature ). Cold war is very much attached to US foreign policy. As cold war amphesized more on phycological wellbeing shaped anxieties, apprehensions, emotional response on the opponent in the form of mental warfare that could translated into actions to neutralise the effects therefore each responses will lead to another level of responses by another until either one worn off. It is utterly wastage. This is the reason the resources of a country goes to waste though without any concrete results. It is an assertions of supremacy. Thats how a lot of money wasted for this & its achive nothing, it is just brandishment of supremacy. In its worst case it could excercebate into much serious situations or hot war ( a cold war with Russia eventually turned to Hot war - no one ever learn ). If US detach themself from cold war, there are so much time & resources they would be able to focus & strengthen USA but they seem to enjoy cold war in assertion of supremacy. Actually, from what you see today, an assertions to no where but self destructions. US just simply focus elsewhere or others but not on their own wellbeing & often in conflict & confrontations. Indeed, todays world's conditions is actually resulted from these faulty cold war. Todate, those days cold war with Soviet, has US achieve anythings ?. Today, Russia is much more powerful whereas US saddled with debts ridden & economic problems at home. Power & strength, shaped partly by NATO while Russia is alone. So, what sort of supremacy are we talking about. So, what Cold war did to US spoke for itselt. Has the cold war strengthen USA ? Just ask this simple question. Has US achieve anythings thus far ?. Is it merely benefiting or in fulfillment the wishes of political minions ?. Infact , The cold war & Economic war initiated by the west with Russia unfortunately revealing the true weaknesses of the West. Considering, if the West had adopted a much modest civilised & practical strategic approaches , the true strength or weakness of the West will still be unknown to others even they're not. This is actually a strength. But for now, it has revealed its true color. In the world relationship, your weaknesses will be translated accordingly. In comparison, taking into consideration of various aspects, in the eyes of Russia, NATO is much weaker then before the break out of Ukraine war. The worst is, the EU itself are saddle with European malaise & this is weaknesses. The biggest challenge & danger to the world now is, hitherto, ' the West manages its weaknesses ( the supposedly strong state living up to its image ). Will the hell break loose ?. For better world Bang

China thinks as a country and as a people. US hegemony is foreign as well as domestic. Since its inception the US has been a class society captured by the elites. The elites have the power to think for only themselves and not for the country or the people. The US never had such a thing as true democracy whereas China actually does, written in its Constitution-Socialism, Power Belongs to the People, Democracy, Minority Rights on its first page. The brilliant book Propaganda by Edward Bernays was published in 1928. Chapter One opening paragraph: The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. Our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of.

Although the substance of the talk has many good points, Yan Xuetong's public speaking has unintendedly created a negative attitude toward China due to unprofessional public speaking. 1)Complaining tone of voice instead of confident speaking. 2) Arrogant manner, body language, the neck-tie when sitting, the manner in drinking water, etc. are unprofessional. 3) Lack of proper preparation between microphone and power points. 4) Insufficient spoken English in grammar and pronunciation i.e. Trump, not Tramp. 5) Lack of organization when it's too long and detailed, making key points unclear. 6) Let the audience know that the word "outer" is equivalent to "foreign" in the Western world. 7) Learn to use a proper word as in academics i.e. the word 'clever' has a negative connotation. Quality is essential if China aims to be accepted and respected in the United States.

A tangential point, I believe the term 'Globalisation/Anti-globalisation' is often used erroneously, especially by classicists, who's perspective is better described as anti-universalism. It bemuses me that much of humanity moved from polytheism, to monotheism, a move towards a single harmonious position, yet now academic revelations have, & are, showing us the true universal answers, classicism is now attempting to move away from the singular, because their traditional explanations do not conform with discovery. The truth is more fundamental to sustainability than belief. Onwards & Forwards.
