London Eye. Turning a Dream into Reality.
Marks Barfield Architects. London Eye - Turning a Dream into Reality. In 1994 with the turning of the Millennium approaching, married couple and architects David Marks and Julia Barfield had an idea on how to celebrate - a giant Ferris wheel on the Thames opposite the Houses of Parliament. It soon became a "Dream" and a huge challenge to turn into a "Reality" - 6 years later.
I heard about it at the beginning when they applied for planning permission and decided to follow on video. There was equal opposition, derision and support. I eventually persuaded the BBC to commission a film which was broadcast shortly before Millennium Eve. The film here was made later as a summary and promotion and it captures the architects' passion and determination to turn their dream into a reality. It is now an icon for London.
Sadly, David passed away in 2017. R.I.P.

London Docklands - Spirit of Renewal.
zhlédnutí 175Před rokem
Made in 1996 for the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) on the regeneration of Docklands. London had been the biggest port in the world. Docks and warehouses on both sides of the Thames from London Bridge to Tilbury. Then, in the mid 1960s, ships became too large for the docks and containers were introduced and signaled the end. The mini warehouses cut the need for docks and within...

Newspaper printing. Westferry Printworks. London Docklands

In 1998 Westferry Printers commissioned this review of their expanding printing business. The key to success was printing competing titles on adjacent presses with the workforce unallied to any. In the mid 1980s when Westferry opened on the Isle of Dogs in London's derelict Docklands it was a welcome development. By the mid 2000s the area had become domesticated and incompatible with this type ...

Hello Alex, I do not know. At the time of filming - 1985 - there was only one press at the Telegraph on Fleet Street which shortly after was shut down when printing opened at Westferry. There is a newspaper printing museum on Fleet Street , next to St Bride's church - you could ask there - but these were big machines so I doubt they will have the space but they might know of one somewhere else. Sorry I can't be of more help. Thanks for your interest.

I’ve never seen such a bunch of unqualified bodge artists at work before. The original Green was on the inside of the door and used on the clock mechanism ironwork. But they couldn’t work that out 🤦🏻 what a terrible restoration. I hope they didn’t charge much 🤨

Hello to all. My name is Michael, and in the 80s and early 90s, I played several gospel shows with Junior when he played with Happy Melody Quartet, also known as the Calvary Mountain Boys from Sylva, N.C. Kenneth was also in the band as well. Junior was a quiet person, but the energy he brought with him was amazing. When he talked, he always had great stories of when he used to make shine. He told me one time that he made shine for more than 30 years and never was caught. He said,"they busted up my still from time to time, but I never was caught." Then he would smile and say, " I supplied all their parties in Atlanta." Junior had a great testimony and said, "that I didn’t drink much myself until I was older. As a result, I had lost all the mobility in my hands and was very depressed. One morning, I woke up and walked down to the creek that runs in front of my house. I had a 22 pistol that I kept in my back pocket. I was going to take my life. But before I did, I got down on my hands and knees in that creek and asked God if he would give me my talent back, I would never make or drink another drop." So to my knowledge he never did and I know for a fact that he played for several years driving all the way from Clayton to Jackson County North Carolina to get on a bus and travel all over to sing and play for Jesus. When I knew him, his hair had turned gray, and he worn glasses, but he still had that same kind smile that you see in this video. I hope I didn't write too much information here, but what a great testimony. His sons(Josh and Wayne) used to play at "The Stompin Ground" with Raymond Fairchild back in the day. They went by "The Crowe Brothers."I know someone who might have some old videos of "The Calvary Mountain Boys," which would have Kenneth and Junior in them. In closing, when someone mentions moonshine or blue grass music, Junior always comes to mind. He also had won several (I think three) banjo picking competition where he was state or national champion.

Hello Alan, Thanks for that. The point at the start was that there was lots of empty space in Docklands for the industry and its many trucks. Then housing sprang up and a big school by the front gate. It became untenable. Now, it is demolished by Richard Desmond - porn Czar - who was granted panning permission for housing. But then with the help of Robert Jenrick MP and Boris J , planned to make the development much larger without permission. It's been empty now for ???? dunno 1- -15 years. The usual mess.

Times change, butt some things should never change. We Britons should still afford some decorum for the habits of deference for the socially superior like this wonderful woman, and knowing our place, which I daresay would make life a lot more tolerable too us cyclists.
