    My friend and I got a pair of 64 GTO convertibles. His blue/white top, 411 rear, mine dark green/black top, 333 rear. I had mine at estimated 135 mph in Nevada, once. Sintered metal brakes, declutching fan, rack and pinion steering, and tiger paw tires, as I recall. About $3,200 each, as we wrangled a deal for a package deal.

    In 68 I fell in love with the Monkey mobile, a 68 GTO convertible(Ironic they had Paul Rev & the Raiders), it was on a Wheaties box too. I always would ask my dad to buy one, he just laughed. Fast forward, 1970 he came home with one, I completely did not remember. 1975, senior yr in hs he bought a 63 GMC pick up and gave me the GTO. Got the prettiest girl in school to ride with me after school too. I went off to work later and let my younger brother use the car when he started JC. He turned left at intersection in front of large truck on yellow/red light. I'm glad my bro is still with us today, unharmed.(successfull and well off too). He's retired and I'm still working. Car not so much. Replaced damaged components but frame still slightly tweecked. Have kept car(in shed) for sentimental reasons. Still have his 63 pick up too. I've suffered 2 divorces, 25yrs child support, and now (at 65yrs old) some health issues, but I'm recovering both financially, and healthwise. I just ask TMH for the privilage to be able to sport and enjoy both these vehicles. Both my parents gone now(dad 20+ yrs ago, mom 10yrs ago). I did not realize till too late how they felt/thought about me cuz they both wanted me to have these vehicles. GOD is good.

    My first car was a 68 GTO, Verdoro grn, Parchment seats, black carpet,console,dash. Came with the XS code Ram Air motor. Bought it in 76, a one owner with 60k on it but it had jumped time. Got it for 450 bucks and spent 100 putting a timing chain and gear on it and man that thing was strong. Even came with mind blower speakers and a nice stereo with 8 trk. A straight car with perfect interior. Engine rated at 360 hp or so but they were so underated back then, I wouldn't be surprised it dyno'd out at over 400hp. It would wrap the speedo at top end.

    I did some research. My dad and later , I had a 71 .According to the brochures and PHS experts the 71 455 H.O. GTO had "more tractable" usable power, and performance than the 70 455. Barely , though ,... the 310 net rating was very underated because insurance companies were really trying to raise premiums beyond reach . The 70 455 was basically a full-size Bonneville motor that had great low end torque but didn't breathe as good at higher rpms. The cam , timing , distributor advance, were altered somewhat on the 71 to offset lower compression . then consider gross vs net hp, 70 had a gross rating of 350 hp . Dyno tests done from that period showed the 71 actually had over 360 net hp when set up with dealer installed ram air , with bigger scoops on the 1971 hood allowing it to breath a little better than the 70 with similar ram air. Using net , dyno corrected hp the 70 had 340 hp...even with higher compression . another GM trick , slightly more agressive rear axle ratios were standard on the 71 H.O. vs 70 Most magazines indicated 1/4 mile in the mid 14s for the 71. 15.0 seconds for the 70 model . just a few tenths apart , but, the 71 GTO 455 HO was still one of the top 10 fastest production cars built in America that particular year . Only a Hemi Cuda/Challenger , Chevelle SS 454, or a Corvette 454 could beat it by a big margin .

    Cool! But it was only revolutionary in late 67 (for 68 GTO model year) by 72 they were using up nos 71 bumpers as a option on LeMans , Sport , and GT...standard on GTO.

Please try and say hello to him from Craig down in Houston and have him tell you about all the absolutely mint GTO's in his collection. I would love for you to interview him and put it on CZcams. Died, and gone to heaven. "Man!" what a show. Bet over 1/2 were vinyl, or rag tops. Only saw 3 64s. (One under cover). Loved the maroon 64 HRDTP with the white interior. Be nice if it were a tri-pwr 4 spd. Had a 1974 Car and driver mag, with a tribute to their 1964 issue, highlighting a maroon 64, that was used for testing by the magazines. Believe it's been told to be a 421.(?) Had the center fold in my military locker. (Still have it today.) :) Wonder how many of those show cars were RAIVs? On my bucket list is a 70, with a 455, 4 speed. Thanks for posting.

    No wonder they only sold 33K GTOs in 64. If they knew how to promote them, (like Ford did the Mustang) they would've cleaned house in Detroit. In this ad, they don't even mention the 348 HP tri-power.

    • @dustylover100
      @dustylover100 Před rokem

      I think GM was not thrilled that Pontiac got around GMs edict on racing and engine sizes in their cars. But they changed their tune when the 64 GTO sold far beyond their wildest expectations. Even though the GTO became a huge seller, they were late to the party when massive, very powerful engines were put into their competition's cars. It wasn't until 1970 that the 455 was put into the GTO.
